Any workshop that comes recommended for the SV400S?

I'm thinking of getting them to install the racing plugs as accessing the front cylinder requires draining and removing the radiator.

(Unless someone has a better method to access the front cylinder spark plug?)

dunnit to drain out the radiator la..just remove the top and side screws holding to the radiator then droop it enuff to remove ur plug..dunnit to totally remove the whole radiator..

it's quite a hassle though..need to remove the side fairings..

btw, do check with previous owner if he still has the manual..have fun..

Stripped the whole fairing set (upper and lower) on saturday, unbolted the horn, removed the top screws from radiator and the radiator doesn't budge much.

I'll try again this weekend.... sigh, 30min just to remove fairings.... =)

And lately the signal lights are blinking real fast (all lights work), but they blink at normal speed when placed in hazard mode. Hope the signal relay (that's under the front seat right?) hasn't gone bonkers.

hey guys, hope you can help me out with this.

been having this problem intermittently for the past few days. In 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear when i rev above roughly 5k rpm, i get engine braking/loss of power. maybe its not happening in the higher gears because i dont have a chance to go to the higher revs with them. The problem comes and goes, sometimes first gear rev to 6k no problem, then when i change to 2nd gear i get the same feeling again. :giddy:

am i experiencing the dreaded one cylinder problem?

anyting i can check myself before going to a mechanic? :help:

You have to use some strength to lift up the radiator.

I think most probably you are experiencing the single cylinder problem due to the heavy rains these few days. It should be fine after the weather dries up. If the problem continue to persist, you can do a spark plug replacement first before pushing the bike to a mechanic for further preventive measures.

Wet weather? maybe... but it should happen throughout the RPM range... not only at 5K... usually if one piston not running, then it should be initial part of the ride, after heating up the water should dry up liao.

Plug problem maybe possible. but then again, why only 5K rpm then power dip...

Sounds like out of sync liao... tuning session required. I suspect... usually when power dip during certain RPM, go for tuning session will solve the problem.... But you say it is ON and Off... like that SCARLY electrical problem  Coil, rectifier, distributer. (but unlikely lah)

thanks for the replies guys.

i also suspect that the problem is water related. does the front cyclinder problem happen even when you start the bike? coz my idling ok, riding low revs also ok, when i try to rev higher then i get the problem. it feels like i shifted a gear down when it happens.

if tuning out of sync, shouldn't it happen gradually? This seems like it appeared suddenly, since last weekend.

time to bring out the bike cover. will avoid exposing the bike to rain, and then see if the problem goes away.

For my former SV's case, the single cylinder problem occurred quite randomly. Initially, I cant trace out what is happening to the bike. Sources told me that my carb might be spoilt or my tuning might be out. But to my knowledge, if it is a mechanical fault, the problem should persist whenever I used the machine. But it didnt happen. I don't have much problem using it on normal days and even after parking it untouched for two weeks while I am away for overseas ICT. The problem only arised occasionally especially after raining or after riding the bike over wet road surfaces. Tell tale signs include idling problem during start up/junction stopping, a sudden drop in rpm when throttle increases/gear changes and jerky bike rides. My preventive measures? Keep the bike covered during rainy days definitely helps a great deal. Also avoid riding the bike over wet surfaces especially through water puddles. Spark plugs should be replaced regularly as it corrodes easily due to water contact.

Seraphim, I have an extra bike cover meant for the SV. If you keen to collect it, let me know. I forgot to pass to you that day. Getting forgetful liao... :cheeky:

just an update on my bike.

Wednesday evening: on the way back, did not experience the problem. Rode around for additional 10+ km, was able to rev freely in all gears up to 6k rpm.

Thursday morning: rode 10+ km, no problems.

Thurdays evening: 20+ km, also no problems.

Friday (today) morning: rev to 4.5k rpm in first gear, problem came back :giddy:

will try and post in the Hands On section to see if i can get more input :thumb:

Ok ok, will consider NOT adding a box.... maybe I'll just strap a tailpack on...

Wouldn't want random acts of violence against red boxed SVs on the road :cheeky:

please please please don't install hard boxes! :)

This problem is the same with some other V-twins with forward facing cylinders, where the forward cylinder is exposed to whatever is thrown at it by the front wheel.

I don't know if a fender extender would help, but cleaning the electrical contacts, plugs and sensors, then sealing it should solve the problem. Use a proper high temperature silicone liquid gasket.
