Bicycle Speedometers on motorbikes

http://www.alpentourer.com/accessories/spe...peedometer.html

this guy fitted on his Varadero. Cool.

Digital Speedo on non-digital speedo bikes. Now it's possible to get accuarate speed readings. Has anyone here done this before?

These bicycle speedos are only as accurate as the correct input of the rolling circumference of the front wheel. The cheaper speedos, like the Cateye Velo8, the wheel circumference input is in fixed interval, something like 21" to 27" so it isn't that accurate if your wheel rolling circumference is between the interval, such as 26.5". The better speedos will have input in mm increments, so these are more accurate.

Usually the meter are designed to be removable, so it's quite safe.

As these are intended for bicycle, you would need to lengthen the wire when mounting on long fork motorbikes, such as scramblers. And they are not rugged, especially the wires, for off-road ridings.

It does take some creativity, and improvisation to mount these speedos on motorbikes.

One big disadvantage of these speedos is that there is no permanent backlight, and the buttons are using spaced too close thus it will be difficult to use with gloves.

There are similar speedos but are designed for motorbikes, such as the Trailtech Endurance or Vapor.

yup.

as long as you know the circumference then no prob liao.

i using a cateye velo5 on my wr200.

so far so good.

only prob is rainy days it cant read.

but cheapo products la, cant complain much

i wanted to do the 3-in-1 meter at the top.

how much did you do it for and where?

is it rain proof?

Hi bro, the 3-in-1 meter was brought from Looi's motor, $50, not waterproof.

Happen 2 times rain water drip inside & cause mulfunction, but it back to normal after the water dry out.

Hi bro, thanks for sharing your experience bro.

Not waterproof then might be an issue. I am worried once malfunction it doesnt go back to normal anymore =/

Furthermore I see that your setup had a big windshield covering it already.

But it looks tempting. All the 3 sensors that version S needs...

Any idea if there is a waterproof verison of it? =)

i have a cateye velo8 on my bike.. sad thing is that it does not have back light.. now i thinking of fixing a led light just above the meter so that i can see the speed at night.. and the wire is too short for my bike and i have the sensor and magnet fixed at the spokes.. cannot reach the hub.. to extend the wire, can just cut and extend izzit? no need any special wire??

thanks for your help guys.. the positioning of my sensor is now very off as it sticks out of my fork and very close to the spoke where the magnet is.. so i need your help! haha..

You want something cheap, and without mess ? Go to Mustafa, they are selling the Clip-on LED light, one is less than $2, and a nicer one less than $7.

Just buy any copper wires, cut and join. If you are doing trail, get wires with thicker jacket.

Can't picture your explanation, a photo would help.

Fix sensor on the trailing edge of fork for better protection.

If you bike is disc brake then fix magnet on disc. Best magnet to use is the kidney shape magnet from Harddisk. Just epoxy magnet on rotor, make sure the magnet doesn't interfere with the caliper. As these magnets are very strong, you can afford to position it further away from the sensor, about the thickness of a dollar coin.

how do u measure rolling circumfrance?

at the point where u install the magnet then calculate 1 round isit.

how have u guys done it?

Things done so far:

Brand new rear suspension, new rubbers in carbs, serviced carbs, double bubble windscreen, voltmeter, Pilot Sport tyres, Did o ring + VAZ sprokets, front brake pump, gaskets + waterpump oil seal, Maxima CoolAid, 2nd hand rear hugger, 2nd hand front brake disc, Fizz Power brake pads front and back, 2nd hand front and back rims, Yusa battery, Reconditioned 2nd hand carbs by Planet, Front sticker number plate, front wheel bearings, new clutch plates, fortuna paintwork sponsored by spastic driver, Keitin tank pad.

Need sugar mommy for : Hel brake lines and top end overhaul.

yea the rolling circumference is the length around the whole wheel izzit? i think my setting not quite right.. cannot synchro with my current speedo cuz it is spoilt alr..

I can't get mine to run properly as well, I use the rolling distance and use formula 2 x pi x R also can get it right. I test run on the express way... taking the distance marking as the reference... finally got it right.

The Cateye Velo8 is not very accurate because the wheel circumference inputs are in fixed interval based on standard bicycle wheels such as 21", 22", 23"...etc. In other speedos, such as Trailtech Endurance, the input is in "mm", so those are more accurate.

So when used on motorbike, you just have to find the closest match.

Anyway any bike stock speedo would be at least 10% optimistic, ie. speedo reads 100kph, but actual speed would be about 90kph.

see my point is, if the rolling circumfrance was something absolute like the length around the whole wheel, wouldnt you have to place the sensors at absolute points too? so for those who placeed it on their disc brakes, which distance or circumfrance did you measure?

The rolling circumference of the wheel is to allow the sensor to know the time taken for it to rotate one full circle which is how it derives the speed.

As long as the magnet is somewhere along that axis, the time taken to rotate one full circle is the same. In another word, the distance travel becomes greater as it (magnet) moves away from the centre, but time taken remains constant.
