2b 2B vs 2A bike

I'm a 19yr old student who's doing my diploma now. My course is mostly HBL, and I only need to go to the campus only once or twice per week. I'm also expecting to get my license by end of April (at Lesson 8 rn, doing at ssdc). I'm having a tough time choosing between getting a 2B bike now, or wait till a year then get a 2A bike. This is because I only go out to meet my friends and hangout, so I don't know if there's any practicality in buying a bike now. I'm thinking of doing food delivery to cover the costs of the bike, but I've been hearing from my friends that the competition is very tough. My dad is against this idea, saying that it's just not worth it to own a bike for now, whether it's new or not. COE prices are also rising, which also adds to my dilemma. What should I do? 

 

My choice of bikes:

- R15 V4 (reconsidering due to height - 1.9m)

- XSR 155

- Honda CB200X

- Pulsar NS200

in my opinion, if you are going to take 2A then just get a 2B bike with 1+ year coe left. you can find reasonably priced bikes on carousell. try not to get a bike that is brand new because chances are you are going to drop it at the start, also due to the high cost and various other reasons. dropping my bike happened to me but my first bike was 9 years old so i didnt really feel the pain.

regarding the practicality of owning a bike, i mean it definitely beats public transport. no need to wait for bus or train, just start bike and go. trust me its worth it. 

 

but try not to get new bike, you might get bored then you will have to find a buyer, and if COI is included then very leceh alr.

Sounded like having a bike is just for fun more than for living, especially with financial concerns.

Get Class 2B license first, and let your enthusiasm cool down first,  then get 2A, even 2.  What you need to do is to wait one or two more years.  You'll get more wildly choices on bikes and suppose to get financial independent from family.  Now it's time to make dream come to true.

To get you cool down,  calculate the total cost of ownership instead cost of procurment.  The hardest part of estimatioin is the cost of incidents, such as parts damage, traffice incidents, fines.  Add up all of them and compare with the cost of using public transportation.

If having a bike is a kind of lifestyle for you,  please ignor what I said.

if do delivery, auto bike is easier.

But then u want to go for 2A, then manual bike.

even manual bike, now w 11K COE...even 2nd hand bike, the price also jack up by dealer.

however, since yr usage will be low (go out meet friends only)...why want to finanical burden yourself since u r a student

So in summary, listen to your dad.

agreed on the dropping bike.. but be it one year coe or slightly more.. get something that you preferred..

yeah.. wait for bus and train.. = unbearable for me.. LOL...

try to sit and feel it if you have friend riding these bikes.

agreed with most of them who say COI is lecheh.. dun go with instalment if possible.. try to save up as much as you can.. buy a 2nd bike..

but what's your eventually goal? if you intend to get a 2A.. you can really consider skipping the first year.. if you think 2B is enough.. then just go ahead with the purchase of 2B but full cash/payment the best choice.. instalments always add up thousands to your final price..

agreed.. on enthusiasm and ownership..

indeed.. if have financial concern should wait awhile more for full ownership.. dun always go with COI..

You are thinking of devoting time to do food delivery to cover the costs of the bike? The value of the bike depreciates everyday of its existence.

You will not like my suggestion but IMO, you should spend the time you intend to use for food delivery on your studies (which has a better chance of giving you a better ROI) or with friends (experiences, memories which you can look back on in the future). 

Buy the bike when there's a need for it (as a mobility device which you use often) or when you have the passion for it (motorcycling) and when you can pay for it comfortably. Don't end up being a 'slave' to the bike (financial commitment).

Not worth to rush to own a bike and then get suckered by peer pressure into a never ending race to upgrade parts and machine. 

Motorcycle is a luxury item you should be enthusiastic to care and upkeep on your own spare time and savings, not get bike and do food delivery to pay it off. 

That said, I was happy when my dad gifted me a motorcycle and paid for most of the license cost many years back, but the first thing I did was start learning how to take care of it and have a zero accident record. 

Not easy considering friends will ask you top speed what and must zhng here zhng there for no technical benefit, eventually I moved on to owning old model obsolete ah pek bikes and today, auto scooter 2B good enough for transportation. 

Why 2B scooter?

Because if you want more power and top speed most of the petrol is converted to noise only, can't use high top speed in SG and public transport becomes cheaper than your bike

Also no one is going to disturb you if you're on nmax and thousands of delivery riders using it stock for years. Non performance used bikes may not be sexy but are used for intended purpose no need to compete.

Want brand new Cb200x next year will sure ask for 400X and won't appreciate it. R15 and XSR what's the point, seek performance machine sure want to upgrade to something bigger in the near future. 

Then I will come and buy your "barely used" Cb200x and mod it as my project bike
