Question time again brothers. And of cos oren sister if u know the answer to it. ;)

My friend who has just gotten his student pass last week. Is now in indo getting his bike license. Is it possible for him to buy a bike and ride for a year if he fails to convert his license to a singapore one? Means hes still holding onto an indo license.

There's this rule that if u are a foreigner carrying foreign driving license. U can drive in singapore for up to a year without the need of converting ur license. Don't know whether this goes for bike not.

Help me if u know the answer please pros!

Here's your answer:

A foreigner above 18 years of age and holding a Work Pass/Dependent Pass/Student Pass may drive in Singapore with a valid class 3, 3A or 2B foreign licence, for a period of not more than 12 months. A Singapore driving licence is required after 12 months. Those on short term social visit may drive with their foreign licence for up to 12 months each time they enter into Singapore. For licence not written in English language, an International Driving Permit or translation is required as explained below.

More here on conversion of licenses: http://driving-in-singapore.spf.gov.sg/services/driving_in_singapore/information_drivinglicence_conversion.htm

Now, he must check before hand that his motorcycle license can be equivalent to a class2B so allows for up to 200cc motorcycles.

besides what O'ren said...

need to get insurance and must add as sub rider for the bike...

in singapore if your name is not added in the insurance you cannot ride the bike...

different from cars where you can just drive even if your name is not in the insurance policy...

anyone wants to be the 1st few in singapore to try out the rear disc brake assembly for pulsar?

i am still considering...

abit tight on Vit M this month...

here is some info on the conversion

the rear disc assembly is custom built.

2 types(both need to mod): 1) need to mod the rim for the assembly to thread in like a screw. 2) mod to accomedate 4 bolts to bolt in the assembly.

Proposed two sets:

1st set will contain adapter + rear disc only, like in the picture:

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2416538855756&set=a.2336543615925.138278.1319894597&type=1

You can choose between a standard round disc (like yamaha spark), or patterned disc (like mine). The cost for this package is 300 thousands IDR before shipping.

2nd set will contain complete package of adapter + rear disc + caliper + holder + master + brake cable + strut bar as shown here:

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2336543615925.138278.1319894597&saved

This package cost: 700 thousands IDR before shipping.

What kind of modifications needed for each set?

1. Both set need drilling in the inside drum of rear rim to bolt the adapter.

2. The first set will require you to buy caliper, holder, master, cable and strut bar by yourself

3. Both set will need some modification on the rear brake lever to attach to the master, as shown here:

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2416531815580&set=a.2336543615925.138278.1319894597&type=1

(look at the bottom of master brake kit where it connect to the lever)

The work will be done by a week after you order placed.

Hmmm. So if he want to buy a let's say 2nd hand CBR150. Can he just do the transfer and insurance by himself? Or does he need to put me as first rider and he himself for 2nd rider for the insurance? Can do at any bike shop?

Thanks oren too btw. :)

- Pulsar is inexistent in Thailand. So people won't bother with the bike unless you have fancy rims and stuff on it.

Thats the 1st time heard someone use the work In-existent. I always thought the word to use is "Non-existent". But as you are a journalist you cant be wrong. The word actually exists. lol. Just spamming on a boring sunday afternoon.

And "inexistence" predates "nonexistence" by 23 years -- 1623 vs. 1646.

People immediately saw the need for improvement. 23 years would be

"immediate" by the standards of the time - for this sort of thing

Contributing to the spam - google is the best thing to happen to mankind :p

Hi Manik,

This was a real concern for me before the trip. I can now say that except Malaysia, all other countries are very safe. ....... I guess someone has to try it first..:)

Thanks for the detailed response. Basic and useful tips. Good to know that other countries (Thailand) are a wee bit safer...I am planning a Singapore-Penang-HatYai-Phuket-back route in December. I heard some crazy stories about people carrying chains weighing 10 kgs to chain their bike, so I'm not gonna do that.

I'm not a journalist! And non existent. "Inexistant" is a French word. I sometimes make these mistakes when words in French and English are close, I sort of englishize the French word :/ sorry!

Yeah, I bought such chain. Then when we were packing, and lifted it by itself, we both had a nervous laugh and said "ok, yeah, no." and it's sitting in my storage room now.

Now, the itinerary you're going to do ispretty popular with Malaysians and Singaporeans riders, so just as Police knows it, thieves do too.

For example, us in Thailand we never got checked or arrested by the police or asked for insurance. Singaporean riders who go to hatyai always report being stopped. Phuket should be good as long as you wear your helmet at all times.

Coming back to theft, just a wire and a good strong lock that's not flimsy will do the trick. The wire I bought on jalan Besar, I ran it inside a plastic tube and asked the hardware shop to bend the extremities into a loop and tighten it with a metal ring. Wrapped some tape on it and heat shrink tube and it works like a charm. It's very light and easy to attach on my saddle bags.

Are you stopping in KL or riding all the way to Penang? Any stops between Penang and Hatyai?

This is the plan for the group that I am going with. I am thinking of starting a bit earlier and adding in a Penang stopover since I love the Penang bridge too much. They don't plan any stops all the way before Hatyai.

29.Dec.2011 .. set off from GP to Hatyai

30.Dec.2011 .. set off from Hatyai to Phuket

31.Dec.2011 .. Tour Phuket and Celebrate New Year Eve

1.Jan.2012 .. Sleep late late

2.Jan.2012 .. Set of from Phiket to Hatyai

I see.. Make sure you're comfortable clocking 450-500km per day. If I'm not mistaken, you are used to riding long journeys, but just in case, have a thought about it. After MY the roads will not allow for 120-140km/h speeds, with the traffic, the slow trucks and the bends so it might take more time to ride the distance.

I advise not to ride at night, even in MY and definitely not in Thailand and Phuket. Also make sure you know the pace and rhythm of your group, and if not, go with them for a day trip somewhere.

You're gonna love it for sure so all this blabla of mine is to help cover the safety stuff, because I'm sure the trip enjoyment and awesome feelings while riding will make it a great one :)

I'm in but got a few questions:

- what brand and model exactly will be each of the parts in package 2?

- can UM fix the kit once made and shipped?

- how much is shipping ?

- does it affect in anyway the riding or the wheel/suspension functions to drill at the drum?

- are we removing or keeping the drum pads?

I'm in but got a few questions:

- what brand and model exactly will be each of the parts in package 2?

- can UM fix the kit once made and shipped?

- how much is shipping ?

- does it affect in anyway the riding or the wheel/suspension functions to drill at the drum?

- are we removing or keeping the drum pads?

will check out more details...

shipping not known until item is done

UM side need to check 1st...

will print out the pics and let ah tek see if its possible...
