Hi everyone,

 

I've got a fender eliminator on my R6.

Basically, my plate is the right size, visible and everything, but without the ugly stock fender.

 

It looks like this (with a plate, obviously..):

I went to VICOM a couple of months ago to get my inspection done ahead of the due date, and they said it wouldn't pass because of that missing stock fender.

 

I feel like this is kind of arbitrary, as I had the same argument with another VICOM last year, but after an hour or so of chat they eventually made me sign a paper saying that I am "aware of the danger it represents".

 

Anyways. I see lots of sportsbikes with fender eliminators in Singapore, so I was wondering, there must be some nice sportsbike friendly inspection centre out there... Maybe someone here could give a good address to try out?

Depends on the inspector.. Some will let u off some won't.. Some good inspector will see your bike then let u know that it won't pass before he actually checks your bike officially. Which means he won't fail u and ask u to come back and re inspect. However this depends on your luck. In some cases if LTA riders just happen to be there at the inspection centre, even he want to close one eye also cannot..

If you want to be on the safe side, go put one ugly extender then go for inspection. Then after passing it, remove the extender.. Always a pita this..

they have became stricter and stricter these days

i used to have no problem passing with fender eliminator, but last 2 years i was forced to change back to stock

this year worse, they spotted my full system and made me change it back (after more than 7 years of passing inspection)

Fender eliminators are road hazard as the rear fenders are supposed to protect other road users behind your bike from stones/debris that could be picked up by your rear tire and water during raining. Though I agree our bike would looked a lot better without it.

But stones are flung out from the top or the bottom of the tire? And.. If spraying water is a concern, shouldn't the trailing bike observe the 2 sec rule thus ensuring no water will be sprayed into the bike behind due to the 'specified' distance kept?

 

Just my thinking.. Not opposing to anyone personally.

if the tiny stones get embedded into the tire thread, there is no telling whether they would be flung out from the top or bottom. those flung out from the bottom will not cause serious injuries to others, but imagine they gets flung out from the top, and with such velocity, may hit others in the eye when they do not have their face shield in place. that's is the reason why fenders only cover the top half of the rear tire. of course such occurrence would be rare but still authorities around the world would not risk it.

Having said that, I am not against fender eliminator, just stating the reason why inspection will not pass. I myself also looking for one for my bike.:btw:

I do understand your point Jack. But as you mentioned it's a very low possibility and to be honest if flying stones are the main concern, I guess a long rear fender is needed that goes from the tail light ( the highest point at the rear) to almost the ground instead of most fenders that we see just covering the top of the rear tire.. Meaning we should be seeing rear fenders like a gown instead of a knee length skirt - to use a ladies dress as analogy. Quite weird if you imagine a supermoto which has a tall rear in particular.

 

Yes and like you, I myself would go for a fender eliminator if not for the road regulation.. Lol

I have to agree with jacktan23 here. Riding, even at a comfortable distance, behind a bike with a fender eliminator is bad for your health. Rocks when it's dry plus reduced vis from rooster tail in the wet.

 

You don't have to be right behind to get hit. Was following friend up on NSHW, a decent distance behind, got pinged by gravel in the FF.

 

The length of most fenders cut off the rocks that fly upwards at a steeper angle, the ones most at risk of hitting you in the face. Make no mistakes, yes, rock and gravel still get thrown off the wheel with a fender in place, but most of those are low level, not arcing at your face.

 

When it rains, the fender cuts off spray that does a massive rooster tail behind you.

 

As for the 2 sec rule, if going by rules, then the fender eliminator is required by rule (law) making that point moot.

 

To riders behind, it's an annoyance at best and a danger at worst. Not to mention pedestrians who might cross behind a bike, some may cross immediately after the bike and get smacked by flying gravel.

 

Gravel and such can carried on the tyre to a higher position where they get launched at a tangent to the point of detachment. Is also why there is a rear hugger, to protect the underside of your subframe, rear of your engine casing, shocks, linkage and underseat exhaust from excessive debris strike.
