I don't think there is a legal way you can get a replacement side panel from the SAF's stock for their XL185s, it won't hurt to ask some buddies in there to see if they can 1206 one for you, it may not be the colour you need though.

Boon Siew would be a better bet, unless they say the part number is no longer in their system then there's......

The INTERNET (e-bay, 2nd hand sites,..) but be warned, the side panel is PLASTIC, prone to deteriorate with age.

:goodluck: , the XL185 is a trusty bike with proper care, used to ride it during my scout days, even took one to the top of Bajau.

agreed its a good bike... though quite old liaoz.. 15 years old..

but unfortunately i dun have any friends thats able to help..

i dun mind if the cover is of a different colour cos can just easily spray to the colour i want..

is there anyway that i could do a custom made or something? maybe i could give let the shop take a look of the other side of the cover where they can make a mirror image one? is there such shops that custom made?

STAR helps army to repair vehicles.. is there any possiblities where i could ask around whether i could get one?

thankz gddigger..

Old? tell me about it, I have a couple of XLs that are in their 20s. I worry about parts too.

I hope you really tried Boon Siew already, cos they are the easiest to try. Get all the details you can and compare against similiar models ie XL125 and XL200s and check for stock or availabilty.

When the XL185 is being phased out by our army, the bikes are sold off in lots (a rich source of spares....) you will need to keep a lookout in da newspapers.... try calling into STAR to see if you can get from them.

As this is a side panel, you may checkout plastics manufacturers (like UFO,..etc) to see if they have any.

DIY here is possible if you can coax the fiberglass guys to whip one up for you. I'm afraid you will need a exact part for a sample (mirror imaging may not make it as the panel covers aren't exactly "twins"...plastic pegs and mounting point may differ)..it won't be cheap....

Don't give up and learn from this...

our army phased out XL185? what are they using now then?

maybe i could drop by STAR at AYE there..

i went to boonsiew, i asked the counter for spare parts.. the person tell me dun have, its a old model.. thats all..

i called boon siew again.. she tell me old model, no more..

oh, they are clearing stocks from the army? where can i see the ads? thenewpaper or straits times?

thankz alot...

Hi .. Are you interested in selling the bike? I might be keen to buy it cos I have all the plastics in good condition but sprayed black including the tank, original meters and exhaust pipe...but just no bike to complete this....Or... i could sell you all the parts....

the XL185 may still be in use but the new bike is a Yamaha. Checkout da pics for the bike course in chatterbox under SAF and Home Team.

Okay, if you go Boon Siew, ask for the parts book for your bike, ask for a piece of paper(or help yourself), write down the p/n of the part you want and 2nd or third choice(diff colours) and ask for availability and price, don't get brushed off so easily, BTW who told you "old bike no parts"?. Imagine if you go down and get brushed off, a fone call isn't going to do better. Hope you have better luck wid STAR.

It is normal practice when equipment is considered obsolete or phased out to sell off usually for export. It may be made public(as in adverts in the papers) or thru govt websites but its in bulk form, not singular pieces. You will have to look out for the ads I'm afraid, I don't know what is the frequency for both the newspaper and internet offerings.

Seems you may have your prayers answered.....Good Luck.

I think its an '85 model, XL350 RG2G ( 2G is the designate for restricted bikes for a German riding liscence class kinda like 2b,2a here), fortunately the restriction was at the carb insulator, easily remedied. Standard is kick start only, no electric start, and its a twin carbuerator model. Its kinda rare back then too, only seven pieces were registered here, 4 RG(white tank) and 3 RH(red tank). US and Europe were the main markets.

you're a great source of information when it comes to these indeed.

how do you like riding this compare to other thumpers, say a XR250R? my guess is the XL more towards for road while the other more off road capable?

many thanks g!

Well, I've had this XL350 since 1990 and it was my only bike for many years. It was both a transport and trail bike back then. The XR250R is a much lighter bike and more fun in trail and not so comfy on the road ( you need to scream it for highway speeds and sit back on the seat). The XL350RG is heavier for trail, but I did woodcutters, gedong (all of it) and even B*JAU (the view is GREAT!). Its comfy on the road and the pillion footrests are frame mounted (my backseater appreciated it much after we rented an XLR250 wid swing arm mounted pillion pegs in phuket). The XR vibrates more too.

Both have their plus and minuses, depends basically on what is your priority and preference.

Your guess would be accurate, XRs of old with plastic tanks and beefed up suspension are pure off roads and the XLs (metal) tanks and softer suspension are More Road some off road.

Cheers,

g
