Hi, jus101

Do you mount the pda on the bike handlebar? or put in a tank bag?

Hi victor_03, mine is a standalone GPS receiver, non-PDA type, and no, I don't mount it on handlebar but rather on my speedo meter and I use the speed reading from the GPS as a guidance for my travelling speed.

Garmin Que is a navigation software from Garmin for PPC & Palm to use with its bluetooth GPS Receiver. In order to use any garmin compatible maps for navigation purpose, u'll need this software. Since u also want voice prompt, u'll need to download its voice languages pack for Garmin Que.

Any recommendations on which GPS Bluetooth receiver to buy? I'm thinking of setting my O2 Atom as a GPS.

Personally I would recommend Holux GPSlim 236 (cost less than $200 brand new) or new Holux GPSlim 240 (not sure about $). I had friends using the GPSlim236 without any problems so far. End of day it's up to individual to decide which brand to buy.

in about 3 weeks time when Ones_co collect his new GPS, I will be helping him to load up all the maps available into his GPS - Malsings, Thailand, Europe & Australia & Canada (new). Will be using his laptop. Whoever got other maps to swap is welcome, those don't have still welcome if your GPS have enough memory.

Hi jus101,

Thanks for your recommendations. Went to Funan the other day, one of the shop recommended Holux GPSlim 236B ($229 brand new). You know of any different between Holux GPSlim 236 and Holux GPSlim 236B? Cos I went to the Holux web-site but wasn't able to find Holux GPSlim 236B. The web-site only states Holux GPSlim 236 and Holux GPSlim 240.

By the way, you know where can I buy the GPS receiver other than Funan?

Hi tt6389,

Do you have any idea whether the next meetup date will be before 26-Oct? I would love to join u guys and was hoping to grab hold of the Malaysia maps before 26-Oct (Hopefully I have already bought a GPS receiver by then). As I'll be going to Malacca on 28-Oct, hence would like to try out the GPS during that trip.

U can try East Gear @ Pennisula Plaza #02-34, they advertise $209 for brand new Holux 236B, or SLS too, ask around b4 u buy, u might b able to find a better price else where. Holux GPSlim236B (rev.C) is a revised version of Holux GPSlim236 (rev.B), not too sure about its technical differences.. :sorry:

A forumer asked me about the following. Thought it may be useful to the rest so I'm posting it here: -

Hi...sorry to bother u..u mind giving me the break down cost of ordering ur 60csx..i mean how much u pay for shipping n stuff...n how long u hav to wait for it...do they send it to your doorstep?...

I intent to order the 60cx...hey how's ur csx huh...gd or not?..

Advice appreciated..

The gpsmap 60CSx costs around US$395. This works out to be ~ S$640.

I use vPost for shipping. vPost is a freight forwarder. You request the U.S Retailer to ship the goods to vPost USA (which is located on the West Coast of U.S.A, in California). vPost USA then ships the goods to Singapore. Usually, Amazon offers free shipping within the U.S.A. So this leg of the transport is FREE.

Shipping to Singapore is around S$40 (inclusive of GST, after 15% discount - use Citibank CC).

The total cost is around S$670 - S$680.

You can specify vPost to deliver it to your house. Although that is what I do, to-date all my packages have been self-collected at Singapore Post Paya Lebar. This is the default location for uncollected packages since it is the 'home base' for Speedpost. I'm seldom at home when the postman rings. The only relief is that SingPost Paya Lebar closes at 9pm on weekdays. And its open on Sundays. So no problems here.

Do take note of the following: -

1) It'll take around 3-4 weeks for the GPS to reach your house, so this is not a method you'll want to use if you're in a hurry.

2) Also, NO WARRANTY. See if you can live with that.

3) Size of the package may vary. vPost charges by actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. If your seller decides to put your GPS unit in a huge box and stuff it with protective foam, you will end up with huge shipping charges for shipping protective foam and air.

I believe the usage / benefits of having a GPS unit has been explained in great detail by the rest of the forumers, so I shall leave you to read the posts.

An associated cost of using the 60Csx is AA batteries. You can use alkalines. Or, a set of four rechargeables and associated charger (good ones like PowerEx or Sanyo) will set you back by ~ S$50. You may want to take this into consideration.

okie, forgot to add one point.

The Garmin GPSMap series (GPSMap 60 and GPS Map 76) currently boasts the largest screen size among Garmin's range of handheld units. This is most significant differentiating factor. Other Garmin handheld units also have colour and utilises SiRF chip.

There are advantages and disadvantages of a bigger screen.

A bigger screen allows you to see more of the map. However, a bigger screen also eats up more batteries. A bigger screen is also more expensive.

To me, being able to see more of the map is a huge advantage (in Singapore at least). Roads can be very cluttered and having a zoom-ed in map (and being able to see more of it) is a good thing.

There is no reason to purchase the GPSMap 76 unless you go boating or indulge in waterborne activities. The primary difference between the GPSMap 76 and the GPSMap 60 is that the former floats, the latter doesn't.

Could I load these maps in my PC as my GPS has limited memory. Will you be posting the date of this meeting ?

Product warranty.

I don't suppose my Garmin set will break down anytime soon. Looks like a pretty sturdy set.

Shipping insurance can be arranged.
