hey there.

im looking around for scrams as i want to try dirt riding.

my friend got a wr recently but his maintenance was a bit high.

had quite a number of problems.

im thinking of getting a bike for road use and occasional track.

so far the list ive compiled is

ktm200

suzuki dr200

honda xr200

yamaha wr200

question is, which one should i get?

and should i get a new bike or a 2nd hand one?

cos old ones usually have problems popping up due to lack of care.

since wr's are supposedly easy to maintain but i've seen the high costs of maintenance myself.

basically im looking for something for transport+play.

max budget around 4.5k incl insurance and everything.

and also something easy to maintain.

new? 4.5? dont think ani suits ur budget... btw xr2 n wr2 no more in production... ktm200 at least 12.5k machine if i not wrong....

Slow nevermind.... Pattern must be nice.... Bike must be BLING...

WR2 are 10 yr old plus bikes...wear and tear are normal...tats not the maintainence cost...tats e repair cost... ur fren prob got a scrap metal...

i bought mine thru forum for 2.4k...repairs $800+ (coz i suay...CDI spoil)...now no issue...onli maintainence i do is change engine oil, spark plug and air filter as required.... i go offroad abt once/twice a week

for road use and occassional trail ktm2 is defiintely out. Its like a wildhorse for newbies to handle and fuel consumption will prob kill you

dr200 i dunno abt this bike...

so most common argument wld be xr2 or wr2.... this u gotta go ard and find out which one u want... i suggest the wr2...coz i m riding one :)

No regrets.

yeah 4.5 to 5k.

what's the fc for ktm2?

hi,tink there are already threads here dat can answer to all yr questions. times r bad now... so if u 1 style don tink of good fc.... even a dr 200 fc is not as good as a honda wave. bottom line is how much r u willing 2 pay 4 yr off road fun!

hi, i just got my xr2 and have fun with it.

it has bullet proof engine, very low maintenance cost as well, with 1 litre oil and last-you-a-year spark plug, you can't go wrong.

did a dirt ride and its power still enough for a 80kg fat guy (that's me!).

if you are new to biking, get a 4 strokes bike.

ktm is good and powerful, but it is tricky to get it properly tune. good for trail but not daily transport.

water gets into spark plug and you'll have a dead bike immediately.

see my thread 'enquiry on entry level scrambler', most of the expert answer my question there.

yeah i've read.

so now it comes down to:

xr2 or wr2.

how much did you buy urs for?

anw, im 1.7 so im not very tall.

so probably i need to tune the height.

Posted

i bought at dirt cheap price, 1.2k.

went all over the singapore and fortunate enough to secure one.

i'm 1.7m too, don't lower the bike, you'll need it when you do trail.

xr200 is ok for 1.7m guys, wr's seat is taller.

some wr is in bad shape because most new 2b riders get wr to ride for a year without proper maintenance.

must be very careful when you viewing the bike.

good luck for your hunt.

hi syazwan,

like wat sev said - get a 4 stroke bike.. either a honda(cheaper, older bike) or a suzuki dr 200 ( more $,new bike) both the engine performance is abt the same. so cost is juz the issue. also as 4 the wr is mostly use by new riders a a stepping stone bike cos is cheap. there r good wr bikes out there but they don come cheap. so be prepare a pay 4 a good condition wr. :D

okay so now wr is out, and in comes dr2.

anyone here knows how the dr2's perform now?

is it reliable and worth buying?

and sev, how's your fc like?

Posted

my friend suggested husqvarna.

anyone knows any pros/cons about it and the cost?

anw,

what's the big diff if i get an the newer(06/07?) xr125 and the older xr200?

hi,fc 4 city riding is not much diff between the 2 bikes but the honda has an advantage of having better fc for hi way use due 2 the 6th gear.

dat is abt the only important different between the 2 bikes.

as 4 the 125 or 200cc... in a 4 stroke engine every cc counts 2wards more power.

a 125 2stroke engine would make more power than the above bikes....

2 stroke = more power= poor fc

4 stroke = less power = better fc

i hope dis info makes things clearer 4 u!

cheers,dude!

yeah there are a few people who want to sell.

saw it on the forum somewhere.

fbb plate if im not mistaken.

maintenance wise, 4 stroke is easier to upkeep right?

Posted

hi syazwan!

all bikes require rugular servicing/maintenance. 0n a 4 stroke its not juz change oil n ride! u have valve clearances, timing chain 2 adjust etc 2 do. so a real servicing 4 a 4 stroke cost more than a 2 stroke but the fuel savings of a 4 stroke engine makes up 4 the cost. saw a dr 200 fw plate 4 sale at tampines. u can go check it out at the shop next week.

okay thanks bro.

im still considering between a dr2 and xr2.

but most importantly i need one that doesnt need me to change every single part once ive got it.

i think my budget of 3-4k would fit the range for these 2nd hand bikes.

hi,

''eat oil'' or drink petrol? either way dis will happen 2 any bike dat is not maintain properly. and yes 4 yr size a ktm 200 seems 2 be abt yr only option. but bear in mind dat dis is 1 of the most powerful bike in the 200cc class

but actually why nt bear with it and get somethin like kup kia or even phantom..den get 400cc scram cus maintainence will nt be as high as a 2b..plus is a 4stroke..no hassle of 2t and high petrol consumpsion...
