Yeah, a weekend trip of riders sounds good.

Btw, does anyone have a spare chain-guide? I've been waiting for FJT and BoonSiew to get back to me for an entire month, and they don't have that particular spare part? Do you know where i can source for it?

It's a simple piece of rubber/plastic that ensures the chain doesn't hit the swing arm. Simple but important, and i've been listening to this annoying (and painful) sound of chain slamming onto the swingarm when i close my throttle. (more slack).

Or are there aftermarket chain guides for vfr800? thanks guys.

Bro...try after market chain guard at Chong Aik desker rd...they might have but u have to call up first and check.

FJT hopeless for less common parts lar. i had to wait one month plus for my ST11's crashbar cover. After i sold my bike then they called me. Better to order from online..

Hey wrecker, tho is nice (& expensive), i think there's no need to get a VFR specific guide. You can get one from say a Yamaha Spark or any other cheaper equivalent and install it. I think it should work.

alternatively, a 3mm thk neoprene strip from some discard glued on can work tho this may not have the raised centre.

Give it a short and let us know.

cheers

Hi bus_wrecker Bro ,

You might want to PM BlackBandit. He might still keep the parts .

I believe the last pc was brought by K.W, he changed at K&T before our may day ride.

try online...

http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/

Or the after market ones like what vfrT suggested.

Past rides are already history....

Current ride: FW VFR 800 ABS

Dude,

Fuel consumption is dependent on your riding style but along SG roads, you can expect somewhere between 17-18 km/l. With a 22 litre tank, you can expect 350+ km between fill-ups.

Parts availability is not an issue. You can go to Boon Siew or Ah Boy for normal wear and tear parts.

Maintenance is not a big problem for VFRs. Quoting magazines, "It is one of the best bikes ever built" What Bike? Magazine. Engine is bullet-proof although you might encounter the odd electric problems which is common with Honda bikes.

As an all-rounder, it suits most purposes unless you're intending to go off road. You can commute, track or tour with it. If you frequent our highways often, the bike will be most happy.

The current generation for the 800cc is Gen 6 (since 2002), if you exclude the VFR1200. I'd not recommend the latter cos it has a small tank and has got mixed reviews. There were several upgrades for the Gen 6 with the latest major one being at 2006; change to the VTEC transition.

Hope this will sway you into joining the V4 militia.. Cheers!

IMHO - 5th genners rocks & the best! I'm into my 3rd 5th genner!

Why I think its the best?

1. Runs on cam gears as opposed to cam chain = no need for periodic chain replacements.

2. No vTec = no stepped (artificial) power curve that is more felt than real.

3. No Vtec = half the cost for valve adjustment, tho I've never done it in any of mine, the last ran fine for 125,000km before I replace it with a newer old 5th gen.

4. No underseat exhaust that smells yr clothes and sacrificed underseat storage.

5. Oldies like me likes the more classic rounded organic shape than the 6th gen angular modern style.

6. Its cheaper la.

Sorry abt this 6th gen owners :o

bad point abt gen6 is the lack of underseat storage space. I love the exhaust most. VFR rocks!!!

Hi all,

quick question

1. When should you do valve clearance/timing belt check? 50k KM?

2. Squeaky front fork. Time to replace the oil in it?

3. What engine oils do you use? Synthetic 10W-40 for general every day riding? Or a heavier oil, eg 10W-60?

thanks

julian

Hi all,

quick question

1. When should you do valve clearance/timing belt check? 50k KM?

Ans: Honda factory manual (5th gen) recommends 24,000km valve clearance inspection. My pref: Listen to yr engine - For valve clearance, listen for valve clatter; if it gets too noisy or loud - time to re-set the valve clearance.

For Timing chain (not belt) for 6th gen - listen for chain lash. to get an idea of what it sounds like, imagine a steel chain flapping against metal as the chain as it rotates. If the chain lash is loud - it may be that the tensioner needs looking at or the chain has stretched excessively. More likely the chain tensioner/guide will wear more often; but you would usually chain them as a set since the engine has already been open.

2. Squeaky front fork. Time to replace the oil in it?

My ans: Squeaks from the fork will usually come from the fork seal which has seen its days. Be certain that it actually comes from the fork and not a binding brake or wheel bearing as you are bouncig thw front end.

Fork oil should be changed regularly. I change mine every 20,000km or 2 years whichever is nearer.

3. What engine oils do you use? Synthetic 10W-40 for general every day riding? Or a heavier oil, eg 10W-60?

My ans: 10W-40 is ok tho i prefer Mobil M1 20W-50 synthetic as our weather is hotter. 10W-60 is also ok but it may cause excessive drag on the engine and increase fuel consumption.

thanks

julian

Thanks vfrT,

i've just clocked 10K KM on the bike. So far so good, no big problems.

As i use it everyday to get to work from GP, i'm slightly paranoid on the maintenance schedule. I really can't afford the bike breaking down on me in the middle of the 2nd link.

If there's a way to arrest these potential engine problems before they crop up, and when you know it's cropping up, that would be great for newbie VFR owners. (if my bike could sms and tell me exactly what's wrong with it that would be superb, maybe that's for like future bikes. haha)

My bike is due for it's next 6K KM service, so would like to know what's worth inspecting and solving before yeah, i get stuck on the highway and have to call a tow-truck (expensive!)

thanks

cheers

Bro, just change ur EO n Oil Filters every 5k and you should be fine...coolant for me is yearly but I do monitor my temp...if it keeps increasing time to change coolant and change the coolant cap if necessary....its a jap bike so reliability is not such a problem(unless u don't do ur oil change)....the only concern is more electrical.....
