yes, if you find yourself in deep hole stop digging. but skali the alternative you vote in end up burying you inside leh?

thats why i say, i dont support pap, but the way i think is not the same as you. you are entitled to the way you think, you are entitle to your vote. but just because some other citizens think differently doesn mean we 'never learn' or 'need to wake up'.

i have ALREADY apologized for the tone of my INITIAL posts. I respect your opinion.

even though you might seem to be "fair" & "balanced" in your arguments...BUT i as a friend i do not wish to argue further but i suspect ( you can refuse to believe me, you have every right ) that YOUR REAL ISSUE is...

in that case, don't vote. " but skali alternative...SO I DIG DEEPER SOME MORE...WISE ???

You can disregard my posts. btw, if MBT policies you don't support...Goh Meng Seng you no give chance...so you vote MBT??? Of course you are probably not from Tampines anyway. I think the ideal situation is walkover, no need to vote...better...NO MORE "SKALI"s.

i am humbled. i have finally found the answer to the singaporean votes. "FEAR of SKALIs" is a Singaporean trait.

i have nothing more to say. Go ahead...DIG DEEPER.

As regards to our plight, here's my take.

bukitmerah is resonably enraged by most PAP's policy, but lets put in perspective, what causes, PAP's source of income.

"I think that" we've been suck in every aspects of our lives here, nobody escapes paying what we earn back to the govt. That's no way to have savings, dont even talk about getting rich WORKING in Singapore. WHY?

Things govt take a cut:

1. CPF

2. Income tax

3. GST - income tax already still GST (suspect will increase to 10-13% within this 5 years)

4. Utlities

5. Water (please note that some countries have free water)

6. Groceries (NTUC was setup to take a bite at this market, indirectly setting up a competitive retailer could also imped current markets pricing, you set too high, both make money, people suffer, you set too low, competitor make not enuff, complain, complain, you set market rate, you definitely make like any other biz what, WHERE's the subsidy for the people?)

7. Petrol (SPC, have shell, esso, caltex note enought meh? Why must setup SPC? Again logic as per groceries)

8. Taxis (hardly see any yellow top nowadays, all con into selling to Comfort and Delgro lor, logic as per groceries)

9. MRT (having control petrol, why fare so expensive compared to other cities like Hong Kong, Korea?)

10. Education (ULSA or some Australia University actually wanted to come in, but why the deal fell through? End up we have NTU, NUS, SIM, SMU, all Sg version??? So logic as per groceries)

11. HDB (new flats thats no reason to pegged to market trend, as long as mark up abit from construction costs and overheads to eligible Singaporean citizens buyers, what so difficult with that, the land is state owned, there's no development charge. For resale flats, let it float, i dont care, this is for Singapore citizens if they really can sell and make profit, good what, but they must not complain if they backside itchy want to buy back as resale and complain expensive, these people i heck care their nonsense)

12. COE, ERP these are consider luxury tax, for the common folk, there's no basis to complain about. Of course it doesnt work, but you still wana pay, then complain also no use.

And the paradox is with all these hardships upon us, they think 4 million Singaporeans not enough, need to influx more. But what are they importing? Look at the majority of the quality? Cross the road also dont know, speak English also dont know, draw picture in MRT for handicapped seats also dont know, the "Dont know what to say" kind you know anot? What happen to MM Lee's speech about quality genes for quality workforce? This type of quality???

Cut long story short, every body were told they paid for a Ferrari but got a Toyota instead.

As regards to our plight, here's my take.

bukitmerah is resonably enraged by most PAP's policy, but lets put in perspective...

No, i am not "enraged". I am from an old estate with many senior citizens that are die-hard PAP supporters. I am not from Tampines / Hougang / Aljunied. Even then, my GRC with 2 ministers...PAP won in my area too with lesser than MBT's 57.2%.

If you tell me that you sincerely support PAP & think PAP or Mah Bow Tan is the "best" choice...it becomes a argument over logic & facts & opinions, intellectual ideas & political stance. Just like my grandma. i respect her "opinion".

But when you tell me "BUT SKALI ALTERNATIVE...". it is no longer an intellectual argument. It is the entrenched PSYCHE. it is the "FEAR". Then all argument is pointless.

MBT NO GOOD BUT IS NSP good ENOUGH ??? Better don't take chance stick to MBT...

