hello guys anyone know how to fix my hard disk? here goes!

First i partion my hard disk to 2 partition

C and D

so i can install 2 operating system in the D which is linux and winxp in C

well then i accidently installed Linux at C! and my XP is wipeout and now i can't event use the back up recovery disk.

So i borrowed a XP disk from my friend and installed back XP and at the boot BLUE colour screen it said i have only 130GB do you want to install XP in this partition pls press ENTER. I can see i only 1 partion. And after i install it i click on C drive->properties and it state the size is 130GB How to format back my harddisk even the XP original CD can't help? My harddisk is 200GB thanks alot!

On i've use norton partition magic and it wont help too!

The XP CD that you've borrowed, is it an "Upgrade" version or a "Full" one? Make sure it's a "Full" version because I think that version can erase everything on your hard disk and you can start anew by installing XP onto it.

I have an image of the "blue screen setup prompt". This is where you specify where to install Windows XP. Take a look:

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/3959/server03setup03finalsetra7.th.png

For multi-partitioned setups like yours (C and D), the list will show, well, C: and D:

You need to delete those away by highlighting them using the up-down keyboard keys, then press [D] to delete.

Once that's done, you will have just one item that reads:

C: Partition 1 [New (Raw)] ----- (so and so MB)

==

If it still reads 130GB, XP eats up some of the disk space for extra information, plus, it might be the fact that "200GB" is not really 200GB.

Install XP on that partition.

Install your windows as per normal.

Once installed, right click MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE.

Under STORAGE, select DISK MANAGEMENT.

See whether you can see the 70GB there and if yes, it should be in RAW format and you'll need to format it. Just right click on the drive and select format.

Btw, if you have a 200GB hdd, it will not be cun cun 200GB.

It'll be alil bit lesser.

ya, 8mb will be reserved also, so it'll be ard 192gb...

you will still be able to see ur d drive as well in that screen. if ur d is 70gb, then it's correct...

Yeah, second that.

Have u tried create a new partition in Norton Partition Magic?

If all else fails, boot into WinXP cd, delete all available partitions and recreate the partitions.

After tht format the newly created partition and you will get your correct size.

Your data will all be gone if you delete and recreate partition, so remember to backup all your data b4 doing this.

Juz would like to know what is the HDD brand? Maybe could run the disktools to see and check if the HDD is working fine. Unless u know about DOS, do run FDisk.exe to recreate the partitions. To me this is the best way coz very low level and quite reliable.

Have you check the HDD itself? Do check if the capacity is 200GB. Last thing that can be done is to do a test on the HDD by running a HDD tool like SEATool (for seagate).

Apart from that I can see nothing wrong with your HDD, apart from the missing GB.

I did a search on the net and came up with this:

" This section we will look at ways of achieving large hard drive support. That is hard drives larger than 137 GB (Gigabytes). To achieve this requires 48 bit LBA support from the operating system and from your computers BIOS. We will cover all operating system from Windows 98 and above that have this problem.

What is LBA ? LBA stands for Logical Block address. This was originally only 24 bits for ATA/ATAPI devices, which meant that the largest hard drive you could use was 137.4 GB (Gigabytes). Now that hard drives have increased beyond this size changes where needed. So came along 48 bit LBA. This has increased the maximum size of hard drives to 144,000,000 gigabytes. "

1. It did recommend that the PC BOS be updated if not the latest bios setting. Check with the PC/Motherboard Manufacturer site. (WARNING - INCORRECT INSTALLATION OF A BIOS CAN CAUSE SERIOUS PROBLEMS)

2. Patch Windows XP to SP2. Once patched, should be able to see the rest of the missing space.

Good Luck! Do tell us the results.

Your motherboard is very old(>3 yrs)? Motherboards nowadays would already be updated.

Anyway, faris please reduce the size of your signature. It's almost 2 screens tall.
