Hi all, i have a question regarding braking mid-corner.

Let's say you're taking a rather tight corner, but you miscalculated and entered too fast. Now, in mid corner you realised that you are running wide and there's obstruction preventing you from leaning lower (another rider like in the case of motogp).

In such a situation, usually we lean in more to counter the centrifugal force, but if you cant lean any further, is there an alternative? And what are the complications?

If apply front brake, bike straightens up, runs wide and crash. If rear brake, risk low side. Seems like easing off throttle is the most safe thing to do?

RIDE.

the one time i experienced such a situation, i made the split second decision to 'give up' and simply pushed the bike upright, allowed myself to run off the track and do controlled braking on the gravel while keeping the bike upright. experienced minor tank slap, but thankfully came to a stop without falling and without heading anywhere near the barrier.

based on the outcome, i felt i made the right move. eventually you have to decide that there is no more correct answer available to keep you in the game and all you can do is to take an action that leaves you with the least possible damage. turns out i had zero damage, and even though i was out of the track and my friend whom i was chasing and exchanging places with for several corners got away, but heck i wasn racing for real so who cares, safety first.

even gp racers perform this move when they decide they really cannot make it anymore.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!