I often get rip off / kanna carrot by local bike mechanics. When i know about it...i look for another mechanic / workshop. i don't stick to the same con-man for fear of "skali another shop rip me off". SIMPLE. If new shop rip me off more, i look for another alternative. Unless i got no more choice, i consider going to the 1st con-guy LAST CHOICE...ONLY BOH PIAN THEN GO.

NOT FOREVER NO CHANGE CAUSE SKALI...SO I DON'T MIND TO BE CONTINUED TO BE RIPPED OFF. THE 'RIP-OFF" CONMAN GOT DEGREE YOU KNOW...

U be responsible for your own vote.. and u better dun make any noise next time pap screw u up.. cos you bloody hell deserve it more than anyone and u drag all others down. esp ppl in potong pasir.. now my close friend swore he never ever will step into potong pasir in case he bum into those ingrates...

speed and be home 5 mins early or 7 days late.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THE EXAMPLE OF GOOD QUALITY OPPOSITION MPs like Low Thia Khiang etc.

we will not have known that if he was "good enough" if Hougang "but skali" in 1991.

we will not know if Chiam See Tong was "good enough" if Potong Pasir "but skali" in 1984. ( coincidentally they chose Chiam over Mah Bow Tan in 1984 )

Hougang also do not know for sure if Yaw Shin Leong is "good enough" in 2011. If Yaw no good, there is always another election, Hougang believed.

I suspect all opposition MPs voted in will work twice as hard to prove their worth if given a chance...unlike some PAP MPs sleeping during Parliament sessions you see on TV ( are they good enough ? so MBT is good enough? ). Cause they know if they are not good "enough" they get kicked out.

"but skali alternative..." is very comfortable to hide your fears...

search your conscience & you know the answer...you give "pretty" arguments just to avoid facing your fears, Singaporeans.

Stop blaming PAP. Stop blaming Mah Bow Tan. Stop blaming NSP or Opposition Parties being "not good enough".

i have news for you. "They" ( Opposition ) will never be good enough for you. If your GF / wife that cheats on you repeatedly but still you always stick to her. You will never get another girl that is "good enough" for you.

Ok, i apologise if my language was offensive. However, i think i will like to make my ideas clearer below...

1) if you believed opposition quality is "low", let me assure you ALL PAP candidates are ALWAYS extremely "well-qualified". But still we have so many problems today. many of these problems are NOT DUE TO THEIR LACK OF INTELLIGENCE / "QUALITY" LET ME ASSURE YOU. So by having more "quality" PAP candidates, will we be able to solve the problems? No, it is a lack of "resolution" & "CONFLICTS OF INTERESTS TO THE TOP".

there were many "good-hearted" & capable PAP candidates before. BUT they were never promoted to showcase their abilities. The group that were promoted ( most of them ) are due to their "talent" to "further the interests of the incumbents in power especially those at the top".

the situation has become so bad that it has turned to a FARCE... "the SMARTER & MORE HARD-WORKING they are, the MORE THE PEOPLE HAVE TO PAY & SUFFER."

Let me exacerate ( spelling? ) a little to make it clearer...

imagine we have a relatively "POOR" opp MP that does nothing but just oppose all UNNECESSARY INCREASE IN BURDEN TO THE PEOPLE, ALL UNNECESSARY INCREASE IN LIVING COSTS ( remember PAP always tell us ALL THESE INCREASES ARE NECESSARY, INCLUDING THEIR PAY & PAY ).

imagine we have a "DUMB" oppo MP that refuses to allow a further increase intake of even MORE FT for the next 5 years etc...

i am already talking about a WORST CASE SCENARIO or even worst...

the guy does nothing except JUST TO MAKE PAP BE ON THEIR TOES & STOP "BULLYING" SINGAPOREANS...

Besides, some of the oppo candidates are better than that, many have concrete proposals to help the people. are you aware of their ideas? are their ideas really that "bad" ???

2) i am not from NSP nor affilated to any oppo party BUT NSP's Goh Meng Seng sold his own HDB Flat to raise money for his political cause. Whatever his ambitions you suspect, at least HE WAS WILLING TO RISKS HIS OWN MONEY.

He & his team lost to a certain Minister that tell us housing costs in singapore are " affordable" & belongs to a party whose leaders CONSTANTLY TELL US WE HAVE TO PAY THEM MILLIONS IN ORDER TO GET THEM TO WORK FOR US !

