hi guys, any1 rode the maxsym now but came from cl2 jap scoot? Wanna know the diff in power, handling, n reliability. I know cl2 jap sure better but by how much in those aspect? Cos the sym call fir 12k+ whereas the jappy ask for 20k...

Rode japanese bikes all my life, now trying kymco. All i can say is you pay what you get. With the great saving from buying taiwan scoot, you sacrifice away bike performance.

On the other hand, most Taiwanese bike/scooter are more simple and cheaper to maintain compared to Japs and Italian similar.

For the $12k+ you are getting 90% of the performance of the same class jap bike which costs $18K+ and save $ on daily maintenance, too good to be true right? Here come the differences : plastic different quality, may see colour fade after 5 years. Build quality also different, for jap bike you may need change major parts after 7 years in contrast taiwan bike may be 5 years. but over all still a good bargain.

Fully agreed, the plastic of Taiwanese scooter really sucks, press harder also can crack, black portion turn gray under hot sun for just days, screws are another setback, too tight breaks, too lose drops, although most parts are reasonably cheap, some are extremely expensive.

But to be fair to them, the quality and technology has improved a lot over years, so for limited budget, it is still worth consider compared to Japs scooter, eg. Honda PCX, which is extremely overpriced and very expensive to maintain. You pay for what you 'want'/'like'.

As to compare frm my experience with sw and now maxsym...all i knw is that sw engine is smooth due to the fact its parallel twin but power wise its more or less the same:-)

Workmanship they are both the same using abs plastic and the ctr portion if not properly taken care of will be grey (both sw n maxsym)

The main thing is to look after the bike :-)

Hmm. Plastic turns Gray fast? Most Italy scoots also this prob. But plastic press harder break, screws hard soft prob, sounds scary...

Yeah i agree with you u buy the cheapest scoot or the most expensive scoot, it will still have this problem..

For me what i do is thst i buy this plastic trim protector by Sonax at Giant its quite a good product, u can apply it once a week and u can see the diff:-)

At the end of the day it all depend on individual who look after it..i ever seen a fbe honda silverwing that is so poorly maintain that it look as though the bike like kena mud bath..the plastic all grey n the white is i dont konw yellow or grey...lol

So be it cheapest china scoot or expensive italian scoot, if u never look after it cosmetically, it will still turns up like crap after a year or so...lol

In fact plastic turns gray not a big problem, apply protection lotion weekly or after washing should be quite sufficient to slow down the deterioration process.

The quality of the plastic used is rather low quality, most 'catches' breaks with a little of force to open or close back, screw holes loss if screw too hard (on plastic), so have to be very gentle.

The engine (hot area) screws are the biggest problem, heat expands and cold contracts, many already experience screws lost (dropped off) and few broken when trying to take the screw out, so only way is to replace aging or not so good condition screws with better one, stainless steel type maybe.

In term of comparing with Japs, the above are areas need to be addressed or watch out, but the price is good and for normal usage, Taiwanese bike still consider good with the much improved engine technology compared to say...10 years back.

Totally agree with you:-)

Taiwan engine is catching up with japs..take for example gts200, u never hear anything bout engine problem or leaking here and there...

I dont know if you guys aware that taiwan bikes uses Keihin ECU and Bando Belting and both are Madi in Japan

The other thing is that taiwan made tyres i.e Maxxis is as good as diablo and metzeler especially during wet wether :-)

errr..can someone enlighten me.....why are we talking specifically about plastics here? Thought its $$$ VS bike performance such as engine, suspension, brake system across all available different brands comparison.

Italian plastics, taiwan plastic, germany plastics, japanes plastics got difference ah? They also play a part in the bike performance?

More plastics used = higher bike price?

I think the topic on discussion for the last few posts are on build quality, and not limited to plastics used. Take for example the mentioning of screws.

There are different classes of screws and plastics. The way its manufactured, material used and all. Each engineering team has a budget to play around with, so you can't expect a team with $100 budget (for example here) to go research and come out with something that will cost $500.

What goes into the bike price isn't only the engine, brakes, suspension, etc. Gotta also consider the contruction and quality used in the process. The plastic body surround is a major part of the scooter too, pls bear in mind.

Yes bro @topgearalwaysrock got the point. In term of maintain (or invest) our hard earn money on a scooter, it is far beyond what it can do now but how long can it do the same later.

No often but take a little comparison, a Sym GTS/Evo 200 (171cc) cost around $1k cheaper than a Honda PCX (125cc), performance is about the same but Sym can go a bit higher on top speed and better pickup with the bigger capacity engine. Spare parts are cheaper for Sym also, but in the long run, PCX 'may' have less repair work to be done, considering both owners take similar amount of care and when taking out and put back the plastic parts, less chance to break it (this is well known for Honda uses better ABS material plastic), also the paint work is better on PCX.

But if PCX need to done major maintenance or repair, it will cost more due to the very compact design, a lot of parts have to take out before reaching some of the critical areas.

PCX is less powerful but very much better FC, build and design may be closer to human posture hence felt more comfortable for smaller/mid size riders, where else GTS is good for big size riders.

We don't have to talk about Italian bikes as all known their parts are extremely expensive, but the engineering is good, always 'over-engineered' to survive in their kind of environment. One thing for sure, we seldom heard Italian bikes got plastic or screw problem, neither Japs bikes too but it is common for Taiwanese bikes.
