NEVER EVER EVER put yourself to the left side of a heavy vehicle if you can avoid it especially closer to the front. The driver cannot see you at all.

By right we will not be at the left side of a heavy vehicle if the rule of heavy vehicles keep left is strongly adhered to. Sadly now heavy vehicle drivers also want to speed and be on the right lane citing that they also want and need to rush here and there.

read this article. This is why lane splitting is safer. In the US lane splitting is illegal in many states, and motorcycles being rear ended account up to 40% of the motorcycle accidents. And even those lane split accident is less serious than those who had accident when they were not lane splitting.

Well I'm not saying to lane split at all times. just lane split when you are overtaking. and dont be like those uncle and hog between lane 1 and 2 at snail speed.

haha, it went from lane split to save money, to actual lane split reasons, to safety, safety gears, specific safety gears

Thought i should share my own experience with TS.

1. i've been a driver and a rider... more a rider now cause of the freedom :)

2. I am totally committed to safety on the road... i rode my phantom with FF, jacket and gloves. Yes on a hot day too... who cares what others think right? its my skin :)

3. riding a 2A bike now and yes... i land split like u

First lesson i got on land splitting was from a goondu who honked me ceaselessly on an EXPRESSWAY when there was a JAM. I thought as a driver if i see a bike in front of me i'm perfectly ok with that... but NOoooo... He honked and wave to me to get out of the way... NOT a good experience as i've never land splitted and if you have a TA200... you'll know thats not the best bike to do lane split... and i was so afraid of hitting people's mirror... I know how that feels. and i didn't want to induce that.

Anyway thats what started my land splitting experience.

Second lesson. Goondu lorries that REFUSE to over take you when you're already at the LEFT MOST lane... they will just CHASE you all the way maybe just for fun... and refuse to overtake... what do you do? no power and no place to run... you'll be force to try and get out of his way... remember... he can just roll over you if he's a nutso... so how? just lane split and overtake the slow van in front of me and let him stress the van instead of me.

Third lesson. This was a waking up point for me... remember how we are all taught to keep the the left of the lane? Yes this may save you some day... i was check my BLIND spot and spotted a SUV overtaking a car and coming into my lane. So instinctively i accelerated and looked to the front... voila... the car in front of me JAM brake (remember blind spot check shouldn't be too long... haha it might become unsafe...) because he was turning left... i think it was a merc... and yes their brakes works alot better than a phantom because his tires are like really broad... so as i was already more on the right... i did an E brake and also swerved to the right in the sense... lane split... and manage to just avoid that bumber by prob about 2-3 inches... and the driver prob was none the wiser... and just turn....

All in all... there are alot of goondus out there... most driver only look at their front... as they only care about paying their insurance... We as riders must always keep out SA high and get our selves out of situation that might endanger our lives.

As for the queue in all situation.. once you take lesson on the 2A you'll know why all the big bikes will never queue for too long... the engine produces too much heat... especially for the S4... it can literally bake your tights... ya... bake. all red and looks like 3rd degree burn... if you don't wear a pair of jeans.

So... please be safe on the road and don't stick behind trucks, taxis and bus.... ride slow on a rainy day and keep your eyes open for all dangers :)

Ride well!

yeah i encounter all your scenarios which is why i choose to lane split. I lane split all the time unless there is big lorr, bus or suv blocking and i can't overtake.

I rode s4 revo for 1 year + never encounter burning of tights. It only happen when riding at lesson in circuit bec of 2 hrs of below 40km/h. What u experience in circuit is extreme, no 1 rides for 2hrs for less than 40km/h if you are riding revo please send it to the bike shop and have them take a look.

what a long thread. nice read. i can add that, lane splitting lets me see further in front and anticipate road dangers better. also saves time on the road. it's not because of ERP lah. heck, i ride outside of ERP hours so saving money isn't a consideration when lane splitting.

i'd also like to add that when lane splitting at high speeds, what's more important is your RELATIVE speed and not your absolute speed. you might be riding at 90 kmh but if everyone else also riding around that same speed, you have time to manoeuvre and execute defensive riding when necessary. of course, lane splitting at 90 kmh in a traffic jam is asking for trouble...

last but not least, if lane splitting, do be aware of bikes behind you. if they are faster, please move over to the middle of the lane and let them pass.

yeah well said. I agree with u. The optimal speed I think to lane spilt is 10km/h faster than the cars beside. more than 20km/h faster is quite dangerous already. might not have time to react when car abrupt change lane.

Just a though open for discussion...

When lane splitting on the highway or any mainroad, do you guys 'weave' in and out of traffic, meaning you pass cars on your left and right alternatively or do you guys prefer to pass between 2 cars side by side.

Personally, I prefer to pass in between 2 cars side by side because it's unlikely that a car will switch lanes when there's another car next to him. But, it means that if a car drifts out of his lane, you get sandwiched, have no where to evade, and crashing in such a situation will mean getting run over.

Also, when splitting and passing a car, do it as fast as possible to reduce time exposed to danger. So splitting on the highway is not done at constant speed, but rather rolling on and off the throttle as you pass cars but at the same time generally riding at a resonably safe but faster speed than the traffic around you.

Does not like to weave in and out as described like majority of the J plated bikes.. Rather lane split as you would doing the plank in the practical lesson. However that is when drivers always say riders are always speeding. They expect us to travel as slow as them even when we lane split which is more dangerous as that will always leave us in the blindspot area.

I lane split by doing the "weaving" method.I dont really like going between 2 cars because like what you said.If 1 driver veer off his lane, you're a goner. But by doing the "weaving" method, some drivers may perceive you as being reckless when its only us swinging the bike left and right to avoid hitting their side mirrors.

I've the habit of not riding in the middle of the lane but instead to the left of the lane. Directly in line with the car's side mirror in front of me. I find that safer and easier to lane split as you don't have to swing your bike to much to lane split

Always observe the driver's driving pattern before lane splitting. Also take note of the vehicle's front wheels.

Just to save on ERP? Nope. I lane split whatever the case may be! It's the primary advantage we have over cars, and if we don't capitalise on that advantage, what's the point of riding at all?! Like some bros mentioned, it can be extremely dangerous to stay in between cars especially in a jam...

Having said that, I'd be the first to admit that lane-splitting isn't exactly the safest thing to do. Take all necessary precautions and don't road hog!! Think there's a thread here somewhere with very good advice on how to lane-split properly, minimising the risks involved with good road etiquette, and getting to your destination in one piece.

Agreed, sometimes i just want to lepak and enjoy riding at about 70km/h, but those freaking lorries keep tailgating me, even those the lane on my right is clear for them to overtake

Don't LS and lorries, taxis and all those mofos who like to tailgate will tailgate, LS and sometimes you have to follow behind some stupid unker who is filtering slower than the traffic, follow for a long time still never move away, never check side mirrors type.

I know that feeling. Sometimes just wanna cruise all the way to our destination. Even when travelling on the expressway in the wee hours when there are not many vehicles. Meaning for every km you see about 1 or 2 and usually even no vehicles and some drivers will tailgate or high beaming you when the other lanes and even the most right lane is clear. Guess its an attitude problem.
