Wat are the side effects of backfiring?

@Blackenese:

If you are referring to the pop pop pop sound on deceleration, that is not really back firing but after firing. Thats when the gasses in your exhaust ignite. When decelerating, closing your throttle off will also close of the air supply to the engine quickly. But your fuel is still inside and there will be some lag between closing your throttle and also the remaining fuel inside from the last throttle. This lag causes unburnt fuel in your exhuast system and when exposed to the air outside, causes tiny explosions. that is the pop pop pop you hear.

That is quite normal unless you are running almost perfect air fuel mixture on your carbs. This popping can happen regardless of rich or lean air fuel mixture.

If your pipes are ok, and bike is properly tuned, then the pop pop pop should be consistent with every decelleration. However, if this pop pop pop gets very loud on decelleration, you may have an exhaust air leak that allows air to enter the exhaust system allowing an explosive mixture to develop within the pipe, a very loud explosion will result as the pressure wave is directed out the outlet pipe. The side effect: very loud bang. The bad side effect: Your pipes actually can be destroyed and the leak you have either from a hole or crack will propogate.

When u change your exhaust or improve your air flow using hyper chargers, bigger K&Ns etc...if you do not tune up your carbs or Power Commanders to suit the change, you may risk running your engine too lean in certain RPM range. If your bike is new, it is almost guarnateed from the factory it will run lean. So using more aftermarket parts, will make it leaner and this effective further leaning of the mixture can push the engine over the edge resulting in popping. Side effect: constant popping losing performance.

The worst side effect from a lean fuel mixture would be increased chances of detonation in the combustion chamber which can destroy your engine.

Back fire occurs when gasses ignite "BACK" up the intake tract and generally speaking...doesnt hurt the engine too much if not at all as the flames coming out is on the exhaustion process of a 4 stroke engine.

Some questions: What RPM range does your popping occur? What RPM range does a real back fire occur? If your bike is fuel injected, a PC should solve that problem right away. thats why you seldom hear back fire or popping on later model harleys.

Cheers.

I've got the same rack in black on my nightster, and it comes in fairly useful for tar-powing kuay teow and raincoat with bungee straps. $80 is a fair price. Why doesn't it look right, throttle?

I guess since yours is in matt black it matches the bike more.

Chrome just doesnt do it for the 883R

I find that it spoils the modern sporty look, but it enhances the classic look.

did you powder coat it yourself or bot in black originally?

maybe I'll try to powder coat it black if nobody buys.

there's a version that comes in gloss black straight from motherwell, but it moves in and out of stock really quickly as it's quite popular, so you may not find it on motherwell's website at times: http://www.motherwellproducts.com/XL-NIGHTSTER-SOLO-LUGGAGE-RACK-07-UP-MATTE-BLACK-p/mwl-216.htm

i see, but i dont want gloss black, i want matt black....

anyway, i still think my 883R looks better without it.

plus i really have no use for it anyway. only ornamental......

i bot it to try try, since not nice, then dont put...

solo luggage rack for sale $80.

Wow, these are nice Sportsters...But it doesn't look like a Harley anymore ain't it...Looks more like road bikes...Wouldn't it be wiser to just simply get a roadbike but please don't mind me ya, just an opinion...Cheers...

And by the way, check out these bars....Phew....

Oh i see...Didn't know that Harleys are into the Cafe Culture too but it's good...intergration and co-existance definitely works wonders...I like that idea...Metric cruisers evolving into the looks of classics, bobbers, etc..and Harleys are going into Cafe looks...Nice....

By the way, what do you mean by "different strokes for different folks"????...Have a good one....

Well said my friend and that's the spirit...I'm for one am a fan of anything that's on two wheels...even if it's a bicycle...I'll be going GOGO GAGA if the two wheeler past by and it looks awesome...

Well, last weekend was very entertaining and also a sign of more to come for riders in Singapore...which is if there are good support given, the bike events here can be bigger, better and with more things for everyone to see...

Example, the Bike Builders competition held last year in KL during the 3 Nation Ride...That's an encouragement for the biking world in Asia itself and i do hope that one of the organisers here would bring in that competition to Singapore in one of our local bike events....Hopefully ya...

I'll try to upload some of the events pics from USA that was emailed over to me by my photojournalist friend from California and i do hope that everyone here will enjoy it as much as i do...Cheers to everyone in this forum and let us ride safe....Have a good one....
