Try looking around for a used Canon Powershot series camera. The image quality is great, 3rd party batteries are available on eBay and just be sure to check the cam is in good condition before plunging in for the purchase.

Oh, and go for at least a 4.0 or 5.0 megapixel camera. Shoot in maximum resolution, that will give you great photos. Get a few extra memory cards too.

Current ones are at 10.0mp minimum.

You plan on getting a used camera or a brand new camera?

Either way, http://www.clubsnap.com might unearth some good deals in the sales sub forum. I sold my DSLR there within a week of posting. Lots of people selling their cams, from DSLRs to old-school Leicas, to normal everyday Powershots too.

Used cams depends on luck. With your budget, getting a 5.0MP camera would only be possible if you buy used. Then again, you might get a good deal on a month-old camera selling cheap.

If you're buying used, take a normal test photo with it, noting the horizon or any straight horizontal lines. Then download to laptop/PSP/other device, or view on the LCD. Some budget digicams have misaligned image sensors, resulting in off-horizon shots even if held straight.

My previous Olympus C300 Zoom had this problem. Even if I shot a photo straight, it will still come out tilted because the image sensor is misaligned.

Get the FujiFilm F31FD, you'll have no regrets. Best in its class, you can check out the reviews and pictures taken with it in the hardwarezone and clubsnap forums. Only drawback is that the design might not be too appealing. Other than that, its a great P&S camera.

Or if you have a bigger budget, go for its replacement, F50FD, although users have commented the extra megapixels were not necessary.
