I decided to buy this bike two years ago... in 2005 after reading some of the reviews and forums on other websites. SG bikes didn't have much then. I was one of the first few people using this bike. It was great then.

So this bike is almost 2 yrs plus or silghtly older. Now certain problems are starting to appear. I've tried to look for any answers on the threads but to no avail. So that's why i'm starting this post.

Ok the analog Pulsar 180 is a great economical bike. (now it is digital) If you learn to take care of it, there should not be a lot of problems until about two years. My current mileage : abt 34000km

There are some peculiar behaviour for my bike tho. When I first bought it, it always have some problem starting if my bike is under the hot sun for too long. I tried to ask my mechanic at S1 at Ubi to have a look at it but he can't figure out why. So my solution to the problem was to start it first for a while for a about a min or two, (or until it automatically turn off.) Then turn it off again. Then start it again after about 3 to 5 mins. If I can park under shade, then I have no problems starting it. Anyone can figure out the answer to this problem? The problem still exists.

What I've done for my Pulsar. My regular maintenance

1. Every 2500 - 5000 km - change engine oil.

2. Just changed my batteries at 30 000 km. (It was about to die)

3. Just changed the spark plugs at also about 30 000 km. (changed it once before to try to rectify my start up problem mentioned above)

4. Lubricate the chain, changed the tyres recently.

5. Clean/Change air filter

Ok so here are some of my problems.

1. "Hot start up" as mentioned. Cannot start when it is baked under the sun.

2. Very slow pick up nowadays. Adjusted the idle speed for the bike > no improvement. However, after sufficient warm up, the pick up is better. However it cannot match its 'brand new' days when I first bought it.

3. Choke lever very prone to getting stuck. Changed it just two months ago and now it is stuck again.

4. Gear transition not smooth. Sometimes there is a clicking/cracking sound before it manages to get into the right gear.

5. The front wheel and fork now even sometimes feel slightly wobbly at low speeds.

So what can I do to make things better? Anyone out there with suggestions? bajaj riders facing similar problems? Somebody in the bajaj forums mentioned something about changing some rubber diaphragm. What is that?

I'm thinking of doing these things. Hopefully it can improve some things. (If u disagree just reply ok?)

1. Change/Clean the air filter, to improve air intake so perhaps the pick-up will be better.

2. Service the carburetor to improve the air/fuel intake.

3. The usual engine oil change.

4. Change the chain and sprockets. (I have not changed them since it seemed fine and the chain can still be tightened. The chain guard really helps to keep it in fine shape) However, I have not seen the front sprockets. It may have be worn out.

Hopefully the above will help me with the slow-pick up and gear problems unless I missed anything out. Hoping to avoid doing an overhaul.

Anything to help me improve the wobbly fork? or the hot-start up problem?

(to some users who have asked for other cons. They include a lousy paint job for the bajaj. Easily scratched. U have to frequently wax it. Thinking of getting a paint job unless i sell it)

All in all, the bajaj pulsar is a good bike. Haven't heard much problems about the digital version. Its fuel intake I heard is even slightly better. In India, they have the 220cc version which the reviews cited that it is much better also. Thinking of buying that if they sell it in singapore. However top speed still lacks. Miss my Super 4 superb handling, feel, topspeed and very much less problems. (my super 4 stolen in JB that's why i bought the bajaj)

Ok sorry if this is a long post. Sorry and happy and safe riding people.

Ciao.

Orange bulb from UM is $2.50 + 7% gst about = $2.70 they charged me, i changed before.

Elf 15w50 i can get at $16 some more, at Mah Motorparts (as usual lol)

Should be changing to the $19 Maxima Extra 10w40 soon - 10w40 is so thin, i wonder what kind of damage would it do to my bike.. If i feel the "damage" i faster change back to the super-thick $6 10w50 Total SA one liao.

Recently, I changed my eo.

What i did was I bought a bottle of total eo at $6 buck and maxima extra 15w50 at $19 (the lady in the shop said that they increasing the price to $20).

I drain the old oil, put in total. Went for a few rounds near my place. drain the total eo and put in maxima extra.

This is kind of like doing an engine flush.

During that few rounds on the total eo, i can say the the eo is thick. gear change is very smooth. But the bike doesn't rev as well as when it is using maxima.

