speaking of hard disks, would ike to ask, how would the exterior cover for those 2.5" hard disk affect the inner stuffs?

Err...I'm not sure what you meant, but let me give it a shot.

The purpose of the exterior casing to which a 2.5" hard disk drive is encapsulated into, shields the delicate hard disk from being exposed to the outside elements, as well as exterior physical electrical phenomenon.

Or if you were trying to find out how it works within the casing, the 2.5" hard disk drive itself nicely plugs itself into a connector at the inside front panel. That connector is some sort of a USB interface** which converts signals from your ATA or SATA hard disk drive into USB** signals.

In general, this technology enables you to plug your hard drive into your computer, USB style, without fuss...

Pretty techie engineering stuff there.

** Firewire works the same way.

Is there a newbie Q&A section here? lol okay what I meant was, the exterior casing. Wha difference does it make buying cheap ones and better ones? from those you can get at $5-$10 till those $40 ?

I agree, this should be put up as a sticky...to date, we've got 3 posts relating to this already :)

Back to the question, this anecdote could be one of your deciding factor to get a cheap one compared to an expensive one:

ive owned a $10 one for roughly 2yrs and it has served me really well.

Here are others that pretty much spell out the price of the hard drive casings:

1. Some comes with cooling fins, some with cooling fans. Unless the hard drive is placed in a hot environment, it's not worth the extra money getting these type of casings.

2. Brand. If you like reputation, and wouldn't mind the extra $$, go ahead.

Even my China-brand $10 casing has and is still protecting my hard drive.

3. Incorporated technology: What does it come with? USB only, Firewire only? or both? Of course, the latter may mean a higher price tag on the hard drive casing.

4. Shop profiteering. Are they trying to chop you?

okay, I have imagined this up :p

Hope these answers your questions.
