Hi all,

I'm new on this forum. I am located in Cyprus and I am a proud owner of a Yamaha XVS400 Dragstar Custom (1996 model). The bike was imported in Cyprus from Japan, in 1998 so I am the 4th owner.

I was looking for a service manual for this bike, and did go to the local Yamaha dealers. Unfortunately I was not able to find any kind of manual for this bike. However I did buy the Owner and Service Manuals for the XVS650 Dragstar. They seem to be identical, except for the engine displacement.

Do you guys have a Service Manual (in English) for the 400cc model? If it's in an electronic format would be great. Otherwise I'm willing to pay for a soft copy of it (including shipping to Cyprus).

Thank you in advance,

Dan Preda

P.S. My email address is [email protected]

Even a hint of where I can find one Service Manual for the 400cc model would be of a much help.

Thank you,

Dan

Hi Dan,

Like you, I've also been searching high and low for dragstar custom's manual (I too brought a 06' model  ). I only know that one person who once has the manual for dragstar classic (physical format). But I don't think he has it anymore since he has sold his bike. Should I happen to get my hands on one then I'll scan the engine section for you.

The bike is almost extinct (06 model), so the manual wouldn't be any easier to find. In any case if you need to know something, I sure there's plenty of people here with the knowledge to help. Just post it!

Enjoy your ride.

Regards

Max

The Vstar from this website is the 650 but other than the 'CC', the rest should be more or less the same..

Enjoy!!!

thanks all for the answer. actually I'm in the process of compilling the part list for the 400cc version (1996 model). i'm comparing the part list of the 650cc model (as found on the american Yamaha web site) with the part codes of the 400cc model (as found on the japanese Yamaha web site). so whichever part code number is the same will give me the similarities between the two versions.

however, there's still the question of specifications when checking the engine compression, carburator sync, spark plugs, etc. will these values be the same as the 650cc?

regards,

Dan

Engine compression, bore and stroke, engine capacity will be different.

I think the rest would be the same

hello all bro here..

i'm totally new to cruiser...

honestly speaking. i never own any big bike before.

but i'm going to get 1.

thinking Virago 535 OR Drag star custom (orange) 96's model Drag Star.

the purpose for this bike is for me to drive to work and of course for travel and have fun with it. i know i'll love cruiser more than racing bike.

so, i have 2 offer here...

1.) Virago 535 year 1997 asking SGD3.8k - fully orignal.

2.) Drag Star 400cc Custom 1997 asking 4.8k - Fully original without modification to the engine itsef. well maintance. Harley exhault pipe. and NEW front and rear tyre. (orange, with back seat suport installed and leather bag included. all padder was replaced and 2 sport light installed)

anyone can give me some idea which is value to buy for me?

please give me some idea. please, desperate for ANY idea and advice.

No offence pal, but both bikes are grossly overpriced. Where did you view these 2 bikes? In a bike shop, I presume? A 1997 Dragstar Custom can be had for around $2k in the private market. Go to Yahoo! Auctions and do a search on Dragstar. You will find 2 for sale. One is an end 1996 Dragstar Custom going for $2k and the other is a 2002 Classic going for $6k. I have viewed the 1996 Dragstar Custom before and the condition is pretty good and comes with 3 boxes. I'm not sure if it's sold, though. If I'm not wrong, the 2002 Classic was sold last year in this forum for about $5k. So, it would be wise to try to bring the price down to below $5k if you intend to buy it. I think the Virago is worth closer to $1500 in the reseller's market. Anyway, these are just my opinions.

So, you will be buying a Dragstar in Johor? Maybe you can check out the prices of various shops. That will give you a rough idea.

Well, I bought a Dragstar recently and now I guess I will be posting questions here! For starters, what is the quantity of 4 T we need for an oil change? Where do you guys get your replacement oil filter and air filter from? Thought I better change the basic stuff on the bike. In the process of restoring the bike to its former glory.

As a former Steed rider, I think the Dragstar is way ahead in its design. The Steed is too Jap; seating position, exhaust sound and engine sound, even the handle. Anyone share my views?

Posted

The oil change should be 2.6 L. I heard that you can use a bit less (say about 2.4 L) just in case the oil overflows.

I don't quite get it about the the Steed being too Jap. The VSE looks a bit more American than the VLX though. Then again, the Steed is a Jap bike.

Thanks for the info on the oil and air filter.

Well, gogojan, I think that my Steed VLX was too smooth (not always a bad thing!) for a chopper. It was also just a bit high and the exhaust was too quiet. It ran well, sure, but to me, it was just a bit lacking in character. I think the VSE is a bit better, but probably the best looking Steed would be the Springer. Just some of my opinions.

Hey, anyone think it is possible to graft a Springer's fork onto the Dragstar?

Hi people, anyone of you guys below 1.6m? I have been eyeing this bike for 5 years since '01 when I first saw it...but think I'll look like mickey mouse on Harley :giddy:

Can I get a ''99-'00 for 3k?

(Classic)

I'm about 1.62m. If you are below that, you still can ride the Dragstar. You mentioned that you looked like Mickey Mouse on a Harley. I can safely assume that you are lighter than my 75 kg frame. Be prepared to put in some effort to handle the bike because it probably can give you a good work out.

For that amount of $3k, it depends. In the shops no. Through a private seller, be prepared to bargain to get that amount.
