IT will be even cheaper if you get it from the EBAY......:thumb:

I'll second that. In fact some Harley stuff are not as expensive as compared to Japanese bikes...contraty to what alot of people think. But of cos there ARE some parts which have killer prices...like the exhaust heas shields for example... :cheeky:

hi guys! i just got my 1st Harley!! an 06 Sportster 883R.

not sure if it's me or a technical issue, but i can't seem to engage neutral gear when the engine's running. the only possible way is to cut the engine. And even also, i can't get it engaged from gear 1. i keep having to engage gear 2 before kicking down to N.

Is this common? I didn't have this issue with my previous jap bikes.

Hi,

Ya'll get used to it bro. You may try changing clutch cables...or see if ur clutch cable is being tied down at many points...making the cable stiff...or when was the last time the transmission oil was changed? People used to use solely Harley Sportrans for the transmission oil...but there are much more choices now. Other then that don't worry, itz not likely to be a big technical issue.

Disclaimer: My opinions is just dat....my opinions. You may still wish to check with a qualified mechanic. :thumb:

if you have been riding bikes for years, it shouldnt be you.

should be technical issue.

Check your front clutch plate and gear oil NOT engine oil. Could be clutch plate.

Do you know the history of your bike? If it's been serviced regularly? Shouldn't have that problem. The sporty's neutral is very easy to engage. It's just slides in nicely.

thanks for all the replies guys..

haven't had a chance to ride these couple of days.. only did so on saturday and sunday.. will try to take her out for a spin and 'train' myself.

i have the full service record of the bike. it seems very well maintained but i'm now wondering if there really is an issue with the clutch plate. where's a good place to check this? any shop to recommend or must i bring it down to HDS?

I think it's more or less normal to be able to engage only from 2nd or 1st. I can get into neutral only from 1st gear.

For not being able to engage when the engine is running, throttle with the clutch in and then shift. You would find it's easier to get into neutral when the RPMs are up.

It's your damn bike, wash it yourself! You rinse your own mouth after you eat, don't you?

My first Harley was a Sporty. Didnt have any trouble shifting, but Harleys are known for the clunky gears as compared to other bikes. But should not have to turn off the motor to get into neutral.

Most indepedent shops should be able to figure it out, Harley dealer is probably the last option. I took some saddlebags down to Motorwerks and they modified them for only $5 so very happy with their level of service and price.

Good luck.

well, maintaining a good servicing is one thing, but parts sometimes you won't kow. It just gives way. My bike (non Harley) had the same problem and the gear was feeling chunky. Feeling it was the front clutch plate, I got it changed. When my mech took it out, the edges were shaved off. After that smooth.

You can try Rosli, (where I did my ex sporty) at Eunos Industrial or Tony, Sumson, Combine etc. Last resort then I guess dealership.

Oh extra note, do warm up your bike properly before moving off. Helps the smooth transitions of gears. :)

thanks guys.

will probably bring to a shop to get it checked.

any meet-ups recently? maybe can let the more experienced harley riders try it out and see if it's a 'me' problem.

Just swing by the dealer. Usually a few riders hanging out front or you can ask one of the sales persons if they think its a problem with the bike.

Also, usually last Sunday of the month, the HOG group organises a ride. Not sure about this month due to CNY.

finally had a chance to ride my bike today after 4 days and i'm happy to report that this method works!! thanks dude. never imagined that a little bit of throttle can make such a big difference.

No problem! It help when you are slowing down and downshifting too.. give a quick throttle and downshift. You'll find it's easier to downshift that way but it takes practice since you need to depress the front brake lever, blip the throttle, pull in the clutch then release it, kick down a gear AND depress the rear brake pedal all at the same time. Both arms and legs working at the same time! :p

yeah datz got something to do with matching the enigine and gear RPMs making it easier to shift...I do dat too...blip the throttle abit before downshifting...reduces the "clunk"...and hopefully reduces the wear on the gears as well... :cheeky:

if clunky when down shifting , it simply means you are dropping to a gear which doesnt match that particular rpm .

the blipping is done often on the track when we have to drop gears from high speeds.
