Ten, nine, eight, seven... crash a party to usher in the New Year

THERE is no reason for anyone to feel lonely this New Year's Eve. At least nine major countdown parties are being planned all over the island on Friday, and there's one to suit every taste.

 

At the Esplanade, for example, Singapore songwriter Corrinne May, who is now based in Los Angeles, will serenade the audience with soulful ballads while local rock band Electrico will jive up the festive mood with high energy numbers.

 

The night will culminate in an eight-minute fireworks finale set to a rock symphony composed by local musician Iskandar Ismail.

 

Ms Amy Ho, programming officer of the arts centre's celebrations, says: 'We don't want to feature foreign artists because this is a local celebration. It would be more meaningful to feature our local artists.'

 

This is the third time the Esplanade is organising a countdown party. Last year's event saw a turnout of about 96,000 and it expects about 100,000 for this year's party, which is free to the public.

 

At Downtown East, NTUC Club has spent about $350,000 for its fifth countdown party. Last year's event attracted more than 40,000 people and NTUC Club is expecting a similar turnout this year.

 

Highlights include acts by Taiwanese rock duo Power Station and Australia's Stayin' Alive, a band formed as a tribute to Bee Gees.

THE NATION'S COUNTDOWN 2005

 

Where: Sentosa Siloso Beach

 

Go if: You are a fan of big parties

 

Expected turnout: Information not available

 

Time: 7pm to 7am

 

Admission: $19 (from now till Dec 31) and $29 (Dec 31 after 3pm), available from Sistic (tel:6348-5555) and Sentosa Visitor Arrival Centre

 

Billed as Asia's biggest countdown beach party, this mega-do is organised by Sentosa and MediaCorp TV.

 

You get 12 hours of live performances from a buffet of performers. Catch DJ Rap, the international queen of tribal sound, and DJ Small, the maestro of local house and progressive, as they pump up the beats for night-long dancing.

 

For those still in Singapore Idol mode, catch Taufik, Sylvester and gang as they perform. MediaCorp artists such as Gurmit Singh and Michelle Chong will also be on hand, as will Wendi Koh and band, hiphop band Chou Pi Jiang and a Latin jazz outfit called The Groove.

 

At midnight, strain your necks to catch fireworks. Adding the finishing touch, sprinklers will release bubbles, 'snow' and water.

 

 

 

PARTY ON, SINGAPORE!

Go if: You want to celebrate the night with your family

 

Expected turnout: 40,000

 

Time: 9pm-4am

 

Admission: Free

 

Before the party starts, have a splashing time at Wild Wild Wet Water Park or get an adrenaline rush at Escape Theme Park.

 

After that, the young and young-at-heart can mosh to Taiwan's rock duo Power Station while sentimental souls can remember the sounds of the Bee Gees when Staying Alive, a five-piece live band from Australia, performs the hits of the Gibb brothers.

 

To quell hunger pangs, head for the food joints in the centre. They will be open till 1am.

 

 

 

NEW YEAR'S EVE AT THE ESPLANADE

 

Where: Outdoor Theatre, Esplanade

 

Go if: You want to reassure your partner of your undying love with a public declaration

 

Expected turnout: 100,000

 

Time: 5pm to past midnight

 

Admission: Free

 

New Year's Eve could just provide another golden opportunity to impress your date. Surprise him or her with a love message that thousands of others can also catch.

 

Local performance artists Kill Your Television will go around the Esplanade with a video camera to tape message dedications. The recordings will be aired on two giant screens at the Outdoor Theatre between 7.30pm and 10.15pm.

 

And what better way to end the romantic night than watching an eight-minute fireworks display light up the sky over Marina Bay at midnight?

 

The countdown event is basically a seven-hour musical show featuring more than 30 local artists like singer and songwriter Corrinne May, R&B band Souls In Session and rock bands Electrico and Rafe.

 

 

 

ASIA MAJOR

 

Where: The Arts House, 1 Old Parliament Lane

 

Go if: You want to soak in ethnic culture

 

Expected turnout: 2,000

 

Time: 8pm to 3am

 

Admission: $28 (inclusive of one beer or soft drink) available from The Arts House box office (tel: 6332-6919).

 

A host of activities awaits party-goers at The Arts House.

 

At the Gallery, you can turn into a drama queen with the help of makeover artists who will be on hand to transform you into a sari-clad Bollywood star or a Chinese opera performer. For the latter, you will even get your face powdered white and pink.

