Hi,

in Singapore I ride a (fairly exotic) Italian MotoGuzzi-V11.

But while I was in the state of Kerala/India last week, I managed to rent a Royal Enfield model 'Bullet' for a day.

http://www.mogdoc.com/fotos/India/kerala_04.2006/enfield31.JPG

Its quite fun to ride, in the silent side-roads of the backwaters around Alleppi, but also in the buzz-busy-crazy traffic of Kochi.

Yes,

its tru, the gearshift is in the right side, and you *pull* for 1st gear, and push further down for 2nd to 4th.

And the rear brake lever is on the left side.

The first km I ride verrrry carefully and exercise, before I dare to dive into the traffic.

http://www.mogdoc.com/fotos/India/kerala_04.2006/enfield11.JPG

The sound with the original exaust pipes is tremendous - like a steam boat rolling arounf the corner!

Power-wise, it seems underpowered, even on Indian roads. I happened to be overpassed many times by locals riding on their Daelims. But I was relaxed - it was my holiday...

Summarizing:

Oldfashined bike, with a nice time-zapping experience...feel like 40 years back.

However, not useful in Singapore unless you are a vintage lover.

You get better value-for money elsewhere.

Have a good May-1st holiday

hi G.H,

saw u saying that somebody overtake u on the indian roads while u were riding a bull(thts the nick for bullet)..dun think that ur bike was useless to them.. juz wanna let u know that when i was back in india a couple of weeks earlier on my bull i seen nobody(i mean bikes) overtaking me... OH ya.. that too on kerala.. but they were juz lookin at me n my bull as i overtake them on my bull with 50 year old technology.... its still the most powerful bike produced in india...

ask around any indians(n by that i mean ppl who r born n raised in india) abt which one is their most powerfull bike n everyone in one tone will agree thats its that same OLD BULL....

the 2nd link u have given is abt DIESEL bull.. yes u heard it right diesel... first n last (on large scale production) bike on earth to run on diesel.... fuel economy was 70++KM/L of diesel.... the bike was a flop as its vibration was too high...u would feel like u r on a tractor rather than a bike.... oso had some startin problems as te indian version was kick startin type... pick up was oso bad...

anybody who needs further information on bulls( right or left shifts ) can contact me.....

G.H... no offends if my post was too much... the fact is that i love this bike very much that sometimes i overreact when somebody blames it as a olddie or as a slow machine...

thought to give u some help for choosing bulls.....

the bull G.H tried is the original legendary bull 350 (looks a deluxe indian version to me)

engine type is cast iron engine, 350cc,4 stroke, air cooled engine

18 BHP @ 5625rpm

it has a right gear change and left rear brake...

4 speed gear box

ignition is CB point (mechancal)

max speed is 100kmph

kick start only

quite heavy bike.....

but the bull available for singapore is 500/350cc

23bhp @ 5000rpm

only left gear change (correct me if am wrong)

5 speed gear

electronic ignition

self/kick start

max speed will be somewhere around 125kmph/75mph..... though i have seen some claiming 80mph...

for more info refer to

bull's home page----- choose indian if you are looking for indian bikes(right/left gear shift).... for singapore users choose UK or US as the bikes are same as those in singapore (left shift only).

they have a technical discussion forum( COMMUNITY---->BULLET-IN-BOARD ) for modifying, technical knowledge...... here u can post ur doubts n experts will give u answers...

indian motorcycling forum----- need to register b4 u can browse the topics.... but they have a seperate section for bulls...

oso can search on yahoo for bull n u can find various groups who share knowledge abt bulls...esp DIY.....

Chullan, what took you so long to come in here?

Good to hear from someone who has real experience with the bike..

One thing though, the Bullet IS a slow bike and certainly an oldie so i cant understand your stance to begin with.

Also, those are the exact reasons why we are in here admiring it so hope to see you around more often.

Machine Price : S$6700

GST : S$ 335

The bike is 350 cc. But at one glance it look like 200 cc bike.

