I am a motor cross (trail) hobbyist from indonesia. I heard in spore, after 5 yrs cars and bikes are assumed to be not road worthy there. So they are kept as junks. Where are these junk yards in spore? Pls advise me with junk yards which have lots of good spare parts for motor trail. Or junk yards which keep above 5 yrs old bikes? Thank you.

In s'pore, there's a vehicle control system called the Certificate of Entitlement (COE), and an owner can use his/her vehicle for 10 years. After 10 years, he either renews this entitlement, or scraps/exports his vehicle.

There are a few junkyards namely some in the Jurong/Tuas areas. But whether you are lucky to find those that have parts for trail bikes, I'm not really too sure. There is a Scramblers subforum that you can visit in this website...perhaps the people in there may know a lot.

Cheers!

for the record....

yes there is a habit here of buying cars/bikes brand new and then selling them off after 5 years. BUT...

cars/bikes less than 10 years old are easily bought by second hand buyers. cars sold off at their ten year old mark as LeftCoast explained are then exported to countries like Indonesia because they no longer have a market here. bikes on the other hand continue to enjoy a good secondhand market even after the ten year mark. that therefore means even if such junkyards exist, expect bikes of twenty years old or more, or write-off accident bikes. if u are expecting a junkyard with pristine 5 year old bikes... sorry to disappoint you, doesn exist.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

yes. absolutely possible.

but the admin will be complicated.

when u purchase the secondhand bike from the shop, it would already have its remaining COE value factored into the selling price. and u cant remove it via the shop.

you'd have to buy it like any other local, minus compulsory insurance, which obviously would not apply to you.

then the admin work comes, and you're better off asking the relevant authorities (specifically Land Transport Authority).

is it compulsory to obtain export clearance? coz vehicles sent overseas for sale at other countries must obtain such a permit, but if u purchased it in singapore and thus not selling it indonesia, does it still count as 'export'? and does the bike need to be de-registered before sending it overseas?

these are your crucial questions and like i said, u are better off asking the LTA than here coz i doubt anybody here has done such a thing before. bottomline: yes its possible, but u'd better find out the necessary admin properly.

and after all that... be sure any savings is worth the hassle. singapore is not exactly 'cheap'.
