Hi Guys,

i've a HD Original 1200 Roadster Seat, taken off a '06 model, used less than 1,000KMs on the seat, as good as new, sitting in my storeroom, FOR SALE!

It'll fit any Roadsters 1200 with the peanut tank from '04 model onwards, for anything else, i'm not too sure. IF keen, do drop me a line @ 9846-6814. Tks.

Darn, means we have to plan routes that avoid ERPs. Like a obstacle course. Hhahaa..Harley riders with their expensive bikes scared of 25cents ERP. :p

I think from Shenton Way to Padang or Esplanade that bridge to Fort Canning Tunnel is ok, just a left turn past City Hall and Capitol building. It's after that. Personally I like to go the back way, up the hill pass between National Museum and YMCA and end up the back of Orchard, pass all the traffice. But I kinda like riding thru town. :p

Yo, PBS,

You seem to have a sound knowlege of the roads and erp gantries n its timing.

would you b so kind as to be plan the ride routes.

(note , this would make you the road captain - leader of the pack - thus you would be stationed infront all the way)

too many chefs would spoil the soup.

so you are the 'chosen-one'

thanks in advance

Preventative Maintenance 101

Checking and Changing the oil

The oil in your Sportster engine is, in the opinion of many Sportster Enthusiasts, the most important thing in your Sportster engine and I agree. CHECK YOUR OIL DAILY

Air and Oil are the only two ingredients keeping your Sportster engine from getting too hot and destroying itself while you ride.

Be sure that you check your oil DAILY. It does not take but about 2 seconds to look inside your oil tank to ensure the oil is at a proper level. REMEMBER - CHECK YOUR OIL DAILY!!

I have known a person who did not check their oil on a regular basis and blew up their Sportster engine because there was no more oil in it. This happened because he did not CHECK HIS OIL DAILY.

Now, everyone feels bad when someone's bike breaks down but when it is caused by that person's lack of responsibility for their own bike then I personally do not feel too sorry for them. I'll wait with them as the tow truck comes to take their Sporty to Sportster Heaven, make sure they have cab fare to get home and I will cry over the death of a Sportster but I will not feel sorry for the person who let their bike get into such bad shape. CHECK YOUR OIL DAILY

Yes it is true that the engine can be rebuilt, but that sure does seem to me like a waste of money that could have been easily prevented.

Fortunately changing the oil on your Sportster is probably one of the easiest basic preventative maintenance procedures that you can do yourself and takes only about 30 minutes if you go slow. I am not a mechanic, far from it, so if I can change the oil myself so can you. This goes for men and women.

You do not need to pay an HD stealer or indy $100 - $150 dollars to change your oil. My cost for the oil change that I do myself is around $20. You can probably do it for less money but I live in Germany where they love to tax the crap out of you and double the price of all HD parts.

Did I mention that you should CHECK YOU OIL DAILY???

Right now you may be thinking to yourself, "But Bert, I understand that I should check my oil level everyday, but how often should I change it?" And I would say to you, "Well, that is a matter of opinion which can be the cause of great debate."

Some people swear that you should change it every 500 miles while some take pride in telling you that they change theirs every 100 miles. There are about as many different opinions on this as there are people who have a Sportster.

The O-FISH-ALL HD owners manual shows that after the first 1000 mile (1600 KM) inspection your should inspect the oil every 2500 mile (4000 KM) and replace it every 5000 miles (8000 KM). I personally change my oil every 2500 miles.

I think you need to make up your own mind and determine what is best for you based upon your riding style. If you like to run at 5000 RPM all the time then you may want to change you oil a little more often. If you never ride of 60 MPH (100 KPH) or under 4000 RPM then you may decide that the HD recommendations are good enough for you.

What you will need before you start:

1. One new oil filter - I like the chrome HD oil filter but there are many oil filters from many other companies that will fit. There is an oil filter cross-reference chart on the webpage right before this one if you do not want to pay HD prices.

