Hi bros,

Can help me understand - When a 2nd hand bike shop tells me that they did an "engine overhaul" on the bike, what does it mean really?

How do we know whether it's really overhauled? i bought mine from ASP serangoon about 14 days ago... and they told me just overhaul and i had to run in for 3000km.

Don't believe. A few years back i bought my bike, they say that will replace the brake fluid. 1.5 years later, i decided to replace, the brake fluid reservoir so damn rusty and got barely any brake fluid left. Don't tell me 1.5 years the brake fluid can go down by so much and become so rusty...

1st hand must check also, ever heard of first hand bike catching on fire? Because it was one of those few defective ones that got through? Anyway safest policy is not to believe, I bought my first bike, they say new piston, I go top servicing at another shop, piston is an old one, with burn marks etc. Anyway, take your time knowing which shop will try to karot you many2 and which won't or at least won't try to go overboard with karotting you.

Nowadays, buy old or new also be prepared to fix things...

around 1 ~ 2 weeks ago, i saw a FBF plate shiny NEW spark in a workshop. mechanic told the guy overhaul, show the "jia lat" block & piston to the guy. i dunno if the mechanic is honest or not but the owner said bike broke down after just 10000km, oil got change he claimed...

dunno what went wrong...bike defective problem...or mechanic lying...or owner really blur dunno how to take care...i just know nowadays cannot take anything for granted. even brand new doesn't mean you can anyhow bo chap

some more nowadays, bike shops / workshops everywhere in singapore all like to carrot people...DON'T TRUST THEM...all same one.

which year .. number plate?

can find out how much they did the bike by comparing with one sold here. More expensive maybe did more stuff. They should anyway but most of the time they gamble that yr bike would be fine and it will run until the 'warranty' is over then some problems will start. (how they know which parts previous owner has changed.. changed recently.. needs changing.. due for change.. answer: only the previous owner will know. so they will only do basic.. ie wash carburetor , tune yr carbs , check wiring , brake fluid , change EO , oil filter , air filter . This is the norm and it already "cost a bomb" about 200 plus 300 for 2B bikes and 300 to 400 for 2A)

Do this to see for yourself whether they did up your bike before handing you the keys..

-Get someone in the know, an owner of the bike same model as you who has rode for a few years with the bike test-ride your bike when you take it out from the bike shop. (Engine should be smooth as silk - ENGINE NO PROBLEMS , GOOD TUNING , CARBURETOR WASHED , NEW AIR FILTER)

-If its not , ask them to take out the carburetor and wash it on the spot . If they open up the carb and it is full of rust and water , then you know they did not do up the bike and you better kick up a fuss or they will leave you with it.

hmmm. spark. bought it for 3.7k...

Can move, can clear meter...hahah, eh those are old 2 strokes ah.

Put it to neutral gear and give it a good rev.. Rmb the sound it makes and the smoothness of the engine as you turn the throttle.. Vroom Vroom, Vrooooooommmmm.. It should be smooth all the way from low rpms to the high rpms and maintain w/o much vibration , loss of power or experience roughness.

Hope it helps..

On another note since the topic is on engine overhaul , anyone can help me ?

Thinking of doing the engine overhaul myself , bike still ok - milege 97,000km . Time to do it to check for wear and tear . Have the owner's manual and it shows quite clear how to do it but might take a few days to slowly figure , wash and check the parts , get replacements . ( I'm good at DIY !! )

Anyone did this before? Also known as top-overhaul?

I understand that the mechanic will dismantle everything and inspect the engine for wear and tear and replace parts that need replacement. Replace the gaskets and sealants and put everything back together, check for the piston offset that should be within allowance given by the owner's manual and put back the carburetors . Check them to be in tune . Fix back the tank and seats and ready to go.

Is that so?

- do they need to hang the engine? Or do they keep it on the bike only removing the top of the engine.

- is there any cleaning to be done on the insides of the engine? removing of water or fluids , carbon in the interior.

- anything I might have missed?

Thanks a lot.

So far haven't done it before so no experience. Asking around first.

Oh okay. hmmm. well yea it does sound okay. but sometimes and speeds of 90-100 i feel vibrations in my handlebar. is that normal for my spark cause of itz size?

Posted

I have not rode a spark before so I can't tell you exactly, but for size wise the bike should only experience a bit of swaying in high wind at the AYE-ECP flyover and not so much of vibrations . Slight genuine vibrations will come when you are pushing it pass its cruising speed .

Do check however at the carburetor and air filter in due time. As a water and rust filled dirty carburetor and dusty-grimed air filter will have a higher petrol consumption for the same distance traveled at the same speed. These two components can also cause the bike to feel rougher, draggy and have vibrations at cruising speeds. And remember the engine oil as well, you will know in due time how to take care of your baby.
