Hi Joajas,

Well. Coz I was told and recommended to do a 500km oil change for the 1st 2000km of my bike. Hence, I am still doing it as my bike is coming 1500km.

Mobile 1 price is $26 for 5W50 and it is Fully Synthetic. So I guess can give a try. I guess I am still holding on the a bottle of TOTAL EO 15W50 so I will use it on Friday for the DIY. Then I will either change to Maxima 15W50 or else will try Mobile 1. Though a bit Ex, but I thought can try try and see how is the riding experience for a 5W50.

I am using a UG3 so I guess I will try to stick to the XXw50. Though the 15W40 I tried is very smooth and light but there is a lot of vibration.

5w50 is definitely better than 20w50, but i am not sure about mobile1 as i never use before.

I only used mobil 4t, the mineral type, once during running, and it suck!!.

I had it changed out 2 days after using it.

Is mobil1 fully synthetic? must go research liao...

If you are riding UG3, 10w40 is not recommended. go for xxW50.

the xx is as low as u can get, but 50 is the weight recommended by bajaj, so best is to stick to that.

I dun think u need to flush so many times, flush is just to remove remaining dirty oil during eo change.

total is good for this purpose as it is real cheap.

changing eo every 500km is very good for the engine, as the oil in the engine pratically never gets old. but i think it is a bit too extreme also. with a good eo, u need only to change every 2000km.

Have u tried maxima 15w50.

It feels thin, engine is revvy and at the same time it provides the required eo viscosity. Mobil1 5w50 might be good too, maybe i will try that at next eo change, btw what's the price for mobil1?

This one I agree totally. but then using 20W50 u find the bike like got a lot of drag... Something seems to be pulling the bike if u try to accelerate

And I also notice my bike trying to move off also like a bit draggy too.. Hmm... Maybe when decelerate I can use EO brake since it is so thick.

I decided to buy this bike two years ago... in 2005 after reading some of the reviews and forums on other websites. SG bikes didn't have much then. I was one of the first few people using this bike. It was great then.

So this bike is almost 2 yrs plus or silghtly older. Now certain problems are starting to appear. I've tried to look for any answers on the threads but to no avail. So that's why i'm starting this post.

Ok the analog Pulsar 180 is a great economical bike. (now it is digital) If you learn to take care of it, there should not be a lot of problems until about two years. My current mileage : abt 34000km

There are some peculiar behaviour for my bike tho. When I first bought it, it always have some problem starting if my bike is under the hot sun for too long. I tried to ask my mechanic at S1 at Ubi to have a look at it but he can't figure out why. So my solution to the problem was to start it first for a while for a about a min or two, (or until it automatically turn off.) Then turn it off again. Then start it again after about 3 to 5 mins. If I can park under shade, then I have no problems starting it. Anyone can figure out the answer to this problem? The problem still exists.

What I've done for my Pulsar. My regular maintenance

1. Every 2500 - 5000 km - change engine oil.

2. Just changed my batteries at 30 000 km. (It was about to die)

3. Just changed the spark plugs at also about 30 000 km. (changed it once before to try to rectify my start up problem mentioned above)

4. Lubricate the chain, changed the tyres recently.

5. Clean/Change air filter

Ok so here are some of my problems.

1. "Hot start up" as mentioned. Cannot start when it is baked under the sun.

2. Very slow pick up nowadays. Adjusted the idle speed for the bike > no improvement. However, after sufficient warm up, the pick up is better. However it cannot match its 'brand new' days when I first bought it.

3. Choke lever very prone to getting stuck. Changed it just two months ago and now it is stuck again.

4. Gear transition not smooth. Sometimes there is a clicking/cracking sound before it manages to get into the right gear.

5. The front wheel and fork now even sometimes feel slightly wobbly at low speeds.

So what can I do to make things better? Anyone out there with suggestions? bajaj riders facing similar problems? Somebody in the bajaj forums mentioned something about changing some rubber diaphragm. What is that?

I'm thinking of doing these things. Hopefully it can improve some things. (If u disagree just reply ok?)

1. Change/Clean the air filter, to improve air intake so perhaps the pick-up will be better.

2. Service the carburetor to improve the air/fuel intake.

3. The usual engine oil change.

4. Change the chain and sprockets. (I have not changed them since it seemed fine and the chain can still be tightened. The chain guard really helps to keep it in fine shape) However, I have not seen the front sprockets. It may have be worn out.

Hopefully the above will help me with the slow-pick up and gear problems unless I missed anything out. Hoping to avoid doing an overhaul.

Anything to help me improve the wobbly fork? or the hot-start up problem?

(to some users who have asked for other cons. They include a lousy paint job for the bajaj. Easily scratched. U have to frequently wax it. Thinking of getting a paint job unless i sell it)

All in all, the bajaj pulsar is a good bike. Haven't heard much problems about the digital version. Its fuel intake I heard is even slightly better. In India, they have the 220cc version which the reviews cited that it is much better also. Thinking of buying that if they sell it in singapore. However top speed still lacks. Miss my Super 4 superb handling, feel, topspeed and very much less problems. (my super 4 stolen in JB that's why i bought the bajaj)

Ok sorry if this is a long post. Sorry and happy and safe riding people.