This, to me, kind of like indicate that the eo does not flow as well the the maxima eo. in short this is not going to be good on the engine in the long run.

According to my understanding, eo that flow well at the required viscosity is better. So lets see, both maxima extra and total eo that i bought have a viscosity of 15w50, but maxima flows better (based on the feedback from my bike).

This is extemely important during the startup of the bike after a prolonged rest (over the night, especially on a cold morning). A good eo will reach the engine parts faster (this is where flow rate is important), thus providing the necessary protection.

Bike manufacturers don't recommend an eo viscosity for our bikes for fun. So it is best that we stick to wat bajaj recommends ( check ur manual for the viscosity of eo for ur bike).

Maxima might not be the only eo that can flow fast. I have not tried other eo so i cannot do a comparison. Maybe those who have tried other brands can chip in and provide some information.

In india they are mostly recommending castrol power1 10w40 for the UG2 and earlier versions. It is cheaper than maxima here.

Btw do anyone of ur know if there is any eo that is 10w50 or 5w50 or even 0w50. I might give them a try if there is any around.

p/s: Above is my limited knowledge on eo. Do correct me if i have any misconceptions.

1. Bajaj recommends changing eo at 2500km interval, universal recommends it is best to do it at 2000km. Your oil change interval seems abit stretched.

2. ( this is just my guess) when you let ur bike bake under the hot sun for too long your air supply in your air box might have leaned out (reduced amount of oxygen), and hot atmosphere usually has lower concentration of oxygen. that might affect your bike's idling if it is set too low. Coupled with old engine old (usually engine oil thickens as it age) ur bike will die off quite easily during idling.

Try to increase ur idling speed, change to fresh eo ( I recommend maxima, I am using that on my digital pulsar 180). And maybe get ur air/fuel mixture adjusted ( From factory the air/fuel screw is 2.5 turns out from fully screwed in).

3. You might want to go back to universal to check your fork problems.

4. Eo affects pickup too, ur gear should also feel smoother after changin eo.

anyway the UG2 which is the analog version's gear box is known to be like that. Quite rough when compared to honda's gear box.

5. My choke is not on the handle bar type, it is at the carb. I never use it. but I have tried pulling it. It is rough and kind of like very dirty, therefore cannot operate smoothly. Is your on the handlebar on ur clutch side handle?

Is u choke lever using the cable to actuate the choke, if it is, then u might want to lubicate the insides of the cable. At the carb area make sure it is clean ( u might need to get the carb's inside washed)

Hornestly ur bike has quite low mileage compared to mine. My pulsar is only slightly more then half a year old and i have already clock near to 30,000km

U might want to go to the pulsar thread and get opinions from those riding the UG2 version.

Have a nice day and hope u can resolve ur problems soon.

Hi Joajas,

I am thinking of using the TOTAL EO to do a engine flush too. I been changing engine oil every 500km for the last 1500km. I think I will flush it again at 2000 with Total EO. I thought of using it for500km then trying mobile 1 which has 5W50. I wonder will that be too thin? I finding the 20W50 I am using a little too thick for my liking.

Personally I like the 10W40 CASTROL as well. There is a bit more vibration but then the bike feel so much lighter than the 20W50 which I am currently using.

Recently, I changed my eo.

5w50 is definitely better than 20w50, but i am not sure about mobile1 as i never use before.

I only used mobil 4t, the mineral type, once during running, and it suck!!.

I had it changed out 2 days after using it.

Is mobil1 fully synthetic? must go research liao...

If you are riding UG3, 10w40 is not recommended. go for xxW50.

the xx is as low as u can get, but 50 is the weight recommended by bajaj, so best is to stick to that.

I dun think u need to flush so many times, flush is just to remove remaining dirty oil during eo change.

total is good for this purpose as it is real cheap.

changing eo every 500km is very good for the engine, as the oil in the engine pratically never gets old. but i think it is a bit too extreme also. with a good eo, u need only to change every 2000km.

Have u tried maxima 15w50.

It feels thin, engine is revvy and at the same time it provides the required eo viscosity. Mobil1 5w50 might be good too, maybe i will try that at next eo change, btw what's the price for mobil1?
