Well this is the cute part. My friend has a Diploma in Engineering but told the HR lady that her Diploma is kinda outdated and didn't want to go for the job. The HR lady kept bugging my friend to go for an interview. So my friend finally went for the interview. At the interview, the following occured:

 

1) My friend was told $2k was too high.

 

2) Was told looking for someone with a car

 

3) Was told HR Lady did not like ex-Civil Servants because they are selfish and only do their own work. My friend is ex-Navy.

 

4) Was told that the company is new and need total commitment. When jobs are tasked, cannot expect people to help. *My friend was like, don't like civil servants cos they are selfish but I don't get help on the job?*

 

5) HR doesn't know what my friend's Diploma can do nor what my friend's previous expertise in the Navy is relevant to.

ouh....fresh degree grad...given the current market...2.5k for a fresh degree grad shouldnt be an issue but HR would usually comment "ure salary too high, in addition no experience"...hopefully it turns out for the best...

 

jus came back from meeting the HR. she said cos it's considered a not for profit organisation, so 2.5k is definitely out. so i suggested 2.3k and she didn't say anything. said will get back to me latest by monday. well, i think the chances are there.

 

but there's no 13month bonus, only performance bonus (was told maybe up till 2-3months of pay) depending on how the sch is performing. they are growing steadily and with more people, even from overseas furthering their studies in singapore, well, i think that shouldn't be a worry for me?

 

after confirmation, will get adjusted by 5-10%, afterwhich, adjustment will be based on superior appraisal. but she didn't say by how much. assuming that it's still 5-10%, that would means an increase of 100-200 per year? is this the norm or what? does sounds a bit less to me.

so wad industry are you interested in? i have some close friends from sec sch who took diploma in IT back then. they end up doing sales, admin work and 1 even furthering his studies in sport science. none of them even tried working in IT, so don't sigh!

so it seems like a new sme company? contradictory to wad PM Lee just said in the rally, most sme fail becos locals are not willing to put in effort to work in sme (or something along this line), but the truth is that sme will squeeze and exploit the last drop out of their employees. they wan to give low pay, expect high productivity and u selling ur soul and body to them (aka they will be happy if u can work 24/7) pretty much confirmed with point 4.

 

regards to point 2, require/preferably someone with car, so most likely will be running all over the place to meet client. high chances it is a sales engineering job. so that might also explain point 1, why the basic of 2k is too high?

 

point 3 - your friend should say he will not be working directly alongside her, so whether civil servants are selfish or not, also don't really concern her.

 

point 4 - i dont expect people to help me do my job, but i require guidance and sharing of knowledge is power!

 

point 5 - actually not only applicable to your friend, but what i feel is that every job has its own SOP. even if you are from the same line but different coy, you also need time to adjust. and wad we learn in studies might be outdated or not practical to the actually job? that why they say learning never stop... gotta learn while on the job also.

 

i know it's easier to type it out now compared to when one was actually sitting there for the interview. after my interviews, my mind will always go "aiya, should have ans this question this way earlier instead of saying that". but then again, based on what you shared, it's quite meaningless to work in that type of organisation. they are not established nor stable enough and you never know when they will go bankrupt and owe u 2-3 months of pay. happened to my bro who went to work in a sme after leaving the air force.

I am so tired of showering my care and concen for him... He claim that is also stuggling to get this clear between us but still... I dont know wat to do.. i know no point hanging on it as there will not be positive outcome but cant he just follow his heart. If u feel for someone than say la.. or do wat u need to do... why must u be stubborn also.. follow ur mind tell u cannot do this and that...

 

School is starting today.. and i will be seeing him too.. seriously i dont know how to carry on like this.. maybe like wat he say he really need sometime to clear things off.. but does avoiding help to fade the feeeling away?

 

Yes i cant accept the fact that he is trying to be close with some other ppl, I do get jealou whenever the phone ring. Maybe i am just being sensetive over it.. but i know sometime soon it will happen because i am no longer the gf now...

 

Now i am so lost i dont know how to pick myself up, i know i shouldnt carry on this because it will not do good to both of us.. but still i dunno where and how to start a new beginning.. I just hate being into a r/s because there is no secure in it, end of the day either party will get hurt, whether u r marry or not marry.

well. i've been around and i can safely say alot of HR personnel knows jacksh!t about HR and interviewing.

 

no skills, no attitude, no mercy.

 

if the HR gives you a load of bullcrap, i suggest you re consider the offer. afterall if the HR is so incompetent to judge or make pre assumptions about you, what would top management be like? the company culture?

 

The important thing in looking for jobs is to not give up, i looked for 4 months before securing a job. and i know how alot of you guys feel. like nothing productive has been achieved and you just take up any job that comes along with any terms and condition.

 

the job market is pretty crap now as well, sales job generally. even though i am in sales line.

 

bottomline, stay motivated and keep sending those resumes, things will turn out fine in their own way.

 

if still no hope, pm me, i hire you. lol.

I absolutely second that. Another failure of SME is that they are spoilt for choice with cheaper FTs, no quality nevermind, cheap can already.

that will most likely able to hire onli 5person.

most important deadline comes , i wack the whole lot if they are unable to produce.

well to those who are contemplating between 2 job offers.

that means, having a certified confirmed job offer now is much better than a prospective interview in the future.

 

i also faced this dilemma as well, 1 company offered me the job already although i had no interest in that line, the other company's interview is on the same week as job offer day.

 

so i took up the job offer and went for the interview at teh same time. turns out i failed the interview eventually.

 

right now, things turned out better than i expected, adjusted to the job.

 

but no matter what, do what you feel is right. that way, you feel no regrets from anything should things turn out the bad way, because you listened to yourself.

I did wonder whether there would be a car allowance on top of the basic pay but I didn't want to clarify too much with my friend because she has a habit of going seriously off tangent sometimes.

The way my friend put it across, it sounded more like HR wasn't sure what kind of qualifications / skills they need for the job offered. Not sure how's the recruitment process out there since I've only ever had one full time job so far. Edited September 1, 2010 by Silverelf
