Based on your criteria, XR400 or DR350 will fit the bill. Cheap to buy, cheap to run. Lasts forever with sensible periodic basic maintenance.

DRZ400S is slightly more expensive, but will also be perfect if you can find one in good condition.

DRZ400SM is expensive, as it's rather new in the market.

Forget about Husky TE450, KTM EXC400, WR400. These are race bikes with lights. And of course, maintenance will be higher.

Also, don't bother with 2 strokes like KTM EXC250, Gas Gas EC250, Suzuki RMX250. These are also race bikes with lights, and you'll be lucky to get 10km from 1L of petrol.

Past: KDX200, LC4 400, LC4 620, GSXR750WR

Present: CBR900RRY, Gas Gas EC250, XR250L, XR250RV, XR400 (motard-ed), NX650 Dominator

how is XR 400/ DRz 350/Drz 400 petrol comsup?

My XR4 with FCR2 gets 20km/L consistently. Stock carb should be a few km per L more. No idea about the Suzukis.

Some models have key, while some do not. E.g XR400 and 250 do not come with ignition keys.

Up to you to think of ways round this issue. Some people have a hidden kill switch, while others just make do with disc locks. Some even chain the kickstarter to the frame, together with the disc locks.

For transport and minor trail, XR4 best of the best already.

Super low maintenance, only change engine oil and oil filter every month.

FC, full tank can go around 160 - 180km

Engine is the super duper bullet proof engine.

There's a japanese fella who travelled around the world on the his XR4. There was an ang moh guy who rode his XR4 around asia from england and stopped at SG recently too!
