Hello all,

My apologies for no updates.

A few events clashed with this event (my son having head shaved as well as circumsicion).

For those in the list, please check your PMs. I have provided updates.

Again, my sincere apologies.

*UPDATE*

A news piece update on the Malay papers:

http://cyberita.asia1.com.sg/singapura/story/0,3617,126388,00.html?

I don't have time to translate but the summary is that through various private donations, they have managed to raise $80000, enough for the operation and initial equipment needed. Thus a lifeline for the boy.

Unforunately, the $80000 is not inclusive of our donation drive yet. The money is still with me as I have not finished collecting from a few donors.

We will still be donating this money to the family as the medical equipment the boy will be receiving will incurring ongoing maintenance costs. Also, it will serve up as a small Hari Raya gift for the family.

The last person I will collect from will be on the 18th as he is returning from US and will only be able to pass the cash then. After which I will arrange for the handover of the cash to the family (with pics) and sign off from the family.

I will try my best to arrange for a Thank You e-card with the family's signature for each donor.

Stay tuned for more updates.

*Update*

Heyos, everyone.

My sincere apologies for no updates.

Hari Raya fever got to me la.

I managed to visit the family on the Saturday before Hari Raya and handed the donations over. On the 4th day of Hari Raya also, my wife, son and me visited the family.

My son seem to have a good time with him:

http://www.picturesky.com/albums/userpics/10975/normal_IMG_0014.JPG

I chose these pictures becoz it seemed my son connected with Raiyan (sharing the same name and all) and were like immediately talking to each other, something very rare as it would take some time for my son to adapt to strangers and start 'chatting'.

More pics are here but you might need a Multiply account to view:

The family are very thankful and grateful for the money we have managed to collect for Raiyan's medical needs.

Even though I felt and shared with her that we could not raise much more, she said it is a boon and what seem small to us will help them go a very long way in looking after Raiyan.

She shared with a sad story.

When the need to raise funds for Raiyan's condition arose, the family approached all the various welfare and social services for assistance, including, sadly enough, several Malay organizations.

All either never returned their calls or kind of filed away their pleas.

Only when the aunt gave the interview for the first article in the Malay papers then suddenly all such social services and organizations contacted her and offering their 'utmost' assistance.

Kinda sad.

But its heartening to know that there are Singaporeans of all races who helped chipped in to help Raiyan. That includes us SBFers who helped donated and, for that, the family gave their unreserved thanks to everyone who helped and supported this drive.

Another sad story was some other local forums that were putting in effort to help this unfortunate kid had some very heartless comments.

According to the aunt, a few comment was made in a similar thread in HardWareZone whereby it was suggested that the family should let the kid die if its a major burden.

Thus proof of the level of immaturity in there and the reason I don't hang out there.

All I can say is, if such a similar thing ever happens to them or their family, may God have mercy on them coz I know I won't give them any....

She has gone on newspaper to clarify that they have collected enough donations (inlcuding ours) for the operation but that the operation date has been pushed to another 3-6 months time due to getting the medical device to be approved by HSA.

Essentially, the doctor has shared that they will be surgically inserting a nerve stimulation device that will sort of amplify the nerve signals to tell the heart to pump as normal, as opposed to the current situation where the nerve connectors are damaged.

As a total, we managed to collect $1100, as listed in the first post.

I have already handed over the money in the form of cash to the family.

If you wish to contact the family for verification, wish to see Raiyan for yourself or wish to make another personal donation (God bless your soul), you can contact the mother at 84005246.

Or you can PM me for the address.

I would prefer not to reveal the address here in fear of attracting the wrong attention to them

I can say however that they are staying in the Jurong West area.

Again, on behalf of Raiyan and family, I would like to thank everyone who had supported and helped in this donation drive.

Thank you.

Hi, everyone.

This morning I just received news sent to my wife via SMS from the aunt.

At around 3:00am in the morning, a brain scan by the doctor & hospital revealed that the brain is no longer receiving blood flow.

The doctor has certified Raiyan to be effectively brain-dead.

The family has made the very sad decision to take him off life-support as of 6am this morning.

Original SMS from the aunt. Apologies for the misspells as she tends to keep her messages brief:

Salam all. Te brainscan today shows tat thre's no more blood flow in md raiyan shafiq's brain. Te doc said he's already gne. We decide to stop te mchne at 6am (fri) today. For those who like to c him for te last time, u may cme at Blk 651b j.west st 61 #05-360.

Funeral wake is at the address above (651b Jurong West St 61 #05-360).

Those who remembered this charity drive and the boy it was for, do go if you can.
