Hi!

I've been reading car reviews about the Evo X (non-sst version) and a major complaint from reviewers is the Evo X lack of a sixth gear.

Which brings me to the question: Why is it most Sports car drivers prefer 6 speed cars over 5 speed cars? Is it because 6 speed cars offer better acceleration over 5 speed cars of the same model?

I've been driving 5-speed manual since getting my Class 3 license (Manual Vios at CDC and Dad's Manual Corolla) and find driving a 6 speed car (Civic Type R) a bit confusing at the gear shifting part.

From what I know, the gear usage for 5 Speed cars are:

Gear 1: Moving off from stationary

Gear 2: Very sharp corner (eg: Hairpin curve)

Gear 3: morderately sharp corner

Gear 4 : Straight roads

Gear 5 : Long Straight roads.

How about 6 Speed cars? How are the 6 gears utilized in the circuit?

Thanks Fellas! :p

6-speeds, the extra speed from a 5-speed allows the engine to run at a lower RPM and save fuel, comparatively. This difference is most effective at highway driving speeds.

a car with good torque often doesn't require more gears because you'll lose time through changing, or gain no benefit in other words.

Or a car with comparatively little torque can benefit from an increased ratio range.

Sometimes 6th (or 7th) is used as an overdrive so that the previous gears can be narrower to allow increased acceleration (and thus performance) in the lower gears, but still be able to obtain motorway speeds whilst achieving double digit economy figures.

Beating a Honda is like banging a fat chick. Everyone can do it but who wants to brag about it....

As Kman said, 6th gear allows lower ratios for 1-5.

There is also the problem of driving at high speeds for normal driving, which is the problem with Evo X mentioned in the reviews. The main complaint is that when cruising at 130+ the 5th gear needs over 3000 rpm, which is not good for fuel economy, and also not very pleasant to drive over a long distance. For Singapore roads it is not a big problem, for

Even with my 6 gears, I still need to go above 3k rpm to cruise above 130+++++ Gear ratio plays a good part in the driving, forget about FC if you want to be fast. Fast and fuel saving don't really go well together.

i truely agree.

Well depends on what car you are driving. For Evo X with 2 litre engine it should be able to do 130 at 2500 rpm or less. My father's Lancer EX 2.0 litre is at about 2500 rpm at 130 kmh. Fast speed and fuel economy can go together, it is power that uses fuel. You can have best of both worlds: normal driving cruise at high speed with low rpm, once in a while when playing with the car then use the lower gears.

i can cruise at 90km/h on a honda wave and yet attain at least 45km/l

if my wave got 6 speed, it would be a wonderful small piece of machine

may i know your so called fast speed is ?kmh & how far it goes? for mine, normal driving up till 130kmh, can get around 13km/L. when going @ 160kmh - 180+kmh, i get 10+km/L. not short distance, its from johor - penang - johor.

cheers, bro.

fuel economy on Evo X :? fast speed & fuel economy :? at wat speed do u mean fast speed? & wat do u mean fuel economy? how many km per tank or per litre? u really sure Evo X can cruise 130km/h @ 2500rpm? which gear will that be?

Evo X cannot, which is the problem. Normal Lancer EX can, I checked again today - about 2600 rpm or so at 130 kmh. Evo X with turbo engine should be able to do even better if it had a 6th gear. jB what car are you driving?

I'm just answering TS question about why Evo X would be much better with 6th gear. North American magazines often complain about lack of sixth gear, because they regularly drive long distances at 100-150 kmh, which is bad for FC with 5 gears, which is why Evo X drivers, at least in US and Canada, like to complain on their forums about lack of 6th gear.

I think there was a misunderstanding about what I said earlier. I don't mean you can get good FC when driving fast, I meant that a car that is meant to be fast like Evo X can also be driven for good FC at cruising speeds.

Possible if it has a 6 gear on SST which I have no idea if it even exist.

I remember the Lancer Ex with Fuji/HKS exhaust made the car like a cow go Mooooooo all the way :giddy:

I drive a family car :thumb:

A 6th gear definitely would benefit top end but usually the Japs are equipped with 5. Weird if the SST doesn't have a 6. The Germans however are at their 7th gear already

dont think the Americans can be bother abt tiny Jap cars' fc, really nothing compare to other cars there. over there every1 has atleast 1 car each so a Evo with 22~28mpg is magic compare to their American

btw driving on their highway / interstate norm is onli 104-112kph (65-70mph) which is great for fc. try speeding there & VERY high chance u will be stop by highway patrol :dot:

7 is too much. and look at the Lexus ISF ..it has 8...maybe one day there'll be a 10 speed gear box for cars

6 speed: save fuel when running on high way. Coz lower rpm at higher speed.

5 speed: most racer prefered gear box. Gear to gear have closer ratio, better power in acceleration. More suitable on track and race.

9 speed is already available. It is developed by the gearbox company called ZF. They also made the 8 speed torque converter planetary transmission used in the Audi and BMW higher end luxury cars. 7 speed for the Porsche is also made by ZF. It runs on the synchronizer system but has actuators to do the gear change. If you drive a transmission that helps you to do the clutching and gear shifts by a tap of a lever, you will not complain as much. 10 laps in the same car and driver with 2 different transmissions. The driver will tell you how pleasant it is to drive something that is manual automated rather than full manual.

No. racers prefer as many speeds as possible. And transmissions that allow gear change as easy and fast as possible. Although the clutch pedalled synchronizer transmission is still the transmission that tests driver skills, many racers in current days prefer to have automated manual if possible. 5 speed transmissions have further gear ratios compared to 6 speed. Because 6 speeds have a smoother torque vs gear ratio curve. The more gear the better. But it will mean more headache when shifting. Just like truck drivers. 16 speeds transmissions like the ZF ECOSplit. A nightmare to operate.

For me, having driven an Evo9 Gsr before, I really enjoyed having a 6-speed manual transmission.

And, Kia has released Forte and Koup, both in 1.6m and 2.0m, with 6 speed manual. Cool.
