Stay-open warning to 24-hour petrol stations

By Hamidah Atan

15 September, 2007

PUTRAJAYA: The government has given an assurance that all 24-hour petrol stations will stay open despite the decision by the Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) to close at 10pm from November. Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal said the government would ensure that petrol stations continued to operate as usual.

He challenged petrol station owners, who were adamant about shortening their operating hours, to go ahead with their plan.

"They will see what we can do. I don’t want to list the repercussions but don’t try to challenge the government," he said after his ministry’s monthly gathering yesterday.

The ministry is meeting PDAM members today.

"They will meet my officers but as far as the government is concerned, the decision that they operate as usual, stays. No such thing as cutting back operating hours."

He reiterated that those who closed their stations early without permission from the Controller of Supply could be charged under the Control of Supply Act.

There are 3,098 petrol stations in the country and at least 50 per cent are designated 24-hour stations.

These stations are located in major towns, cities and highways.

Shafie described the issues created by PDAM as trivial.

"In the first place, their demands are unacceptable. Whatever it is, we will just give them a chance to air their views or grouses."

Early this month, PDAM spokesman Datuk Zulkifli Mokti had said its members would only open for business between 7am and 10pm.

Zulkifli said this was because petrol stations were facing security risks and declining profits.

He claimed that the average petrol station was robbed once a year and it happened at night.

Zulkifli also said that reducing the work shifts from three to two would help stations bring down operating costs.

The decision to shorten the operating hours was one of three resolutions passed by PDAM recently.

The other two were to stop accepting credit cards because of the 1.25 per cent commission levied by financial institutions on such transactions and to fully implement the self-service system from October.
