The Silent Sermon

A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the pastor decided to visit him. It was a chilly evening. The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire.

Guessing the reason for his pastor's visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited. The pastor made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone then he sat back in his chair, still silent..

The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember's flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead. Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting.

The pastor glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it. As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running down his cheek, 'Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon. I will be back in church next Sunday'. We live in a world today, which tries to say too much with too little. Consequently, few listen.

Sometimes the best sermons are the ones left unspoken. What is most valuable is not WHAT we have in our lives, but WHO we have in our lives.

And the WHO is definately not Jack Neo or Li nan xing

Jack and his wife Irene were not Christians when they tied the knot. They only became Christians very, very recently -- less than a year to be precise. His affair with that 22-year old model started about 2 years ago, and all his other misdeeds were done before he came to know Christ. But the moment he became a Christian and the Holy Spirit indwelled him, he began to realise that it was not right for him to continue with the relationship, and it was only a matter of time before he knew that he had to break off with that girl. The Holy Spirit convicts the believer that his body is God's temple and not to defile it.

I watched the press conference and give my whole-hearted support for what he and Irene did. They are considered one-flesh in the eyes of God, and their appearance together as a unit reflected that truth. It was especially not easy for her to appear before the press and she fainted as a result. But it took lots of courage on their part, and because they honour God, God will honour them. Yes, the world may mock and scorn them and say that everything was staged, but God knows the sincerity of their hearts and will definitely cause something good to come out of all this.

So are all men pigs that are prone to stray? My honest answer to that is yes. Even the most decent-looking and family-oriented person like Jack Neo did. And especially so if the man is in a position of power or influence. Such a man has a tendency to think too highly of himself and his boundaries or out-of-bound markers start to become fuzzy. What makes it worse is there are women out there who are attracted to men of status.

The problem with many marriages breaking down is due to expectations not being fulfilled. The husband has certain expectations of his wife and if she does not meet them, the evil one will start putting thoughts in his head about this other woman who is "better" than his wife. Similarly, the wife has certain expectations of her husband and if he does not meet them, the devil will likewise put thoughts in her head that perhaps there is this other guy who is more thoughtful than her husband.

So what is the solution?

We need a third party for a marriage to work -- and His name is Jesus. Ecc 4:12 tells us that "a threefold cord is not easily broken". Rather than placing expectations upon each other, both husband and wife should instead depend on Jesus to fulfill their needs. He is more than able to do so. And the sweet irony is that as we look to Him for fulfillment and draw nearer to Him, we actually end up drawing nearer to our spouse!

Meanwhile, let's keep Jack and Irene and their 4 children in prayer. Many of the J Team staff and crew are not yet believers, and I believe God is able to supernaturally restore their marriage (now that both of them are Christians) and through their testimony lead others to Him as well.

Yes, and as brother Eddy has pointed out from the Bible, is it not human that we put our trust on, but He who is God that became a man for us. His name is Jesus.

So can I confirm that Jack's sins were committed before he became a christian? If so then I would really want to point it out to my close friends, many of us were talking about Jack neo and when they knew he was a christian.....well they kinda looked at me and see he's a christian and he did all these.

However if he was sinful before he became a christian so we're saying he is forgivable now after accepting the Lord?

It doesn't matter if he committed it pre or post conversion. What matter most is what God said and our views should be in line with Him. Bringing up this topic again and again with reference to this individual is nothing but gossip and passing judgment.

When we try to reason with unbelievers on things basing on our own knowledge, we have no 'anchor' or 'strong points'. When our friends question us about all these 'sinful' act, it is our chance to point to them the goodness of our living God (that leads sinful ppl like us to repentance).

The Bible says whatever that is not of faith is sin, that is how God the Judge sees it and the final verdict is death in accordance with the Law. Jesus says I come so that you may have life and have it more abundantly. It is not for us to say that Jack is forgivable or not, God already said it that his lawless deeds He remember no more. This God says to those who accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour, which means in everything they do or think or breathe or live by, it is solely trusting on Jesus and His finished work. Anything else is pure legalism and self-righteousness and making nothing of Jesus' redemptive work. This we should seize the opportunity to point people to Jesus and that includes Jack.

The Law points you to your sins, Jesus points you to His love for you.

Christians wil stil fail... dats y Mord likes to post ugly stories abt pastors, christians brothers etc....

I once heard something veri gud.. its says dat every fresh day, a ture believer makes a conscious decision to do d walk wif Jesus....

if any pre-believer asks abt Jack Neo being a Christian and still sins..

I wld ask him wats most important question ...whether a Chrisitian stil sin? Or whether Jesus is true GOD ?

We r not to judge whether Jack or NanXing are true Chrisitans.... but shd instead bring d dying or dead ember back into d fire n light,

Rite, Mord ? :) So when wil u bring me to church?

give grace where grace is due bro. Whatever ppl learn or teach, the fruit will be borned. It is not for us to say the church that preaches pure grace has no flaws, neither is it for us to say that the one that preaches grace and law is flawed. All look to Jesus, and should look to Him alone.

sometimes a moment of silence is enough to show a glimpse of hope. the dying and dead ember knows where the energy source is, they will know when to return. Our walk shld be to stay focus on Jesus alone, and let Him do His job (and that includes using us a channel/vessel), not trying to be Jesus and spread our mis-guided thoughts or interpretation of the Gospel. We become a light to the lost when Jesus works through us, not when we try to tell Jesus what we can do for Him.

well, bro ... i was from a "law church" for more than a decade, juz sharing my tots and opinion

Rom 7:8 But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.

That period of time in the "law church" was the "dark ages" for me :dozed:

i know where you are coming from. but from the above reply alone is judgment by itself, and whatever measure we use to judge others, same measure will be upon us. Judging others is sin as well. We are to discern, not judge. All of us fall short of God's requirement, and all go through the ONE who can redeem us back.

i beg to differ in this :

Does Matthew 7:1 Mean No Judging at All?

Matt 7:1 DO NOT judge {and} criticize {and} condemn others, so that you may not be judged {and} criticized {and} condemned yourselves.

The term judge is used in more than one sense, but Christ's meaning is plain.

1) He does not prohibit the civil judgment of the courts upon evil doers, for this is approved throughout the whole Bible.

2) He does not prohibit the judgment of the church, through its officers, upon those who walk disorderly, for both he and the apostles have enjoined this.

3) He does not forbid those private judgments that we are compelled to form the wrong-doers, for he himself tell us that we are to judge men by their fruits. (See Mt 7:15-20.) What he designs to prohibit is rash, uncharitable judgments, a fault-finding spirit, a disposition to condemn without examination of charges.

Shalom,

yes, free choice is always there.

However, if you let Grace sink into the heart ... we can choose to be more like our God; having the attributes of:

a) grace

b) truth

John 1:17b (New King James Version)

..... grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Paul's struggle is mixing Grace with the Law, remember Paul was a super Pharisee.

Rom 7 about his struggle with Grace + Law.

Rom 8 begins with the SOLUTION; which is Grace-personified – that is Jesus Himself.

Rom 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Then we can be sin-less .... not "sinless" hor :)

Shalom.

There is a difference between Discernment and Judging.

from the above alone is quoting verses out of context. Judging is a word used often but carries different meaning in the flow of the context. We are to read the entirety of the chapter to know how the meaning flows. If the above case is true, then it contradict Romans 14 as well as many other verses in the Bible.

Again, there is a difference between Judgment and Discernment.

Romans 11:29 For the gifts and the calling of God is irrevocable.
