Buy something you can afford.

The initial purchase, the insurance, the daily running costs, the servicings...all these add up.

Last thing you want is to buy a machine that makes you happy for 1 hour riding time every day, but the 23 hours after that got to scrimp and save to scrape through.

There are some who believe that that 1 hour is enough to offset the other 23 hours. Well, to each his own.

Big sportbikes are expensive. To sum it up in a sentence: There will be times you will spend big chunks of money.

Few-hundred dollars in a go, to be exact.

Let's say you really did manage to get the downpayment and insurance and a 6-month road tax payment settled, this is what you will most likely do:

1. Oil change is around a hundred for approximately 4 bottles...or 3++ litres of oil. Pick-up a bottle and see how many litres a bottle has and do the math. Conduct an oil change every 6 months or so.

2. Chain + Sprocket is 300+ or maybe cheaper (1 year)

3. Tyres...$250 and higher for "sport" rated. If you are eager for more enthusiastic riding (the zhua-throttle and cup-corner type) or you prefer branded tyres with features such as "dual" or "triple-compound", then prepare for $400++ upwards

And the road legality stuff:

1. Road tax: $80 or $160 (6-month/1 year renewal) for a 600cc. It is lesser if you get a 400cc

2. Insurance: A 25 year old chap like me first time riding a 600cc is around $1200 but that was a few years ago and without any past incident. Maybe it's higher now

Petrol.....my circle of biker friends usually bring this topic up. Most of them use their bikes for transport

If you're asking about the R6, this bike has a 17.5 litre tank (inclusive of 3.5 litres "reserve"). So you have 14 litres that can go around 235 to 250km when everything's stock.

In short: approx $30 = 14 litres petrol = 235 to 250km per tank (minus reserve)

As a comparison:

The Fazer 6 can go slightly twice the distance of the on 15.8 litres (minus reserve), and petrol is $32 approx

Honda CB400 travels (from what I hear) 400+ km on 18 litres of fuel (includes 4 litre reserve) $35++ for petrol

So it's a question of either: You don't mind getting a nice bike at the expense of spending more later per month *or* you think maybe you get a bike that will save you money and gets you farther without any financial headache.

Feel free to correct if I get the numbers wrong. tqvm!
