if your family keeps discouraging you from riding your bike?

kinda caught in such a situation now. been riding 7+ years already, mostly class 2 bikes. lost a few friends to accidents and had 1-2 spills myself (but not life threatening).

was wondering if you would sell your bike for a used car because of safety and various other logistical reasons (eg. fetching relative with wheelchair).

i'm looking to get a used car but the price is really ex, wouldn't be renewing COE this year since it's like 50k+ for CAT A.. any advice?

you are responsible for your own well being.

yes accidents may happen but you are still in control of the situation most of the time.

ride safe and defensive, that keeps you alive.

understand that you must not be oblivious of other road users

i have seen so many bikers who ride like blurr fu@cks, sooner of later they will either hit something or get hit

now for reality.

if you cant afford a car, and yet buy one, you will get into a financial accident quicker than you think.

buying a car is easy, maintaining and usage is the real cost.

if you buy a car and have to think hard before you can use it, thats totally lame.

average holding/usage cost for a standard jap is $15k per yr.

if you earn less then $5k a month, dont even think about it.

unless you hv no commitments and want to throw money

end of the day, it's your money, it's your life

just sharing my honest opinion

good luck.

Spend S$3k do up a sidecar on your bike lor,

Upside:

wont spill anymore, maybe skids...

cheaper than car maintenance,

road tax still the same,

insurance slightly higher because of attachment,

hdb parking most 2 lots, $30, still cheaper than car lot,

Downsdie,

no more riding on expressways,

will end up smelling more fumes stuck in traffic, unless you wear carbon filter masks or some protection.

entering ERP carparks, maybe have to pay car park charges, cannot squeeze bike lane anymore..

Register a sole proprietor company, buy a commercial van, cheap road tax, cheap diesel, cheap maintenance. Annual fee for co $20 renewal for ACRA. But commercial vehicle no PARF value on scrap, only balance COE and scrap value $150 only.

But most used commercial vehicle below $20k can get, but dunno why now all selling below $30k??? Very crappy car dealers.

If can tahan until 2020, when our MRT web is complete, you dont really need a car to travel in Sg anymore, by then i think most property prices because of proximity to node stations will drop, cause Sg transport will be like a spider web, making location exclusivity lesser of a premium. Even i buying a car, will expect it to tahan most 9 years before i consider scrapping and use the money for something else.

hahaha thanks for the comments guys.. actually i'm earning 4.5+ monthly not including the meal, transport and misc allowances. a sidecar is interesting but it doesn't allow any space for wheelchair. sort of given in to my family's constant daily nagging and the convenience of owning 4 wheels. i am quite ok with my bike riding though, only skidded once on public road because it was wet and a few times inside a circuit. i think that's quite ok for 7 years haha but as usual, family will worry.

anyway, i'm definitely settling for a used car so just doing some poking around at sgcarmart now..

Dont lean too much to sgcarmart, the prices there are higher. ALso scan through st701 classifieds, and oneshift websites, these sometimes also have gems amg the bandits.

I came upon one advertiser who sell very few used cars! It happens this is a Hyundai authorised agent who sells new Hyundai cars and only sells used cars traded-in by buyers, find that these type less crappy cars push to you.

If you are young free and single now, you should try to build wealth not destroy it.

You will need it when you get married and hv a family of your own and higher commitments.

$4.5k is a fair salary for a 20 something yr old.

Just enough to set aside a small decent sum every month.

Perhaps you shouldnt blow that on feeding a car.

Anyway all the best
