Greetings to all,

I've come across a situation which I'm unsure of how to deal with this. On 15th July, I went to Malaysia and pumped petrol at Petronas (Jalan Yahya Awal). I used my POSB Debit card to pay for the amt of RM9.80. (Just insert the card at the pump, fill up, collect the receipt and go).

However while checking my online banking, I discovered that RM200 was deducted instead of RM9.80.

I've called DBS/POSB to check with this. They recommend me to call Petronas. But, however I could not find the correct number to call. (I cannot call the 1300 hotline as I'm in Singapore.)

Any numbers I should call? Or any suggestion on what should I do? I appreciate some help, not comments.

I think it normal. I also got into this situation using Maybank credit card. Somehow I also saw a RM200 being charged to my account. So I called up the Maybank and they say it is normal when paying for petrol in Malaysia. But when the actual bill come, it will only reflect the actual amount. So far so good. But it just eating into my credit limit. Don't know if it is the same case for you.

Wow, u made my heartbeat beat normally again. Is that so for Maybank. Hmm, I really got to check with DBS. Hopefully it is the same case. They charge RM200 exactly right?

The RM200 that they charge is not finalised. So I got this ledger balance thingy. So its a transaction in progress.

Ya, it RM200. but the thing is, they just minus off from my credit limit. Since yours is a debit card, I don't know how it works. If I'm not wrong, Maybank told me it some sort of guarantee for the petrol company.

Hmm okay, I've just called DBS. This is what they say:

"The amount Rm200 is charged by the merchant(Petronas). DBS is just holding the money until Petronas comes and claim it from them.If by 10 working days they did not claim them money, DBS will put it back to my available balance."

So there's two way, either Petronas comes to DBS and claim the actual RM9.80 or Petronas comes to DBS and claim RM200. Haha, damn it. I'm gonna get cranky for the next few days.

it's the same in SG.. even with speedpass.

a specific amount, from what i know with speedpass, S$150 will be earmarked by the bank for collection by the merchant, in this case exxonmobil.

within 10 days, the merchant will a do clearing with the bank for $$$. whatever balance of the S$150 will be released back into your account.

the same goes for either debit or credit card.

Bro, thats normal. Its just a bank preventive measure. To double check on your card credibility. Its not a charge.

Such a round figure charge is likely to be a 'holding amount' that will drop off from your account in 14 days should the merchant not claim for it.

Check your account online again in a few days to see the merchant has posted the transaction in. There should be another charge of the RM9.80.

No point going back to the merchant (kiosk) as they are powerless to reverse the transaction after 24 hrs, and I don't believe the kiosk people know how to contact their merchant bank to reverse the transaction.

If the amount does not fall off from your card account after 14 days, simply submit a dispute letter to DBS. It will be up to the bank to take the case up with the merchant.

***Tip for you: Get the DBS CSO to monitor your card account and to call you back after 14 days. Remember to take down his/her name.***

The only reason why I'm not laughing with you is that I prefer laughing at you.

Did you swipe your card at the pump itself? As far as I know this only happens when you swipe your card at the pump island.

This is perfectly normal as you are paying BEFORE you pump. The system does not read minds to know how much you will pump.

Not only will it block off x amount of money on your card, but you also need to have that amount in your card.

That's to say you need to have at least RM200 (in your case) in your account to even start filling even though you may only fill up RM10. Its a pain because the system takes a few days to right itself. You might find suddenly all your money is locked up if you fill up multiple times especially since you're using a debit card.

To prevent that just get the petrol station to unlock the pump and pay inside at the counter.

Yes, I swipe my card at the pump itself, fill up and collect the receipt at the pump itself.

But if I were to pay at the counter, will they still be able to accept Mastercard? Or I have to stick to cash?

there are some koisks in jb (or rather some parts of boleh land) that dun accept cards that dun have the chip embedded. i kenna before...so change the old ones to the new type with the chips.

That said, all kiosks accept mastercards, if u can swipe it at pump, they will accept it at counter, unless counter machine spoilt then ho ho ho... :p
