I have a braking problem with my bike.

It's not progressive at all. My previous bike was a Phantom, and the brakes are good on those cause the feel is progressive. As in you can feel more and more brake pressure build up gradually as you squeeze the lever harder and harder.

But the bike i riding now, the brakes feel very non-progressive. First squeeze of the levers will feel the pressure abit. But if i continue applying, i don't feel any difference at all, then when i squeeze even harder, the brakes will bite TOO hard, resulting in the whole bike jerking.

I've checked the brake pads and they're fine. still has lots of thread left.

only thing yet to check is the master cyclinder or it could be the levers itself. will getting new levers solve the problem?

Check your brake lines. It could be air or water in the brake line. Get it bleed properly. If your brake hose have expanded then its time to invest in a good steel braided one.

but if there is air in the brake lines, it should be a spongy feel instead right? mine is like depress, mild braking, depress, still mild braking, depress somemore, sudden stop.

Worst case is your disc is warped. Get it checked.

oh yeah, just remembered, when i took the brake pads out to check. when i put them together, there is more brake pad material on the bottom than on the top.

as in you would expect there to be evenly worn along both sides but thats not what i'm having. jialat, if warped disc, need new discs, pay through nose again.

i don't get pulsing when i brake hard, which is a symptom of warped disc.

shall bleed the brakes and check if it solves the problem.

thanks @ben1112,

indeed it was the worn piston. The springs are also abit faulty. Got them changed at 95 bucks.

Now at least can ride with peace of mind.

Eh can i use carb cleaner to clean my brake caliper? Not as in dismantle it la... But use it to clear the whole thing plus the rubber and the sides of the piston itself... Is it safe?

When it's worn. No recommended because of riding styles it may vary greatly from rider to rider.

Use brake cleaner. Comes in a can just like carb cleaner.

even so, shud try to avoid the seals and rubber boots. can dry them out. i only use them wen dismantling the caliper, cleaning brake pads or wiping the brake disc.

nah, don't mix carb cleaner with brake cleaner, dangerous as it might eat the material.

use brake cleaner or just cleaning soap.

i only changed the piston and master cyclinder because the seals are worn out, usually last for quite a while. you'll feel a degradation of braking power when you apply lever. inconsistent braking. quite evident.
