I just changed my coil and rectifier. still facing the same cackling sound.

So i guess it might be the chain..... hopefully. fingers cross

Can u try lifting your rear wheel off the ground and spin it manually and see if the chain jumps by itself. Or are there any obvious kinks in the chain itself from one link to another?

wa what makes u think coil is the issue in the first place? if its not necessary then u just wasted money on expensive coil and rectifier for no reason..

ur mech didnt know how to check prior to changing them? o_O

Raptor , I searched thumper talk and couldn't find anything really relevant after 1 hour. And maybe to write and explain in forum is too technical. But to simplify the question- is mx 3 merely better than mx2 or is it that only mx 3 can really fit drz400sm? Appreciate your time

Hell, I didn't even know there were different variants of the Keihin FCR 39mm carb for the DRZ. All I can find on either the Keihin or TT websites just mention "FCR-MX 39mm".

because in TT,its not a question of mx 1 2 or 3... mx carb is an upgrade carb when compared to the old one found on the original drz e model which is a slant body. its rather about the bellmouth of the carb that goes to your airbox. if u take a carb even if its a mx3 and it comes from a yzf or ktm and the carb has a cast bellmouth (non removable) that mounts to the specific size of the bike's airbox than u will have a problem because tendency is u gona have some sort of leakage, this will bring about some power loss, more consumption etc because its hard to jet the carb that is leaking air.

what you want from the carb if u are looking at a used one is something with a removable bellmouth that you can swap it out for a drz adapter so it fits perfect on ur bike. not saying that a non removable one is junk, it can still be use but u wont get the maximum out of it unless u know how to mod it to fit properly which is a lot of work. if ure too concern then get the TT kit, its a fcr with the drz bellmouth to the airbox and all other things like the nipple etc which will make things easier if u arent familiar with them.

raptor did a great detail explanation on the carb with the removable bell back in 2010 if u guys dig it out to read..here is the page link

http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php/219212-Archive-DRZ-SM-2005-2010/page118

note the mouth im talking about on the right side with 2 allen screws. u can remove that and get one that fits ur airboot. there are some carbs out there that have a non removable, its casted..hope it helps

before i had the cackling sound, my coil was already burnt. so it's a new coil now.

but i still get that cackling sound now. so im hoping it's the chain.

The coil is mounted onto left hand engine case cover.. the magnetic flywheel that spins around the coil is mounted to the engine crankshaft. There is a 5 cm air space between them. No way can there be any sound created when the engine is running.. or else even when stationary in neutral with the engine running.. you will hear the so called 'cackling' sound.

Is the sound you are describing happening more when you have downshifted and slowing the bike down using engine braking? Is the sound there or lesser when accelerating? If its happening as described in these 2 scenarios.. chances are your drive chain is too slack and whipping against the frame or swingarm.

I have also seen many DRZs that have the chain slider.. the black plastic guide that wraps around the swingarm on the left side badly worn out or even missing.

The purpose of that slider is to prevent metal to metal contact between the slack chain and the swingarm.

I service over 100 DRZs a month at my shop.. and therefore I tend to notice such things.

Understood. The sound is there when it's accelerating.

My chain slider is new. I guess my drive chain is too slack.

Hi Raptor,By the way, where can I get those jack lifts for dirt bike (like those in ur workshop)?

If the sound appears during acceleration.. if it really not coming from the chain then it could be due to a worn or loose front sprocket. Get it checked asap.

Haha.. Reading some of the previous posts.. N its funny y some says a wear off coil will make a sound or cackling sound.. The function of the coil or stator coil is to charge ur batt while on the move.. If it wears off or burnt as wat some might call it, it will just nt charge urr batt.. I just own my drz for about 7mnths.. At least noe the basics.. One of my fren also cmplaint to me his drz got a weird sound.. Den one night wen for a short ride, n i see it was his drive chain loose.. N wat more, its dry!! Want a bike, pls maintain n noe basics 1st

I'm in full agreement with you. The owner's manual will tell you everything you need to know about basic maintenance, and then there's this classic thread here on SBF. Even if you're the sort that doesn't want to bother with technical bits of motorcycle maintenance, all that needs to be done is to bring the bike in for regular (i.e. monthly) servicing at a trusted workshop. Let the professionals worry about your bike maintenance.

I don't think some owners realise how much their neglect compromises their (and others') safety on the roads.

Reading my post again in the context of your query about the noise from your chain, I realise it could have sounded like I was implying you were negligent. Not my intention at all, bro; I was responding directly to fariz's comment about his friend not even being aware that his chain was loose and dry, and thinking about the horror stories Raptor had previously mentioned. :)

My concern is that there are a good number of riders who are terribly ignorant about machine maintenance, and quite comfortable remaining so until something catastrophic happens and they're stranded on the roads or get hurt. If there's any lesson to be learnt by new members to this community of DRZ riders, it's that importance of knowing how your machine works and how to get it properly maintained.
