Each manufacturer has it's own procedures, so follow your car's manufacturer's guidelines.

Typically, Jap cars use a very light oil for running in, up till 1500km. These light oil doesn't carry heat well which is one of the reasons the advise to go easy during this period. Then change to mineral oil for next 5000km. Thereafter you can decide to switch to synthetic oil.

Some cars such as BMW are pre-run-in ie. no need to run in. They use synthetic oil since birth, and first servicing is 25000km later.

so do i also need to use a "poorer grade" petrol to season the valves first. I've heard plenty so I'm not too sure if it really has any impact???

Thanks a milion

Thats total rubbish.

Use only whatever petrol grade that's recommended in your owner manual. There is no harm in using higher grade than recommended except you are only wasting money. However if you are using lower grade than recommended, then you risk engine knocking which could lead to catastrophic engine failure.

Most higher end continental cars have engines which are factory run in.

first day you can redline the engine, no problem....these include Mercy, BMW, Volvo, Saab, Porsche, Ferrari, etc...

Whatever Demon mentioned above is 100% true.
