Can give more exact description what sort marine related job u expecting, the scope of work in these industry is just too wide to explain.

I've been in this industry for 17yrs since age 17 right after my O level. Start off with nautical studies & been sailing till i'm 27 (did ns in between) before i finally stop to land a shore job as a marine terminal operator. most of these operator are the petroleum industry followed by containerised terminal. I opt for the petroleum terminal cos u can say dat its quite an everlasting trade. The demand for petroleum will always be there as long as mankind will survive.

Life was tough at first, not quite really dat ideal for a cry baby though, but then, there was too much adventure in these line for me to bother about all those. After all these years, still quite a lot for me to learn and the experience is never enough. But then, it was all worth while. Glad i've made the right choice.

I start off as a deck cadet on a Maersk Line ship which is part of the practical for singapore poly nautical studies student. I work my way up to obtained my Class 3 COC which enabled me to become a navigator (2nd mate). This are the best time during my career life as i get to travel to many parts of the world & at the same time facing all kind of natural elements which are sometime quite amazing and sometime quite life threatening that can give me several sleepness night.

As our economy improve dramatically, i quit sailing and landed a shore based job which pays slightly less than going out to sea but enable me to go home everyday to my new found family (get married & blessed with kids).

I kick off my shore career with Shell (pulau bukom) for about a year before moving off to Tankstore (pulau busing). After about seven years doing almost the same routine daily, i quit & move over to Jurong island VLCC terminal also holding a supervisory role.

To think of it, i've spend about half of my lifetime in the marine industry looking at ships and the beautiful blue sea throughout my career. So far, still enjoying it.....:thumb:

haha.... there are tonnes of story to tell about sailing life... most of what seafarers will tell are the good ones whilst unpleasant stories such as home sickness, gigantic waves, fighting among the crews and many others would just go untold.

As for piracy, i am quite lucky cos never had to encounter them so far. These is because of the strict piracy watch and preventive measures taken on board to deter any sort of piracy activities.

When travelling into piracy infested waters such as south africa or south china seas, no master will leave anything to chance. the vessel is being guarded round the clock as though a warship awaiting to be attack. But what fear me most is during those gulf war when we have cruise up & down persian gulf, its like we goin to strike a mines anytime or those nasty gun boat on fast craft goin on their shooting frenzy picking on any vessel as their target practice. But then, only abt 1 out of 100 ships are misfortune enough to encounter them......

clon3 >> yes, shipyard would want u .

sss_man>> I done some sea time too, but as a cadet. Realised that its a nice job but its not for me. So now at shipyard... equally bad hahah thats when I realised , every place also got its bad down sides.

The only excitment I encountered is ship sailing into a bad storm, waves splashing onto the stern deck. Vessel Swaying from left to right .. :giddy:

In order to sail as deck or engine cadet, u must at least have o-levels or higher, then attend sma's courses: nautical studies for deck dept, marine engineering for engine dept. plus stcw courses: fire fightning, first aid etc. then u r eligible onboard.
