Hi guys...currently im riding s4 revo and using engine ice. Just need an advice about how i D.I.Y on coolant change and flush the radiator. Pls correct me if im wrong

1) remove radiator cap and drain nut to drain out the coolant. While waiting for the coolant to be totally drain off, remove the coolant reservoir and drain the coolant.

2) take a hose and put at the opening of the radiator. Turn on the water tap and let the water runs. At same time monitor the water that have been drain out and make sure drain the water till its is clear. OR THE WAY I DOING IT IF GOT TIME, put back the drain nut with just a hand tight and fill up the radiator full with water. Then start my bike and let is runs 1 or 2 mins, remove drain nut to drain the water. Repeat till the water is clear.

3) Refill the radiator with a fresh engine ice till is full. Shake the bike left to right so that the air in the radiator will be out and the coolant will go down slowly. After the coolant as fill up fully, the balance coolant will be put in the reservoir.

4) start the bike and let it runs till the radiator fan start to run. And the same time, monitor the reservoir to check whether the coolant is at the correct point.

Just sharing on how i d.i.y and need some advice and pls correct me if im wrong. Thanks in advance

for proper flushing, its important that u run the engine till ur radiator fan turns on to make sure the thermostat is open and circulate. if not, there will still be old coolant stuck inside.

one proper flushing method (but risky) u remove the hose that exits the engine and enters the radiator (provided u can confidently identify this hose), run the engine whilst filling water in the radiator. basically creating an open system so non of the old stuff is re-circulated (water enter radiator -> engine -> drain). its safe as long as u maintain the level in the radiator and make sure the system doesn't run dry. (even better if u have access to water from tap. just keep it inside the radiator and keep water running.)

then do one cycle with DISTILLED water to wash out the tap water that might contain minerals that could have long term detrimental effects on the cooling system.

last tip is when starting the bike for the first time with the new coolant inside, leave the radiator cap open. run it till its hot and shake the bike. it will bubble and burp, so careful of hot coolant spewing out! once the violent bubbling is done, top up as required in the radiator and reserve bottle, close all caps and make sure everything is tight, then ride around slowly and take note of the temp. once u are back, check levels in the bottle again.

A ride a day, keeps the doctor away!

The problem is im having troubles to run the engine while doing the flushing..its bcos the opening for the radiator is under the tank. I have to put the back to run the engine and it will totally cover the opening for the radiator...

Is it possible to support or jack it in a way that u leave a gap above the radiator? leave the cables and fuel lines intact.

the cables and the fuel lines is short. even when i try to remove the cables and the fuel lines by lifting up the oil tank, my hand have to squeeze it to reach for it. i ever see when the 1st time i went to my bike shop for coolant flush, the mechanic use fuel injection canister to connect to the fuel lines. he used it to react as fuel tank.

Folks, need advice here. I changed and flushed coolant 6 mths ago but shockingly discover that my coolant is nearly empty now. No signs of leakage found. I am riding S4. Anyone knows where has my coolant gone?

Possible that ur head gasket leak = coolant leak into ur engine oil. Suggest u change the EO and see if its milky or have a weird consistency.

Tks for the advice, Naim.

i like water wetter better. i used maxima twice changing it out yearly and there always seem to have some sort of soft stuff growing in the coolant:confused:

Thanks!! That a convenient coolant to get, haha

Been abt a year bro. I believe its normal for coolant to decrease over that period?

cooling system is a close loop and abit of lost is common but if you are losing significant amount, i guess it might be leaking somewhere.

by right you should top up with coolant but i think distilled water should be fine. still, i will change it out by the 2nd year or so.

Point taken bro. Its not a significant decrease but rather the normal lost i believe.

Only concern if mixing with other coolant would give an adverse effect.

most coolant mixes with distilled water at a ratio of 50/50. adding slight amount of distilled water into the reserivor will not bring down the ratio to a point that it causes problem. it should be pretty safe.

still, do change your coolant every 2-3 years for better protection.
