Heard of SOPA? It's a dramatic SOAP-opera (wordplay intended) on the decision to seriously shut-down and/or censor websites that promote piracy and/or websites that damage businesses' intellectual property.

The US is considering laws to stop all of these, calling their new legislature the Stop-Online-Piracy-Act (SOPA)

Internet giants like Yahoo, Youtube, Google, and Wikipedia have opposed this. An open letter by all of them stated that SOPA, if made into an effective law, will allow the US government to censor the Internet, much like countries like China, Iran and Malaysia.

So what does this mean? Any website and their owners can be sued and then shut down if it flouts copyright rules.

copyright here and there are too many to manage, we unknowingly wont know. Bankrupt America is just trying to be funny, to scoop some funds to pay their debt instalments.

Well, their government are discussing a bill (as in, considering to make a law) on SOPA and PIPA. But there's 2 things that may let this legislation lapse or even vetoed (rejected) altogether:

1. If those politicians (ministers in their government) that oppose this bill argue and then enough of them were vote to reject it successfully, letting this bill get delayed or thrown out altogether.

2. If the bill becomes actual law, but the President vetoes it.

But until now, we have not heard from the Obama administration yet, or any success stories in the opposing grounds yet.

Even then, even ordinary American people and even big Internet giants based in the US are not happy about this, so it's people against the lawmaking processes.

EDIT: Good news: For now, they decided not to pursue this bill after so many websites purposely "went dark" to express their unhappiness. It will be shelved for the time being

Newsweekly just ran an article on these so called IT moguls who are behaving like the oil barons of 1920s. Apparently they started out with a humble and honorable visions, now they seem to be driven by profit making. They are getting better at extracting personal information from oblivious Internet users for commercial purpose. Think that's why these days we are constantly inundated with ads that seem to be tailored to our taste.