Ciao.

bro i changed the the air filter to K&N its got better acceleration,i'm having the same chain probs, silpage kinda thing, i'm using the new digital model, the speedo meter is terrible, changed it one, now its spoil again, i can only see the speed, the rest juz appear at certain times.

Bro, maybe u can read this.

might give u a better idea on EO. Didn't know u still running in :cheeky: .

During run-in, change at every 500 is a good thing. For me I switch to maxima when i hit 1500km during my run-in.

Pickup if no pillion is good. FC is good, considering my weight.

BTW Mobil1 is not pure synthetic. It is derived from dino oil. (Just for ur info)

On 10w40 maxima oil (I poured in without checking..) The feeling very light, and i encounter frequent clutch slip also, that is for no reason while cruising, the rpm suddenly shoot up and the bike like no power, have to clutch in and clutch out to rectify.

Our pulsars get hot very easily, so be aware that high heat shortens the EO's life.

Unlike big bikes where they are liquid cooled, pulsar is air cooled, so in heavy traffic conditions, it is not good for our engine. That's also why the same maxima 15w50 can hit mileage of 3000km to 4000km on liquid cooled bikes while we have to change at a much shorter interval.

OK. Thank you. Hmm.. I see.. OK.. BTW, what is DINO oil? Sounds like oil from dead dinosaurs?

Hmm.. OK.. So let's see if can get a bottle to try after 2000km? Hmm.. BTW, u start to wack ur PULSAR after 1500km?

Dino oil is crude oil, which is used to get mineral oil. Some claimed fully synthetic oil is actually highly purified mineral oil.

try not to whack one shot to WOT. gradually increase ur cruising speed.

Rev smoothly is better than suddenly whack open ur throttle.

if i am in a rush i can go at average 100km/h, if not usually i cruise at around 70 to 90. fastest i went is about 115km/h, bike starting to wobble due to my maxia box and e21 side box.

this bike not safe to do sudden maneuver at high speed, so not safe to go at high speed too often. Maybe i am still greenhorn when come to riding, but thats how i feel when i ride fast.

Yo Joajas n noleemeats...

Thanks for the reply. joajas... my mileage is already 34 000 km lah. (as much as your 30 000 km) :) okies. yah i know i'm overstretching the eo a bit... will try to be more consistent and change at 2000 to 2500 km. See if it helps.

The air/fuel mixture. Fully screwed in is if I turn it clockwise rite? So I should turn it anti-clockwise 2.5 times as according to the factory settings? Or Any other specific turns to make it a good air/fuel mixture for the pulsar?

And the Maxima eo, how much should it cost? I'm actually just using Esso EO synthetic. Is that good?

Noleemeats >> K & N air filter. Hmm will try to ask my mechanic to order so I can try it out. How much should it cost?

Thanks peeps.

Turn clockwise until cannot turn already (do screw in too tight), if the screw drops out it means u r are turning wrong direction. then turn opposite direction 2.5 full turns out, that is the factory setting, but that is not the best air/fuel mixture setting for ur bike. Get ur bike to the mechs and have it tuned according to ur bike's condition.

The air/fuel screw only determines ur air fuel mixture for idling. So dun expect to see improvement throught the rev range.

Maxima extra 15w50 cost $21 (dun noe whether they increase the price, they change eo for u) at MAH Motorparts at Dunlop Street. If ur buy eo home to change urself, should be $20 now (according to the lady at the counter.) Last time I bought is $19 (about 2 weeks ago), I change eo myself.

I used esso eo (mineral one) once during run-in. Sucks to the core, change it out after 2 days. Esso synthetic never try before so dun knoe about it.

K&N air filter will improve overall performance, BUT:

1. You have to change ur jet size, if not ur air/fuel mixture will get very lean (too much air, not enough fuel).

2. You must get ur bike carb tuned to make use of the extra advantage of K&N.

3. If ur bike is not properly set up, u might suffer poor fuel consumption (bikes start to drink more petrol). Or even worse, overall performance might be affected. Even though none of the guys are suffering from these possibilities, it is better that u r cautious. Check with the pulsar thread for more info on this.

4. Recently someone bought the K&N at less than $50, should be in the high $40s range.

Finally, if u want a total piece of mind, maybe u can head down to Universal's Bajaj Pulsar Workshop and ask the mechs there to diagnose ur problem for u. Then u can decide if u want to service any fault there, based on price of service quoted to u. Ask for their labour cost, usually they only tell u the parts cost.

They are very transparent in their dealings, just ask them to quote u everything, in advance. They only do bajaj pulsar bikes in that workshop so the mech are quite experience on pulsars in that sense.

Good luck..
