The increase in handphone-related crimes over the years is an area of concern which needs to be tackled robustly. Handphones have become primary targets for robbers, cheats and snatch thieves. One way to curb this problem is by implementing a screening system that will enable identification of stolen handphones, using each handphone's unique 15 or 17 digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. To retrieve the IMEI number of your handphone, key *#06# on your handphone keypad.

This system, the Handphone IMEI Tracing System (HITS), holds a database of IMEI numbers of handphones that have been reported stolen. It allows the members of public to verify if the handphone they intend to purchase has been reported stolen.

Just a coincidence. Logging into a registry does nothing of any sort to your phone.

I know its a bit weird of me to state this. Just over 2 months ago, I happened to found a Nokia E65 in one of the cubicle at PS. I was way off my head upon my luck but my joy went off in a split second as I suddenly recall about the police able to track the IMEI thingy... So I ignored it. But u can imagine how the devil is trying to seduce me to just grab that phone & run off with it during my one min peeing in there.

At the end of it, I finished my business & quickly left the toilet & that phone behind...

This service is more for those who buys from 2nd handphone shops which you want to check if the phone is reported stolen. If so, you could bring the mobile to any NPCC to report.

Why don't use the phone call the owner's family (Father/mother/sister/brother) and tell them the phone is with you ask the owner to meet you, for all you know, it's a very chio bu, spark will fly!

They may block the phone from being used in any mobile network which applied this rule. So called "blacklist IMEI". It's hard to enforce it globally. They still can ship phone overseas and sell.

If u report it's stolen, someone else got it and reuse. In this case, mobile operators can assist to trace. But they won't do so unless police commands.

Handphone ownership in Singapore has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Not only has this resulted in a vibrant handphone resale industry, in which handphones are bought and sold via secondhand dealers, but handphones have also become a target for thieves.
