Dear Knights, most members here are new Class 2B licence holders. We, the Phantom Knights, would like to bring to your attention the latest news, incidents, traffic regulations & happenings in Singapore.

Our intention is to let new riders learn & understand the risks & responsibilities of a road user in Singapore. With a great machine in our hands, it brings great responsibility.

Our rides can be breath-taking, but it can also mean risk-taking.

I hope this Bulletin Board proves useful. I wish all riders a pleasant & safe ride.

If you have any useful or positive article, or any sponsor who wishes to benefit the PKs, please do not hesitate to PM me your article or product in detail.

Comments are also welcome.

Preparation before a bike trip

Start with a Good Machine.

Maintain your bike to the highest standard with good Tires, Brakes, Working Lights & a Solid Drive Train. At least you might not crash yourself!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wear Proper Motorcycle Attire.

Leathers and Boots take to Asphalt and Steel better than Knees and Ankles. No Nikes & Shorts for riding Please!!! Eye protection is always a good idea. Wear a *Helmet if conditions indicate, or if you are inexperienced.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember, You are on a Stealthy Vehicle.

NEVER assume another driver sees you, Period. Don't ride in the right rear quarter of the car in front, the Blind Spot... Always be prepared to evade disaster & don't get closed in by surrounding vehicles if possible. Tail Gating invites Road Rage.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watch Out for the other fellow!

Don't assume any driver has a brain and will observe Stop Signs, Traffic Laws or Your Right of Way . Some are talking on phones, reading papers and munching on snacks at 80mph. Ride Defensively, don't put your life in their hands.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scan the Road Ahead.

Learn to habitually scan the road for gravel, pot holes, road kill, ...whatever. This is an easy habit to develop. In a curve, shoot a quick glance at the farthest point and back through your line. Topping a hill, sweep the road ahead to the next one.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Know what is Behind You.

Use Your Mirrors! Generally, cars need more distance to stop than a motorcycle does so beware of making quick stops. Is your brake/stop light working?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watch for Vehicles Lane Swapping & Turning Left.

Abrupt Lane Changes & Left Turns Across Your Lane are a common cause of the worst car/bike accidents. Only your awareness and ability to react stand between you and tons of steel that swerve around you in traffic. Anticipate an Escape should you be cut off!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Know the Road's Surface.

If it looks slick, it probably is. Avoid the dark area (oil slick) down the center of lanes on roads and at busy intersections. Go SLOW entering Petroleum Pump Areas. Slick concrete and a little Oil... You'll hit the deck before you know you're sliding!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Simply SLOW DOWN!

Know when to tread lightly! Back it off for Intersections, Poor Weather and Heavy Traffic. Don't speed in Parking Lots, Commercial Areas or Neighbourhoods unless you're hungry for a Fender Buffet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ride Smart!

Keep a Sharp Mind on the Road. NEVER Ride while you're High! Even if you don't trash your bike and splatter yourself or someone else, DUI Laws and Substance Violations are Harsh Everywhere. It just Ain't Worth It so pitch a tent, get a room or call a Bro with a PU Truck if you party hard.

Be in the right frame of Mind

Be Alert

Stay Alert and be ware of your level of perception, judgment and coordination. Accidents occur when you make wrong judgements or cannot react in time to sudden traffic or road situations.

Expect the Unexpected

Be on the look out for sudden changes in road condition, even on familiar road, as diversions can spring up overnight. Travel at slow speed on unfamiliar road or during a heavy downpour and you’ll give yourself more reaction time for emergencies.

Speeding

Speed put you, your passengers and other road user at risk. When you speed, you have less time to react to emergencies. The ipact of a crash will also be greater, resulting in more serious damage or injuries.

Tips: Its not how fast you go, its how long you can stay on your bike.

Tailgating

It is dangerous to follow another car too closely because you’ll have a shorter reaction time if the cars in front stop suddenly.

Tips: Always keep a few car length away judge by the speed you are in, signal & overtake in safely. Need not to wait for them to give way to you as it will only delay your time& anger you if they don’t.

Road Hogging

Driving or Riding slowly can be dangerous, if you are in a lane meant for faster traffic. You force other traffic user behind you to overtake to avoid hitting you.

Tips: Follows the traffic flow, if you are driving or riding at speed limits keep yourself in the middle or left lane as you ain’t that fast.

Overtaking with signalling

It is only courteous to turn the signal on to show your intention t0o turn, change lanes or stop. It also gives ample time to react to your action and not have to brake suddenly.

Tips: It don’t mean if you signal vehicles will give way to you or you have your way of right. Always check your mirror & blind spot before lane change.

Poor lane discipline

Zig Zagging through traffic to overtake vehicles, forcing other to give way, is rude and unsafe road act.

Tips: If you enjoy it, try playing it on track or on game console.

Multi Tasking

Give your full attention on the road, making phone calls, sms, chatting with pillion lets you loss focus. If needed, turn on your hazard light to stop at the side or turn in petrol station or car park.

Tips: You don’t own the road so be considerate and don’t stop at the side of the main road.

Ignoring pedestrians and cyclists

Just because you are in 4 wheels or 2 wheel motor power vehicles does not mean you can bully smaller cc, cyclist or pedestrians. Road courtesy should be apply to all in general.

Tips: Understand that some people take it for granted but you hit them, you are in deep trouble.

NOTE: According to the traffic regulation, cyclist are suppose to used the extreme left lane of the road (side). Do be nice & give way to them.

Case

My brother met with a traffic accident on May 2005. He was the pillion rider on his friend's motorcycle . They turned right on seeing the green arrow light up, when a car moving forward from the opposite lane hit them.

As a result, he has a cracked vertebrae and was bed-ridden for more than two months. He was a technician, and as a result of his injuries, the doctor has advised him that he is not suitable to continue in this line of work.

We've engaged a law firm to pursue this matter, and also sent a letter to the third party's insurance company for claims on medical bills, loss of earnings and future medical treatment. However, the third party does not agree that they should bear full responsibility for the accident. They are waiting for the police report to be issued before deciding on the compensation.

I was informed that the police are waiting for witnesses to step forward to provide information before the police report can be issued.

My questions are :

1. What will happen to my case if there are no witness willing to step forward? Will a police report be issued?

2. What are my avenues in seeking compensation from the third party?

Answer:

It appears that the Traffic Police (TP) has not concluded their investigations. The fact that your brother was the pillion rider is indicative that he is entitled to 100% of his claim. Ideally if your brother is not sure as to who is more negligent, he would want to commence an action against both the motorcyclist and the car driver.

Please ensure that you commence an action in court before the expiration of 3 yrs from the date of the accident, as otherwise your brother's action will be time barred.

I understand that there are issues circulating within the PK forum with regards to the meeting up with the PK CM.

Here is what I would like to clarify.

We have the name list of the 7 potential PK members who had volunteered themselves as CM to assist event and gathering planning in PK.

A CM will assist & organize activities within Phantom Knights. As so member are able to enjoy event like

1) Local Joy rides,

2) Malaysia Riding,

3) Oversea Rides & holiday,

Those who have any opinion & feedback, please do PM me.

It will be kept private & confidential unless some joker hatch my SBF Mail Box. Wahahaha
