Hi all

I was browsing on the Yamaha star motorcycles website (http://www.starmotorcycles.com/) and was impressed by the video and the bikes of course. I was wondering why they are not popular in our country when the machine can perform better and much more cost efficient compare to Harley. They are mostly on well-engineered V4 smooth and reliable engine and lighter in weight.

Please comments. Many thanks.

I will be dropping by at the Yamaha showroom to find out more details. Cheers.

i guess thats the power of branding. Harley is a famous American icon. from pop culture, movies, music, Harley has always been potrayed as the badd ass in cruisers.

i think apart from the world renowned brand, the bike is also well known for its unique sound, rigid construction, advanced technology and a great history.

hence despite the hefty price, people would still go for it. its a total package. and well preferences too. :)

anyway fellow Dragstar riders, i've this problem thats bugging me. recently there seems to be a 'click click' sound coming from my draggie rear wheel. its not the tires but i think it has something to do with the rim/ spoke. everytime the wheel goes into one revolution, there would be a 'click' sound. faster as the bike picks up speed. any light on this?

Hi hi...Ande02...I have to agree with your comparisons on the cost efficiency, weight, engineering and reliablity....Maybe a little bit on our mtorcycling scene here bro, almost every biker would consider seriously on the cost of the bikes, insurance costs, road tax costs and installment packages...It all depends on whether it fit into their financial capabilities too bro...

If you have more than enough, get a harley but if not, most would settle for a much lesser cost bike with everything else in rounded up in an affordable package that won't eat into their monthly expenses...

Yes, Yamaha isn't the only one that has awesome looking and great performance machines but you also have to consider on the specifications that our Government has set for any bikes to imported into our country...Simple example, YAMAHA ROADLINER, what you'll see at Hong Leong would be the European Version of the MidnightStar but if you go into the USA website, you'll find that there's another model called Midnight but in the Roadliner section and i've enquired from Hong Leong themselves, and they've mentioned that the specifications does not meet to our country's requirements...SPECS ARE DIFFERENT bro...and the same goes to the latest YAMAHA RAIDER...

Other than that, check out Kawasaki Mean Streak...It's one awesome looking machine but SPECS ARE DIFFERENT bro...get what i'm saying???....

If you are really into the Star bikes, there's one MidnightStar 1900cc, silver, that's at Hong Leong and it's up for grabs coz they only imported 2x of that model from Europe (Black x1 & Silverx1)...The black was sold and i guess, you should be getting the silver, huh???....

So, good luck to your queries but don;t miss the opportunity to own that awesome machine bro, belt final drive, pushrods, oevrhead lifters, air-cooled and superbly smooth in acceleration plus it's only for a mere S$27K++... Go figure bro...Cheers and hope to see you on your new MIDNIGHTSTAR...

Hi hi...Lovebelow...Sounds like you've been a loyal Harley follower or you are a Harley owner yourself...But the truth is, Yes!, Harley-Davidson has taken some pains and effort to market out their brand and machine and are still trying to improve on the quality of their bikes, accessories and apparels...

As mentioned, it all boils down to how big is the bank account and how deep the pocket...If you are in any parts of the USA, for a Sportster 883 Hugger, you can get it easily for a mere US$5-6K and from there you can upgrade to the Big Twins....But in Singapore, it costs slightly more than half of that due to the importation & freight charges & so forth...So, all in all, if you have the $$$$$$, get yourself your dreambike - a Harley...But if don't have the $$$$$$, it's not a shameful thing to settle for something else....

I guess this issue has been a long time favourite for all bikers but what matters exactly to all riders worldwide is how the bike can get you from point A to point B....The rest is still about the $$$$$$$.....

So, let's forget about the Advance Technology, Unique Sound, Rigid Construction, etc. etc....Let's just admit that it is all about the $$$$$$...

Cheers bro....

Bearings huh? Hmm sounds like not a good thing at all. I heard that loose or faulty bearings are dangerous as the heavy rear of a cruiser might give way in the event of hard knocks.

Haha i'm not riding a Harley bro. Just a Yamaha. But i greatly admire their bikes. Anyway i did my thesis on Harley Davidson. Talking about taking your passion wherever you go. LOL

Anyway, you're right there man. Things are so ex here that one might as well get a car than a Road King. It's so much cheaper in the US and we all know why. Probably its not the machine price that's ex here in Singapore. But probably the insurance and taxes cos i heard its unlike the typical big bikes. In addition servicing and stuff. Oh well i do hope that there would be a dedicated platform for cruisers apart from Harley here in our lil island.

Hi hi...Lovebelow...It is not a good thing when your bearings starts to wear off especially when it starts to compose a musical whenever you move....And yes, it would be wise to have it checked and replaced immediately due to safety reasons....

Hi hi...Lovebelow...I've been dwelling the the motorcycle industry for a short while ago, as you say 'Taking Your Passion Wherever You Go', and what i noticed is that the Metric Cruisers Dealership aren't getting the enough response and support from the Public for them to start importing the different range of Metric Cruisers...

Lets try to make sense out of this scenario ya...I've work in the Harley Dealership before, it's American made, all American production, none of it is so-called European model whatsoever and it's approved for importation here...

Next is the Yamaha RoadStar 1700cc...Same thing, it's all American made but all you hear is "Specs Are Different", that's why is not approved to be imported here...Can you spot the difference????....

I've gotten that sound before when I didn't lube my chain for 1,000,000 years. Then I lubed it and it was gone.

It mite be ur shaft, maybe. worn out shaft.

Or maybe one of ur wheel spokes is loose?

Hi hi...GohJohan...I guess you've misunderstood what i was trying to say my good friend...and also, just a quick typo for me, it's YAMAHA ROADSTAR 1600cc...and yes my good friend, Do go over to Hong Leong and ask Mr. Lee, he'll tell you that the specifications is different and that's why Hong Leong can't import it in unless it's a European model...RoadStar don't have a European Model bro....

By the way, what's with the "No Cheaper Replacement for a Fat Boy???"

Hi hi...Lovebelow...Good thinking and very highly recommended that you do just that coz it's better to get it checked rather than just assuming bro...Cheers....

I sat on the Roadstar 1600 last year when I was in Brisbane. The minute I got onto the bike, straddled on it, gripped the handlebar grips, felt the steering and I thought

"Doesn't the feel of the bike seems familiar?"
