bro, u try start the bike after warm up and rev the bike. if the bike goes above 13.8 not above 14.5, i should say its charging. if u rev and it still 13.8, i think it there MIGHT be something wrong. if u rev and it goes below 13.8, lets say it goes to below 12, IT IS TIME TO CHANGE THE BATTERY, as it is undercharging. it could affect the coil and rectifier..

initial start should be above 12.5V.. after a warm up/long run, it should be near to 12V.. but if u rev and never see it increase or decrease, it could be because the battery cannot take extra load of current. this is what i learn while i was a vehicle mechanic 7 yrs ago. no harm done changing the battery bro..

Good day to all... let me share my experience with my faulty rectifier... so in future whoever encounter such problem knows what to look out for. I'm not pointing directly straight to rectifier fault... but if you have the same symptom as me... it "Could" be rectifier fault. Dun get conned by any bike shop to change your coil+rectifier+etc....

Anyway, those who have not installed a volt meter... it's a good investment to add to your bike. It can tells whether if there is any fault in your electrical component. memorised the volt reading... and if one day the volt reading is not regular... then it's time to check ur electrical components(fuse box, battery, etc.) I had one incident where I noticed irregular voltage... and checked to noticed one of the fuse is burnt.

Anyway, my problem happened to me when my bike is travelling for a distance... until the bike is hot and the rectifier is hot...then the voltage dropped from my regular 13.8-13.9v to 12.+v. After which no matter how much I rev my bike... the volt will remain 12.+v. This problem is tricky because when I turn off my ignition and restart my bike... the volt reading goes back to normal 13.8-13.9v. Have to make the rectifier hot again by riding or revving for a few minutes then the problem will happen again. Because of this, it makes the mech hard to detect whether it's the rectifier fault. Now the mech at Unique learnt from my problem. Haha...

He found out the problem is on the rectifier because he took out the rectifier and rev my bike... (bike is on paddock)... when the volt starts to drop... the behind of the rectifier where the small crack is ... starts to bulk up. Voila... problem nailed.

Thanks for reading. Oh yeah... total damage for a new rectifier = $245. Definitely cheaper than the other bike bike shop which quote me $555 to solve my problem.

its best to change both battery and rectifier together.... learnt it during my 1000cc days...

3 cases

1) battery cannot hold or take charge, it will bounce back to rectifier...rectifier cannot hold the bounce back, it will throw back to coil...or

2)rectifier cannot charge battery, and bounce back to coil... or

3) coil cannot supply enuf current to rectifier, rectifier not enuf supply to charge battery, battery never received charging current...

and the outcome is worse..

:) fyi, this topic was discussed few yrs back.. its ok coz the thread is lost way way back in the 1st couple of hundreds back..

thats why government millitary vehicle have voltmeter and amphere meter.. coz it will detect electrical problems symtoms...

SAD. i dropped my darling gsr400 for the first time today in a hougang carpark. didnt kick the stand down properly, so the whole vehicle fell to the left when i tried to get down.

stupid thing is that the frame slider went INTO the mud. you know how those carpark lots have patches of grass. so in the end, the slider was protected, and the engine area got scratched. -_-

anyone knows if the plastic piece covering the engine is replaceable?

Every part of the bike is replaceable if u have the money. U mite wanna check up with Loois cos that part is not readily available.. May have to wait for it.

thanks for the advice. :) i have the sliders to thank for minimal damage to the rear though.

maybe i'll keep it that way. nothing like a scratch to bond man and machine after all.

Go to your trusted mech shop. Tell them to get the parts from Guan Hoe. If part(s) is/are available, they can get it for you. I think no issue getting the 600cc parts if it can fit on a 400cc.

Furthermore, they can get the parts cheaper than yourself going there.

The problem is that once it dropped to 12.+v it does not go up even if I rev the engine.

Anyway, I went to Unique new branch at Toh Guan and that place is really sparkling clean for a workshop. When I arrived, there are no bikes being serviced at that moment and the whole crew of about 6 people came to attend to me... I was feeling like being in a motoGP ... haha.

Ok, after inspection by the Mech from Unique, they came to conclusion that nothing is wrong because it's damn crazy... when I went there... the volt reading seems to be all ok.

I am quite impressed by their detail spot check. They even take out the rectifier and did a thorough check with all the wirings. Too bad in the end, only can conclude that the rectifier has a tiny crack and may need to be replaced. The mech even advise me not to change first because the volt seems to be reading fine... asked me to go straight there when the volt reading is unstable again. Two thumbs up for their service!:thumb::thumb:

Guys, i want to ask regarding the fuel tank. For GSR400 the fuel tank is 16L rite? For me when the fuel indicator reach the last bar and start blinking, i will go and top up. But I manage only to top up 12.5L. Does that mean the 16L includes the reserve which is 4L?? How many KM more can I travel after left with 1 bar?? Hope you guys can help shed some light here....thks.

You need to have BOTH last bar and the petrol kiosk display (on top of the last bar) blinking. When that happens, you are on "reserve" mode

About 240-260 front and 240-260 rear w/o passenger... 280-300 rear w/ passenger. Depends on size and ambient temp.....
