Hi there peeps! I just wanna ask if it is safer (and cheaper) to get a 2 stroke or 4 stroke (preferably sport/naked bike like NSR150SP or FZ16, but other suggestions are also welcome!). There are alot of articles talking about the difference but they are mostly refering to dirtbikes (which I think the reason why they keep talking about maintenance costs due to the high stress on engine during racing), but what about general everyday use and maybe just a tiny bit of spirited riding?

I heard that it also depends on the previous owner of the bike, but is it generally safer to get a 4 stroke or 2 stroke ? Im 18 this year (and still schooling) and going to take BTT in about 2 months.

Also, what are the costs involved ? I only know need to pay Road Tax, Parking, Insurance (4 stroke is cheaper i think, maybe got to do with fairing also ?) and maintenance cost.

And if i approx earn $350+- from my part-time job, is it feasible to maintain a bike?

Many Thanks ! :D

4 stroke for better FC. Dont go for sports bike because insurance cost a bomb and the FC and maintenance dont come cheap too.

I see bro. But what about maintenance ? If suay suay something spoil how ? Im currently looking at the FZ16 as it is quite new (less likely to spoil and more efficient due to newer technology) but most of those 2nd hand are at least 2012 onwards. If I get that i scared i cannot sell after using for 3 years ( because the bike will be underused during NS period and none of my family members have a motorbike license). Any opinions are welcome. Thanks !

Bro, I also haven't NS. Bought my bike in 2013 and my NS would be in 2015. My bike is fully paid already. Nothingto worry. Be practical, you know what is good for yourself. Sometimes, we just have to settle for something much more convenient. Personally, I wanted to get KR/SP etc due to them being sportsbike anf fast bla3. But then changes my mind to 4stroke instead. Thought of getting first hand r15 or fz16, but then figured that they cost too much. When i decided to get used instead, figured that those models are relatively new and i might have to work part time just to support my bike. I'm not saying you have to be like me and get a moped like spark etc, your needs and motivation might be different. What i would recommend is to survey prices first. And see whats within your budget. Best if you can clear loan within 1-2yrs. Best is of course if full payment. However, knowing that insurance will cost a bomb, i think that will be difficult. Just fyi, I had already saved up around 2.5k when i wanted to get my bike. The bike cost me 3.2k with a coe til dec 2018. Add my insurance of $9xx. The remainder was on loan and glad that it wasnt that much and "heavy". Settled it all recently in August, took less than a yr as i sometimes make double payment. When i go ns next yr, nothing to worry. Now i dont want to work part time so much also can. As long as i have prepared money for insurance and wear and tears. Sorry for the long post. Anyway, a cheap 2 stroke to maintain and own would be rxz. As for 4stroke, do consider the mopeds. Most other bikes are either too financially heavy or too ugly for a youth(ybr etc) hahaha.

Thanks for your opinions bro ! Greatly Appreciated ! I did some research and found that the FZ150i seems to be a middle ground for me (looks not bad, fuel efficient, newer = less likely to have alot of wear and tear). Thanks for reminding me the insurance part, I almost forgot that part hahaha ! Planning to do full payment if possible, but how does it work by installments ? (As in give direct to owner or through a bank?) For example, if installment is $100 can I give $300 if I have the cash ? Thanks !

With the direct owner of the bike, I'm not so sure. You might want to check with others in the forum. From what I know, it would be good to have a black and white binding agreement if it is just a "carry on installment". If you intend to take over the ownership, then you guys will have to do a transfer of ownership. Please check on that. I'm not sure as I bought mine from a shop. It's some old school shop. But definitely trustworthy and reliable. You can try to visit them. Meng Motor Co - 211 Jalan Besar S(208896)

About the $300, should be no problem of its with a shop. Just tell them you are making 3mths payment? But remember to ask for a receipt. Some shops, just cannot make it, sure will carrot the p-platers.

If you buy directly from the owner like i did,you need to settle on the price with the owner first, set the payment mode (e.g. Full cash,Bank Transfer,Cashier's Order) Then set a date to meet at LTA. Once you're at LTA,tell the reception you're there to do a bike ownership transfer, and they'll guide you through.Whole process wouldn't take more then 30 minutes. But remember to have the owner bring along any spare keys, bike's manual, accessories if there are any.

If you're planning to pay by installments from shop, you'll have to settle on the price with the shop directly(try to haggle the price or ask for freebies e.g. Free servicing, accessories) Then settle on how much you're gonna Pay Per Month and for how long. The lesser you Pay Per Month,The Longer you'll have to pay.

As for COI from the seller to you through the bike shop, give the shop a call.As some bike shops don't allow COI transfer.Meaning the seller have to clear out his outstanding dues in order to sell the bike to you.

If u like sp, go for it follow your heart. Since u kw they are abit costly, save up first.

I'm a poor guy, but wan to ride. So save for my lic, and save abit more(for rainy days) to get a kr.

But 1.8k is used solely on the insurance already and another month to ns. But nothing goes wrong to my bike, nothing major. Of cause, luck plays a part as well when getting a used bike. And I was lucky.

Most important thing, don't rush yourself to get one. Aim was to get a sp since my 1st lesson but saw a cheap kr, so i just grab it.

Of cause, need to save here n there abit throughout ns la cause left not much cash.

Oh ya, I work part time all the way till Ord.

Ya, saved a lot of $ then..

Diff between 2 n 4 stroke is 2T only what, what bullshit is a 2 stroke bike cost more in maintaining it. Just keep it stock, be lta friendly. My kr fc is 31-35km/l. Parts can b found almost everywhere. Just bring an experienced rider with u when choosing your ride.

Thanks Kicson and Haokr for the input ! Sportsbike the pricing is ok but is the insurance makan quite abit more than the naked bike category. Thanks for clearing my doubts about the maintenance of 2 stroke vs 4 stroke engines ! :D Btw why your insurance is so high ? Is yours 3rd party or comprehensive ? For me the bike can transport and play abit can alr haha ! Sitting in public transport sucks lol, sit there like one idiot nothing to do, somemore must squeeze with other ppl XD

And a few more questions :

1) For example if I have ridden for 1 year, does the insurance for my next year of riding go down by alot ? Or a tiny bit only ?

2) For 2T bikes, does it come stock as premix or with a separate tank for the 2T oil ? And it only needs petrol, engine oil and 2T oil to run right ?

Thanks in advance !

P plate, below 21 and sportsbike = exp insurance.

After 1st year,u get 5%. 2nd year another 5%.

Ops, it's 1.3k for the first year.

1) Over 21 then go down a bit more. otherwise about 1k+ for ah pek bike and easily $1600 for 2T sport bike.

2) Usually separate tank. But you can take out the tank and premix if you like. Yes those three and a working battery would be good too.

Lol hopefully its 10% lol ! Can save me money = good !

Btw why those 4 stroke naked bike like pulsar is more expensive compared to SP & KRR for same year or maybe longer ? Is it because the SP/KRR need more maintenance and insurance ?

And why got so many SP/KRR being sold ? Too old alr ?

Thanks in advance !

it really boils down to what you really wan? my advice would be to get a cheap bike and pay cash, dun burden yourself w the monthly installments. 2stroke are generally faster, 4 stroke are not hence the fuel saving. maintence wise it theis almost the same. just buy a bike which is you can pay full cash. eg yamaha 125z or rxz, honda wave. dun bother w spark 135cc coz generally speaking the bike are overpriced especially those 2nd 0r 3 and so forth. 2yr coe left selling 2500sgd and up, wtf