Character? Sincerity? Willingness to serve? So MBT was better?

QUALITY? So MBT's "track record" of what he did to us singaporeans was "GOOD"??? So MBT was smarter & had better quality??? So MBT has done a great JOB these past 23 years? Tampines voters support his policies & 'TALENT" ( WHICH KIND ? MONEY MAKING FOR HIS BOSSES ??? )

3) as for pyro13's remarks...he was stereotyping ALL warehouse assistants. I apologise if my previous language cause offence. I wait to see if pyro13 will take back his words. there is no need for me to rebut him...his "prejudice" has already spoken about his judgement. If his teachers in school were "bad"...ALL teachers MUST BE BAD.

4) TODAY vs FUTURE ??? the future is created TODAY ( May 7 2011 ). So if there is a lack of oppo candidates get voted in...you believe 'they" will automatically be "experienced" in the future ???

5) i heard a saying from somewhere..."if you find yourself in a deep hole...stop digging" . my english may not be correct but i think you know what i mean. If voting PAP for the past 23 years have not improved but EVEN WORSEN our OWN SITUATION, we should continue to vote for them ??? If someone that constantly rip u off for 23 years & never return the huge sums of money you lent them, will you still gave them chances & continue to lend them even more money??? If u say yes, i will LOVE TO BORROW MONEY from you.

No offence taken. But i shall not take back my words. A politician is someone representing us in parliament.

Dun flame me, but i feel language is very important. This guy cant even speak properly. How will he get his point across? A smart guy will jus shoot him back and shut him up. In short, im nt saying a warehouse assistant is all bad, but i sincerely feel we need someone who is used to make good decisions in parliament.

If they wanted to field a malay guy, they should have got a better convincing at first glance type of person. Not a guy who automically gets stereotyped by pple like me.

If the Working attitude is excellent, i emphasise if, wat will u think of him? Wat wil u say and look upon singapores parliament wen u see a MP carrying goods Or driving a forklift? Inspirational? Examplary.

Mbt said housing is affordable bcos he comes from a well to do family, so does most of the pap candidates. They do not understand our troubles.

I was hoping for the same thing.

Are you not like stereotyping? I worked as a warehouse assistant before. We are calculative of course. Because we do the hard work and we get paid peanuts while the supervisor just walk around ordering us what to do and never break a sweat. Put yourself in their shoes. Will you not be that way too?

As for the attitude of your warehouse assistant workers you cannot really blame them. Blame your company for hiring them. Blame the HR interviewer for letting them get the job so easily.

We don't hear people dying of hunger and thirst is because there are kind people out there who volunteered to provide some food for the poor and desolate.

Singaporean women have too high a pride to work as maids.

Didn't some minister said that Singaporeans are complacent and lazy?

Thank god no offence taken, honestly, its not only my warehouse or my company. And my company spreads across 6terminals of cargo.

I deal wit warehouse or cargo agents everyday. They always say d same thing to me "my warehouse asst went awol again". And its a new guy everytime. Thus my clouded view on them. But i am nt a person tt wil listen and believe stories of great werking stAff until i see it and i honestly have not and sadly i doubt so as i intend to change my career path very soon.

i'll spell it out for you: i would have voted for low thia kiang's team or chiam see tong's team, or the other wp teams including the new ones, had they contested my ward. but it wasn my ward they contested, and i do not have enough confidence in the other oppo teams.

my point is i will not vote for any mother's son oppo just becasue they are oppo.

and just from here you throw the idea that i might as well have walkover because i 'scared of alternatives'?

i'm not surprised, a lot of people here (and elsewhere) seem to have the attitude that i either give 100% support to any and all opposition, or i shut up and declare myself 'PAP supporter'.

ridiculous. like i must totally support Liverpool or Chelsea and at the same time cannot say anything good about ferguson or Man U. cannot be the kind of soccer fan rooting for the better team and change support as the season progress, must die-die choose one team to support all the way. and if my team screw up i cannot criticize.

i am not a PAP supporter, i dont agree with everything they do, but neither do i disagree with everything.

Mr Low Thia Kiang says it best below:

Low said, "So far including an apology from the Prime Minister, I think they have done all the right things, but Singaporeans know they need a credible opposition."