Top speed about 100 km/h only. Very nice sound. U can even upgrade

ur pipe for much better sound. Universal have it.

Overall it's a bit heavy. 350cc version come without Electric Start.

It vibrate like no any other bikes but once u get used to it, should be ok la....For vintage bike lover, one should at least view the bike...

Check out Bullet Army 500cc - the nicest among the Royal Enfield..

Good day...

thanks Azlan,

What is the fuel consumption like per litre?

"Doing nothing is better than being busy doing nothing"

Posted

Official website claimed it to be 30km per litre...

Universal mechanic said the same thing..

Based on the past week, i think it's quite close...

For a 350cc.....which is 2A range, it's cheap...

Will keep u all updated...

But one thing for sure...it's such a beauty, though my

Bullet is the chepest model...

Never get tired admiring it...

Pictures will be on the way very soon..

Then marco, I reckon u hang on to those bikes...

Your CB350 looks more vintage than my Enfield...

Superb AP plate...

The only advantage Enfiled have is dat it's easier to maintain, since it's new and being single head(piston).

royal enfield used as MP bike in India ! there's so much there in India..its like our phantom in SG..

2 roads diverged into a wood, and I-I took the road less traveled and that makes all the difference!

may b u guys wanna take a look at this

From Cycle News, July 5 edition, story by Alan Cathcart:

"More details are becoming available about the new-generation Bullet engine

being developed for India's Royal Enfield company, the future viability of

whose Chennai factory's annual 25,000-unit production of the range of

air-cooled pushrod OHF single-cylinder Bullet retrobikes had been called

into question by the tough new Euro 3 noise and emission regulations due to

come into force for the European Union in 2007.

"As reported earlier this year, this has threatened continued sales of a

product directly derived from the first Bullet produced at the company's

factory, then based at Redditch in the British Midlands, back in 1933.

"But now it's confirmed that the Eicher transport conglomerate that now owns

Royal Enfield has taken steps to protect the growing market for its products

in the EU, including its number-one export market in the UK, where 600 bikes

were sold in 2005, by commissioning British development company Ricardo to

produce a new unit-construction OHV engine available in 350cc, 500cc and

600cc capacities.

"This oil/air cooled engine still features pushrod operation of the two

valves per cylinder but is otherwise very modern, with roller hydraulic

lifters, crossover gearbox, a gerotor oil pump, and the facility for fuel

injection, even though it's believed that all four running prototypes

presently undergoing testing are fitted with carburetors.

"Enfield executives are understood to be eager to retain an old-world "feel"

to the new engine, both visually and in terms of performance, but they've

also chosen to develop a long-stroke 600 Euro 3-compliant version of the new

pushrod motor, in case its extra capacity is viewed as necessary to counter

the loss of midrange torque entailed in meeting the new environmental

standards with single- or twin-cylinder engines of this type. That was

already so with the Euro 3-compliant Moto Guzzi 1100cc pushrod OHV motor in

the Italian company's Breva 1100 and Griso 1100 models, where the loss of

Guzzi's fabled V-twin midrange grunt necessitates active use of the

six-speed gearbox.

"Royal Enfield is also understood to be considering introduction of a range

of V-twin models essentially similar in concept to the Australian-built

Carberry V-twin motor developed three years ago, but based on the new

single-cylinder engine whose cylinder-head design would be appropriate for

V-twin use. Enfield is also believed to be studying the development of a

large capacity parallel-twin motor for export markets.

"At the same time, Eicher - which recently sold its Indian-based tractor

division to U. S. giant Massey Ferguson, leaving it free to focus on its

remaining truck and Royal Enfield motorcycle operations - has commissioned

R&D British specialists Vepro, a Coalville-based design consultancy owned by

former leading Triumph engineers Rick Cronk and Neil Payne, to develop an

all-new chassis platform for the Bullet range. This range will be complete

with more modern but still thoroughly retro-inspired styling that will still

position the products of the Indian company as the most authentic of the

several retro-models available in the marketplace aimed at recreating all

our biking yesterdays."
