I'm selling my bike - and the buyer wants a photocopy of my IC front/back to do the transfer.

So far, i've done 2 transfers in the past, and during both instances, both buyer and seller were physically present in the LTA office in Sin Ming, so there were no issues.

From my knowledge and after phoning LTA earlier today - I confirmed that photocopy of IC is not allowed when doing transfer, and both buyer and seller's original ICs must be presented. I spoke to the owner and told him that I called up LTA and they said they only accept original IC of both parties, and I'm obviously not stupid/careless to give my original IC.

His proposed plan is:

1) Pass his brother the bike in exchange for full cash payment

2) He will go settle his insurance

3) Pass him a photocopy of my IC and for me to sign on the 'seller' portion of the transfer form and give both documents to his sister. He tells me his work schedule is strict, and he lives in Malaysia (he's a Singaporean).

The reason given by the buyer is that he does not have time to meet me at LTA due to his strict work schedule and will be submitting the ownership transfer through a bikeshop.

Question is:

- Will a bikeshop be able to do transfer of ownership using photocopied IC? - When I bought my new bike from the shop, they made photocopies of my IC and Licence front and back, and within 2 weeks I received the Confirmation of Ownership Transfer from LTA - so i assume its possible?

- If I provide him a photocopy of my IC (which i'm not comfortable with) is there any danger? - as I have heard of instances of friends losing their wallets and people approaching loansharks with the stolen ICs to take loans.

So far for me, I have always pass the original NRIC to the Bikeshop when purchasing bike from them. They might have a way to do it without the original. Since bikeshop is helping him to settle the paperwork, why not visit the bikeshop yourselves and settle your side of the paperwork with the bikeshop directly? It safer this way.

ask him to pass you his IC . see if he willing to trust you. IF he dun trust you why should you trust him?

just becos he want to buy your bike. does not make him any more trust worthy than the other chap on the street.

ask bike shop settle . let them earn abit just to be safe.

only need seller or buyer to be at LTA to do transfer. dun need both to be there.

i wouldn't let him photocopy my ic even if a bkeshop can do a transfer of ownership using photocopied ic. letting him have a photocopy of my ic means that he has all my particulars and information, that will bring me trouble in the future

if hes unable to do the transfer of ownership the normal and general way, then don't bother selling your bike to him already. :thumb:

Nothing is stopping me. Im just trying to see if this is a normal practice or is deemed a 'safe' situation by obtaining feedback from other people who may or may not have experienced the same.

Ask him to get insurance and pass you his original IC. Since he wants you to trust him, he should trust you. I gotten a bike recently and the seller and I didn't go to LTA together.

From what the previous seller told me, as long as he got my IC at his hand he can transfer back the ownership if I didn't pay him after he do the transfer. *I asked him why is he not afraid of me running away or not paying*

From what I see now here is what you can do, ask him to go get insurance first and go collect his original IC from him because he need insurance before you can transfer the bike to him. You go transfer the ownership yourself at LTA and meet up with him but do not return him his IC until he pay you. In the event he back out or what the most you lose the transfer fee money only. So the best is you get deposit from him or make sure you collect the transfer fee if he is the one who bear the transfer fee.

I'm sure this method will help you. :) Do let me know.