He said, "This election shows that this is the kind opposition that Singaporeans want: rational and responsible. We do not oppose for the sake of opposition, we will only confront when necessary."

 Mr Low Thia Kiang, long live you and your party.

and opposition means automatically better life than PAP? if its a guarantee then why does Chen Show Mao say:

First-time Member of Parliament-elect Chen Show Mao, considered the "star catch" of the WP, said, "This is a great responsibility, just looking at the number of people who have given me this trust without the benefit of a track record, we don't want to give them cause to regret their decision."

 long live Workers' Party. you don't get my vote just because you are opposition, you earn it from what you say and what you do. I would have voted for WP if i were in Hougang or Aljunied. i would have voted for chiam see tong too.

but the other oppos, i either dont have enough faith, or dont agree with everything they say.

I dont agree to SDP manifesto of reducing NS to 1 year. and i'm a male who has served my 2 and a half years, and continue to serve my reservist today. i dont want to discuss this issue here, this is only an example, start another thread for it.

i think there is indeed an FT problem, but i dont think the oppos like Nicole Seah are giving me the solutions i want to hear. the main bulk of these FTs are working in industries that singaporeans dont want to do, like construction and service sector. reduce their numbers? eject them all like someone suggested? then who work in construction? who become waiter in restaurant? how can we accuse them of stealing our jobs if they do the jobs singaporeans dont want? already local restaurant owners complain they are understaffed with waiters because locals dont want to work and new regulations prevent them from hiring foreigners.

yes they overcrowd mrt, but the solution is to improve transport system, not eject them all. of coz i'm unhappy when ministers insist no overcrowding problem, but apparently i'm not allowed to criticize these ministers because if i dont support nicole seah then i must automatically be a supporter of these ministers. o_O

the white collar FT's, thats where i want to target. these are the ones stealing jobs that would otherwise be done by locals. i want an opposition that targets only these FT's, and i want to hear their ideas, not just say its a problem.

but... since i dont suport all the oppo members, then i have to shut up and ask for walkovers in future.

My colleague voted PAP in in Tampines. I feel very sad for him. He alway complain of the high cost of living.. money no enuf.. blah, blah, blah. He is not bold enfu to step out of the box. It's like a caged bird, so used to be fed & even wen the cage door is opened, he prefer to stay inside. Sad. After dis GE, I really hope that PAP will start thinking for his ppl. Our situtation now is getting worse. For example, some of our taxi drivers are over qualified, http://www.transitioning.org/2009/08/18/phd-holder-now-a-taxi-driver-st-19-aug/. Sad. It's not that s'porean are choosy wen finding a job. It's that the employer is not willing to offer a better wage for his fellow man. They will compare paying to a foreign talent wif a local bred talent.

How to survive in s'pore?? Pls PAP, dun take away our food & feed other... This is our country, ONLY country. Dun ruin us. Wake up & do something kind to your ppl.

i am not flaming you ( it is just my style of talking ) but just to remind you of a few things...

1) you want good "speakers" from the Opposition? Whatever happened to JBJ, FRANCIS SEOW, TANG LIANG HONG? they were good speakers & debaters but look at what they got in return...

2) would you rather have a "NO VOICE" & additional "YES-MEN" to the ruling party then?

3) In the GRC system, you vote for a team not just a single individual. Besides i was talking about MBT's Tampines not the "warehouse guy" who can't "talk properly". Was he even worse than TPL ?

4) Don't think the GRC system is fair? Well as long as PAP keeps winning them, nothing wil change. Besides At least Marine Parade & Tampines remain as GRCs.

YOU HAVE NO CHOICE AS LONG AS YOU KEEP VOTING THEM IN GRC.

WHAT ABOUT EUNOS GRC, CHENG SAN GRC, JALAN BESAR GRC? have you heard of these GRCs ?

As long as PAP wins, you can kpkb until the pigs fly also no use.

i don't think the system is fair either but it was PAP that created it NOT the Opposition. You also think not fair, right? Try changing the system by constantly "complaining" like typical singaporeans which is how PAP describe & view us.

Go on & complain...

5) anyway, it is all useless talk now. PAP will take in more new citizens to swing the votes in their favour. 5 years later, you vote Opposition also NO USE. LL.

i think maybe my harsh tone frighten people but if you think calmly through my words...

look, i also don't like it either but DO WE HAVE A CHOICE?