 

At the Blue Room, drop in at Baba Richard's Dance Party. Dance instructors will help even those with two left feet become competent social dancers.

 

And if all this tires you, hop over to the Stage Door Cafe for refreshments and Asian-fused rhythms by the New Asia Band.

 

At midnight, gather in front of the clock tower at Victoria Memorial Hall for the countdown which will be led by jazz entertainer Kuo Po.

 

 

 

NYE PARTY

 

Where: Zouk, 17 Jiak Kim Street

 

Go if: You are a Zoukette

 

Expected turnout: 4,000

 

Time: 9pm to late

 

Admission: Tickets are $25 (including one drink before 10pm and for the lst 300 people) and $38 after 10pm, available from Zouk (tel: 6738-2988)

 

House music master Dimitri from Paris, hip hop and R&B master Flava, Andrew Chow, DJ Jeremy Boon and Tony Tay will do the honours at the various venues. What's special this year is that the carpark outside Zouk will also be a party venue. Called The Enchanted Garden, ticket-holders get free massages, dance performances, fire actors and music. You can continue to chill out outside until 11.30pm, when everyone will be invited in for the countdown.

 

 

 

HALLO'05 NYE COUNTDOWN

 

Where: Liquid Room and Soundbar, 01-05 The Gallery Hotel, 76 Robertson Quay

 

Go if: You are a trance enthusiast

 

Expected turnout: 400 in Liquid Room and 300 in Soundbar

 

Time: 11pm to 4am

 

Admission: $25 (inclusive of one standard drink and party packs) available from Liquid Room (tel: 6333-8117)

 

At Liquid Room, Singaporean DJs Stingray, Kenny and Yukun will spin trance classics and tech-house dishes. The more laidback can head to the al fresco Soundbar where DJ X'ho and saxophonist Kaye will entertain with house chillout and ambient music.

 

 

 

SALSA NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY AT CHIJMES

 

Where: Chijmes

 

Go if: You like salsa and don't want to pay to celebrate

 

Expected turnout: 3,000 to 4,000

 

Time: 10pm to late

 

Admission: free

 

Get hot and sweaty with other salsa enthusiasts and dance to tunes by local salsa band Mint Jam and Latin-infused house music by DJ Monk. There will be fireworks at midnight, and 18 food and beverage establishments will stay open till late.

 

 

 

ULTIMATE INDOCHINE PARTY MARATHON

 

Where: IndoChine Empress Place, IndoChine WaterFront and IndoChine Wisma Atria

 

Go if: You like dressing up in fancy costumes

 

Expected turnout: 850 in all

 

Time: IndoChine Clarke Quay from 11pm-3am, IndoChine Wisma Atria from midnight-3am, IndoChine Empress Place from midnight-3am

 

Admission: IndoChine Clarke Quay $25 and $180; IndoChine Wisma Atria $25 and $100; and IndoChine Empress Place $100 Available from IndoChine (tel: 6323-1043).

 

The theme at IndoChine Empress is Colonial Ball, so dress up in Roaring Twenties fashion. Over at IndoChine Wisma, it's Mardi Gras action and the venue will be transformed into an exotic Caribbean scene.

 

If you want to show off that new cheongsam, it's the Forbidden Ball at IndoChine Clarke Quay where lion dancers and stilt walkers will take you back to ancient China.

 

If you can't decide which of the three parties to attend, pay $180 and you can drop in on all three parties, or $100 to attend the IndoChine Wisma Atria and IndoChine Empress Place parties.

 

Every half hour, an IndoChine Bus will ferry party-goers to and from the three outlets.

 

 

 

KAOS: IN TIMES SQUARE NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY

 

Where: Gotham Penthouse, level three, 3A River Valley Road

 

Go if: If you are in the mood for some hot partying action.

 

Expected turnout: 500

 

Time: 9pm to 5am

 

Admission: $30 (inclusive of two standard drinks and party packs) available from Gotham Penthouse (tel: 6339-5595)

 

The club in River Valley opened on Dec 11 this year and is creating buzz for its spa-theme toilets and huge dance table tops.

 

Mingling among revellers will be the Divas, a group of dancers from the United States and Canada.

 

To up the eye-candy quotient, the party will also feature 25 models in a fashion show.
