Hi mates.. .

take a look at this blog.. done by a singaporean riding solo in china.. you find the infos very useful. This singaporean bought a motorcycle in Guangzhou, ride all the way to XingJiang and then sell off the bike.. buying a motorcycle "illegally" probably is the easier way out..

http://zeevincez.blogspot.sg/2010/06/china-02092008-07102008.html

another forum where you can find some infos on riding in china...

http://www.rideasia.net/motorcycle-forum/forum.php

from some of the reading from the web, its a tedious process to get a valid motorcycle license in china..

if you want to ride your own bike into china, say from Laos into China, then you have to engage a local guide to do up all the documents etc etc..

Which part of china do you have in mind ? im going on a trip to Yading from Chengdu (on vehicle).. thats a very popular scenic riding route in SiChuan. Alot of their local rider ride from Chengdu, to Yading, to Shangri La, to Li Jiang, to Kunming , back to Chengdu..

im interested to do a riding trip in china too, someday, after i get my motorbike license.. im still doing a class 2b.. hopefully can get it by end of this year..

Cheers

Hi mate,

Thanks for the information..I'm planning to ride to Shangri-la with my own bike. I read about getting a guide who can bring me into China. Do I really need a guide in order to get in China? Hope I can get more info from those riders who have experience riding into China.

Hi mates..

I know which route you will be going.. I had planned to drive up to Shangri La - but failed to materialised..

It will take at least 3 - 4 weeks for the whole trip...

Yes.. A guide is compulsory... The last round when i check for 2 vehicles.. i was quoted around USD5,000... the guide will meet you at Laos/China borders of Boten/Mohan... He will do up all the documentations for you.. and he will accompany you along the trip.. you have to pay for his lodging and foods...

I been to Shangri La twice... A beautiful place..always wanted to drive up there.. but failed to find enough travellers to come along..

One alternative is actually to rent / buy a motorcycle from Kun Ming , ride up to Da Li, Li Jiang and up to Shangri La...

Riding own bike is nice..I'm still doing my class2b, hopefully can get my license by end of this year.. May i know what bike are you riding ? Any recommendation for 2b bikes that are suitable for touring ?

Cheers

The last time when i planned the drive up, the route is as followed :

Singapore - Chiang Khong 2500km

Chiang Khong - Luang Namtha 264km

Luang Namtha to Mohan - 58km

Mohan to Shangri La - 1400km

Shangri La to Mohan - 1400km

Mohan to Vientiane - 650km

Vientiane - Bangkok - 650km

Bangkok - SG - 1800km

Total will probably be around 9,000km

There was a group of BMW rider rode to Shangri La last year.. What they do is they ride up to Haytai, send the bike on rail to ChiangMai, Ride into Laos and then into Shangri La..

Wayback, they send their bike from Li Jiang to KunMing.. and then ride back from Kunming into Laos..if i didnt recalled wrongly..

Seriously? USD5000 for a guide to bring u in and around China..

What if I ship my bike to China? Will i still need to get a guide? I'm riding KTM 990 Adventure currently..

I believe posture and comfort is very important if u wanna go for long distance.

Hi mates..

Same .. You will still need a local guide to "accompany" you on the whole trip...it's a real put off to adventurers who wanted to drive / ride into china... Few years back, there was this singapore couple who drive their hyundai matrix around the world...they drove intomalaysia and then shipped their car into India, bypassing china...guess the cost was really prohibitive ...

wow...that would be a great idea! haha..the only problem would be the ex guide cost. i can travel to other countries with that kind of money..

Posted

Thats very true also, the only way to lower the cost is to get a few more participants..however, that will make the trip more complicated ...

Think about it, if you are interested - we can really turn it into a reality..... I'm always very interested to drive up to shangri la...

I did a posting on mycarforum some time back..with details of the driving plan.. Plus map, infos on the road from boten up to shangri la..

http://www.mycarforum.com/index.php?showtopic=2666824

It's a once a lifetime experience...it's not easy for me to find someone who is interested to drive, ride up to shangri la...I think it's also equally difficult for you to come across another person with similar interest as yours... : )

Think about it mates : )

Technically.. no foreign bike is allowed into China.

(But there's always grey area if you pay the right way)

but with exception perhaps at border of Yunnan.

but you are not allowed to ride beyond that on your own.

even with guides there are restrictions, as motorcycle are ban in certain province.

you can rent one and ride though on a tour group.

i did that way when I was living in Shanghai

For those who are interested to ride in Tibet.

http://shanghairoar.blogspot.sg/2011/05/cruising-roof-of-world-photos-part-1.html

btw..no new registration for motorcycle in Shanghai except for Harley, BMW and CJ750, more details if interested...

svit .. i read about the group that rode into Lijiang

will found out more about the trip once I get my Class 2 adventure bike.

Possible but with a lot of hassle. We rode to Shangrila on bikes from Singapore in 2010. But we did not pay USD 5000 but a fraction of it. A guide is mandatory but you can practically go to any parts of China with the exception of Tibet where you require extra permits.

I recently got a quote for RMB6500 for 2 bikes, i am still verifying whether are the company trustworthy or not. The company was introduced by my China stuff from Yunnan. Once i verified them, i will share with you guys here. My plan is to go during end Aug to mid Sep, which is the most suitable period for riding, no rain, nice scenery, nice weather and lesser traffic.

WIll share information again once I get the actual "human" verification of the company. I dont wish to get con just for the cheaper cost.