2. 3 quarts of oil (2.8 Liters)

3. 1 medium or small flat tip screwdriver

4. 1 oil filter wrench

5. 1 used oil container

6. Clean rags - about 10 or 15 just in case

Choosing your oil. I will not even begin to try and tell you what kind of oil is the best for your Sporty. The reason I won't is because there are probably thousands of different oils and for each of them there is someone who will swear that theirs is the best. If you want natural or synthetic oil you make you own choice.

My own personal opinion is that for normal everyday driving you will not go wrong it you purchase a major name brand oil that has the correct viscosity for your climate and you change the oil on a regular basis.

1. Remove the Oil Filler Cap/Dipstick

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0012.jpg

2. Place your used oil container underneath the front of the frame and try to center it under the oil filter (if you do not know which thing in this photo is the oil filter please look at the next photo and come back to this one).

3. Place your oil filter wrench on the oil filter and turn it counter-clock-wise until it is loose enough to turn by hand. Notice my oil filter wrench. Not all oil filter wrenches look like the one in this photo. I like this one because I can use it at an angle in tight spots (like on a sporty). There are oil filters wrenches that will work with your ratchet also but I have not been able to find the right size over here in Germany. There are also oil filter wrenches that will make this job much more difficult. Shop around until you find one that you like best. They do not cost much so you can try out different ones.

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0005.jpg

4. Once the oil filter is loose enough to unscrew with you hand, slowly unscrew it off the rest of the way. The oil filter is full of oil so when it comes off be sure the open part if point up, otherwise you will spill oil all over the place. Once the oil filter is off place it open side down in your used oil container.

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0006.jpg

5. Let the oil drain out. You be ready with a rag to wipe the excess oil off of the engine case and oil temp sending unit after it mostly all out. Don't worry about getting oil all over the place as not much oil will come out.

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0009.jpg

6. Next you will need to locate the oil drain hose. This is locate behind the clutch and under the swingarm. Place your used oil container underneath the oil drain hose as shown below.

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0013.jpg

7. Unscrew the worm clamp (counter-clock-wise) until it is loose enough to pull the hose off. Do not worry about oil coming out. The oil will not come out until you pull the hose off.

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0016.jpg

8. Gently pull the oil drain hose off until it is completely off and the oil will begin to flow out and into the use oil container. The oil will drain faster if you hold the hose down while it is draining.

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0020.jpg

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0022.jpg

9. Once all of the oil has drained out replace the oil drain hose and tighten the worm clamp (clock-wise)

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0026.jpg

10. Next you will put on the new oil filter. First wipe any excess oil off of the oil pump.

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0027.jpg

11. Inspect the oil filter inside and out for any damage and then place a thin coat of oil to the rubber gasket.

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0029.jpg

12. Put about 4 oz. of oil in the filter and then place it on the oil pump and turn it clock-wise until it is as tight as you can get it with your hand. Insure that that it is going on correctly so you so not strip the threads on the oil pump. I only hand tighten mine until I can not move it any further. I do not use the oil filter wrench when putting the filter back on.

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0031.jpg

13. Now fill the oil tank with oil. You should put in about 3 quarts (2.8 liters) minus the 4 oz. you put in the filter or just to the bottom of the tank opening.

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0036.jpg

http://www.linson.us/harleydavidson/sportsters/bertshowto/oilchange/images/20030621-SPORTSTER=OILCHANGE0039.jpg

14. Replace the Oil Filler Cap/Dipstick.

15. The last thing you want to do is reloosen the oil drain hose and let a little bit of oil run out. This will eliminate the air bubble that is formed in the oil system. Then tighten the worm clamp back up.

16. Start up the engine and insure that the oil check light turns off. Then check for leaks around the oil filter and oil drain hose.

Should be ok. Harley batteries have high amperage and will last more than 2 weeks before it needs recharging.

I read your posting on the battery recharger thread and the Ctek battery chargers are good. I'm using the XS3600 and it recharges the battery a bit faster than the XS800. I dunno about the Sportster, but for my FLSTF, the battery amperage is around 20 Ah, so it'll take a long time to recharge if you're using the XS800.