Do you know why very few Singaporeans want to work in the construction or service industry? fyi, I WORK IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY FOR 15 YEARS.

Let me tell you many of the foreign workers ( eg. China, India, Bangladesh ) tell me tell they also don't want to wrk in these industries in Singapore after their contract expires. They rather work in the same trade elsewhere. The Thai workers of the 1990s have left. The China workers are complaining now & many return to China after a short stint here. Many Bangladeshi rather go Middle East after their Singapore stint. I know cause i work with them everyday for years. Some of them are even my friends & they tell me their feelings.

i can explain the real UPSETTING details to you in private, if you are really interested. Yet many 1st world countries can find their local staff to work in such industries...guess why?

As for the "white collar" jobs in which are the one you want to target, maybe it "affects" you directly...let me say it is because of the market for "blue" collar jobs.

Over the years, in many 1st world countries, the conditions for "blue" collar jobs are good.

in Singapore, the bad conditions for such work "spill" over to white-collar jobs. Last time, the office types mind their own business, no speak up for the poor "blue" jobs...now it is their asses that got burned.

See how TODAY was created by apathy in the PAST. How further sitting on the fence TODAY will affect the FUTURE?

Never mind, i am just a LKK. I am sorry if your feelings are hurt. I was just too LKK to expect you to understand...

remember, i don't think it is fair either but that is the way it is ...if you have a better alternative please stand for election...i will like to hear your ideas on how to change the present system

Wake up & do something kind to your ppl.

i have said it before & i will say it again.

Stop blaming PAP. WE HAVE GIVEN THEM THEIR MANDATE & POWER.

WE ARE RESPONSIBLE.

last time, many people kpkb that they got no chance to vote. i myself is a 1st time voter.

last time got excuse...now only people from Tanjong Pagar GRC got excuse.

in 2011, nearly all of us got no excuse.

When was the last time there was an election in Tanjong Pagar?

Yet TAMPINES HAD 5 CHANCES ! 1988, 1991, 2001, 2006, 2011. Tampines voters who voted for MBT have NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN.

There must have put something in the air / water in Tampines...

Thanks & Best Regards.

a few points to ponder for this GE:

regarding the ruling party

1. something is terribly wrong with PAP's selection system to let so many outstanding individuals fall over to the oppositions, while they are getting TPL?...

2. LKY is as shrewd as ever. but it seems that no one in the party listen to him. so much so he had to use scare tactics to scare the voters of Aljunied. apparently, it was just too late.

3. there is a growing religion aura among some of the candidates which does not bode too well for Sinagpore's future. Yes, perhaps gay issue is a problem, but has anyone forgotten about AWARE, the over zealous episode?

The oppositions

1. the oppositions are so varied in their policies. if NSP were elected as well, we might see that WP and NSP will be at each other throats. Where is the charismatic opposition leader of Singapore who are able to unite all under one vision. it seems so far away from even Malaysian politics

2. chiam see tong and low thia khiang cannot be more than a world apart. One is able to engage more potential candidates while the other, well... The results are not exactly surprising.

End of the day, end of this GE, I would like to refocus this thread on issues of concern to Singaporeans. I stand corrected on my opening post about MR Chiam retiring. Apparently he may be contesting next GE, according to Yahoo news, health permitting. I wish him all the best.

Also, my tribute to George Yeo for his service to Singapore. More importantly, his gentlemanly departure based on today's press conference (also yahoo news).

Say all you want about GRC and local politics, I think what he said today was sincere and he deserves my respect.

P-plate should be an attitude to safety and riding. There's always more to learn.

Do you know why very few Singaporeans want to work in the construction or service industry? fyi, I WORK IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY FOR 15 YEARS.

...

i can explain the real UPSETTING details to you in private, if you are really interested. Yet many 1st world countries can find their local staff to work in such industries...guess why?

This is 1 area where we often only hear the story by PAP, we need FT becuase Singaporean not willing to take jobs some jobs like construction or service sectors etc.

Why many FT are given jobs like Admin, Book-keeping, customer services, doctors etc white collars jobs? Is it because these jobs not few Singaporean wanna do?

If the answer is no true, then is it more than the eye tha Singaporean siam jobs like construction or services sectors etc.

Likewsie, why are our taxes given to Foreigner to study NUS NTU in scholarship? Because these courses Singaporean avoid?
