Beside the obviously physical differences, was there reasons why you guys are owning FZ1s and not R1s??

On the practical side, boxes can be added to the FZs.

Were there other strong reasons?

Im deciding between the 2 actually.

Most people go through life following the crowd.

Others think for themselves.

They go their own way.

R1 = sports bikes

FZ1 = street bikes

Main thing = you must know what bike you want (in this case sports or street) then you would get what you want...

But to answer your questions, here are a few differences:

(1) R1 = Sport; FZ1 = Street

(2) R1 insurance > FZ1 insurance

(3) R1 Fuel Consumption > FZ1 Fuel Consumption

(4) R1 machine price > FZ1 machine price

(5) R1 pick-up/top speed > FZ1 pick-up/top speed

You seems to be having a hard time choosing which class 2 bike you are going to get... Same situation that I'm in before... To me only 2 things about the FZ1... Ugly Stock Exhaust (can be solved) and lousy pick up and top end (a street bike can't be compared to the power of a sports)...

I had the priviledge to own the 04r1 n currently the FZ1 , all i can say is tat the reason i change to fz1 is due to tat it gives me a btr ride posture , more pillion friendly, cheaper insurance n of cos the ability to add luggage systems to it .

The performance of either bike is similiar on SG rds . But along the NSH , the FZ1 gets u to ur destination is a more comfortable way , whle the r1 gets u there faster albeit wif some backaches .

Fuel mileage on either bikes r similiar .

Tks for your replies!

I have used a sports bike as a daily bike before.

Also a street bike as a daily bike.

Neither bike had boxes or compartments, so there was always a need for a bag or deep deep pockets for everything else.

So in terms of being practical, there is no difference really.

Only riding posture & performance is different between the 2.

But i have to admit, the fz1 looks great with decent boxes.

(2) R1 insurance > FZ1 insurance

Im 30, how much diff. is there in insurance between the 2 bikes?

(3) R1 Fuel Consumption > FZ1 Fuel Consumption

Im getting abt 14-15.5km/l for the monster now.

Believe both the R1 and fz1 is doing better than this right?

(4) R1 machine price > FZ1 machine price

Diff. between the 2 is about $4000?

(5) R1 pick-up/top speed > FZ1 pick-up/top speed

I saw a dyno graph of a FZ1 compared to a R1.

The fz1 showed better torque curve for the 1st 3 gears.

Once the higher rpms are in use, the R1 takes over.

In the real world, having basically the same motor,

does the fz1 lose out much in terms of pick up?

I feel top speed is not so much of an importance.

How often does one max out 6th gear in a day?

Most of the time, it will be getting from light to light or overtaking.

Accelerations plays a bigger role than top speed, for me that is.

So, when u mentioned lousy pick up on the Fz1, Im wondering how lousy?

Lousy compared to the r1?

yes, the stock exhaust is not a piece of art to look at.

What have u replaced yours with?

FZ1 would be slight better with about 21km/l

(4) R1 machine price > FZ1 machine price

Yes about 4 to 5k diff

(5) R1 pick-up/top speed > FZ1 pick-up/top speed

My FZ1 is my second bike that i own. My first is a phantom200. So either I'm a power craver or FZ1 is not satisfying enough in terms of power (pick up and top speed)

They basically modified the 04r1 engine wif a heavier crank for the fz1 so tat it gives an effect of having more torque . But bear in mind the fz1 is heavier than the R1 . In terms of pick up , i believe both r similiar , while on paper the r1 is slightly faster . Maybe its due to the on-off fueling on the fz1 .

Dyno states tat the fz1 torque curve is higher than the r1 up to 5500rpm n same up to arnd 8500rpm wereby the r1 overtakes it .

Performance on the rd is not tat profound .

Insurance diff depends on the companies u going to . i got quotes of 1.6k for the r1 when brand new n 1.2k for the fz1 brand new . So maybe difference is arnd $400- 600 .

N most importantly , the fz1 wun heat up as fast as the r1 .

tks guys for the input!

how much would brackets and boxes cost?

something like H&B? or others?

Iven seen some bike with removeable boxes from the top bracket.

its nice, when theres no need for a box, just detach it from the bracket.

Gear ratios diff between R1 and FZ1.

1-4 = same.

5-6 = diff. R1 using closer ratio than FZ1.

FZ1 low to mid range has more torque than R1 coz its using heavier crank, hence R1 is geared more to top end.

FZ1 suspension =

Frnt left leg = Comp. Right leg = Rebound. Preload = Both.

Rear shock = Only Preload and rebound. (Sucky).

R1 suspension =

Front = comp, rebound and preload on both legs.

Rear shock = comp, rebound and preload.

You really sure your FZ1's FC is 21km/l?

Our full tank how many litre? dry to super full... i can run 270km on that near totally full tank... so i'm calculating about 12 to 13 litres for our full tank bah... maybe i'm wrong man... if it's then sorry...
