Just an update on MFM.

MFM is now known as MyAsean Free Map because MFM maps cover more than just Malaysia, and Singapore.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/udaloy/captured-4.jpg

With an agreement with Navigasi map, we can now download street level map of Indonesia, all the islands included, directly from MFM site.

http://www.malfreemaps.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=4583

On the latest MFM-Garmin 090921, the map includes Southern Thailand.

Helping my friend to sell off his Garmin Street Pilot 2720, he bought it few months ago but hardly used it once or twice only.. how he got the Nuvi.

Anyone interested in GPS for their bike and car... 2 in 1... and its much cheaper then the Zumo500 or 276c. Item is waterproof as mentioned in Garmin website. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=6387

Specks : Waterproof, 2GB internal memory, Voice prompt, 2D & 3D maps view, Touch screen

Bad Point: Operates with power supply only

Price is S$350 (negotiable). I'll say its a good buy. It comes together with latest Singapore Malaysia map. And this offer is inclusive of latest Thailand map v8.1 too.

Items in the box are pictured below

Hi guys,

I went down to Sim Lim to get a GPS for my bike and I found out the models suitable for bikes (waterproof) are way more expensive than the car ones. My budget is limited and anyway I'm not planning a big trip or anything my use will be around Singapore only... My question is, have anyone bought a basic non waterproof model (around 200$) and then custom made a case or a soft plastic sealed cover to avoid the water getting to the device in case of rain? Do you think that would work??

Would love to hear your advice on this...

Thanks,

Gato

Of course it will work.

Before my Nuvi550, I was using my Nuvi200W on my bike for malaysia, and whenever it rained, I just cover it with a ziplock bag. There are a few protection tips to reduce it's vulnerability to the elements such as taping up the SD card slot, position the GPS behind the headcowl..etc

You can get a used Nuvi 205 or 205w for less than SGD200, those are really value for money.

Hey Demon,

Thanks a lot for the tips!

Thats what I'm going to do, get a used or new basic "car" gps model and cover it with a ziplock bag.

Yesterday I saw at Sim Lim a Garmin basic model at 199$ and Shinco at 230$... Any model around 200$ I should consider??

If anyone selling please feel free to pm

not very knowledgeable about gps... but I have come across an article which suggest that not just waterproofing is important... can you still read the display under the sun glare.... can you press the buttons with the gloves on.....etc...

My advice is stick to Garmin for free and regular online map support.

Valued for money models will be Nuvi 205, or 205W (W for Wide screen). Not advisable to get the older models like the "3" series or even the Nuvi200.

Lookout for them here (Not all sellers are in Singapore) :

For someone who is hopeless with directions and maps, I am keen to get a GPS. :)

Basically, I am looking for a basic GPS which tell me how lost am I currently, and how to get from A-B.

I've seen some basic handheld like the the GArmin GPS60.

cf-md.jpg

Is this enough for my requirements? Or should I opt for like the GArmin 205 since the price is about the same?

cf-lg.jpg

I got some questions though. Please advise.

1) Where do you guys mount the GPS? Need to buy a dedicated mount? Do note i am keen on the Garmin Nuvi 205 at the moment. :)

2) For the GPS, many are using lithium ion battery, which means if it is gone, it is gone. Are there any ways to charge it on the go? Have to DIY?

3) I wonder for car models, if mount on the bike, will the vibrations basically kill the GPS fast?

4) Seen the Garmin nuvi 205, seems a real value of money stuff. Anyone using now?

5) I suppose usage of GPS is free, and I can just downlaod free maps over sites like malfreemaps.com easily?

Please advise.

Thanks! :)

The GPS60 is an entry model of the GPS series which is very basic. It comes with only 24Mb of internal memory which is too small for street level map of Singapore & Malaysia. I'm not even sure if you can buy them new here.

The current model is the GPS60CSx which is more expensive than the Nuvi205.

The GPS is the pic is the Nuvi 550 and not Nuvi 205

1) Where do you guys mount the GPS? Need to buy a dedicated mount? Do note i am keen on the Garmin Nuvi 205 at the moment. :)

You can DIY or pay to get the Ram Mount. Ram Mount may be more expensive but it's worth it's every cent.

2) For the GPS, many are using lithium ion battery, which means if it is gone, it is gone. Are there any ways to charge it on the go? Have to DIY?

The charger is a standard accessory that comes every the Nuvi. Since all of them are using the USB mode of charging, it's really convenient. You can use AC or DC to charge your GPS.

Lithium batteries can last about 1000 charge cycle, but the battery endurance does reduces over time.

The Battery is not replaceable in the Nuvi series except for the Nuvi550/500. There are some DIY instructions on how to replace the battery in the GPS Forums.

3) I wonder for car models, if mount on the bike, will the vibrations basically kill the GPS fast?

Don't worry about vibrations, the Garmin GPS is really rugged.

4) Seen the Garmin nuvi 205, seems a real value of money stuff. Anyone using now?

Although the Nuvi205 is not discontinued but it has been replaced with a new model. There are definitely many Nuvi 205 around judging from the classified ads in the GPS Forums

5) I suppose usage of GPS is free, and I can just downlaod free maps over sites like malfreemaps.com easily?

Yes, all free, but only in MalFreeMaps.com which is truly free and no strings attached.

Hi bro,

thanks for your detailed reply. Appreciate that.

For the Ram Mount, is it compatible with the Nuvi205?

Cos I am most likely going to get this model since it is the most affordable.

I asked a salesman about this 205, and he said the battery last 2-3 hours only.

So, I guess i got to plug it into my bike's battery? Is it a simple DIY job to fit in a power socket for the 205?

Lastly, the Ram Mount, where can I get it in Sg? Saw the price online, about $50 I guess.

Thanks!

There is a ram mount, designed specifically for Nuvi205

I asked a salesman about this 205, and he said the battery last 203 hours only.

The Nuvi screen is not really sunlight readable. In a car, it's not so bad but on a motorbike, it can be quite bad. One way to improve it is to turn up the backlight to the max, and that would drain the battery really quickly.

The garmin comes with a standard power plug, so the easiest way to power the GPS is to rig a power socket on your bike. Just tap it directly to the battery, and put a 10A fuse on the positive wire near the battery lead.

Lastly, the Ram Mount, where can I get it in Sg? Saw the price online, about $50 I guess.

It should be around that price, since it's USD31.88 on Amazon.

this was what i used to do (was using a car gps running on mapking) but gave up due to the hassle, got myself a waterproof Nuvi 550 and enjoying it ever since :thumb:

quite true, i encountered that problem when using my nuvi 550 under sunlight. but there's a "workaround", don't need to max brilliance.

at around 40~50% brilliance, try tilting the face at an angle (usually downwards) such that the screen doesn't face you directly and you sould be able to read reasonably well.

in any case, i'm lucky that my ride came with a cigarette type power socket that i could power the GPS unit on the go :p

hi peeps

i'm looking for the coordinates to Lapis and Gerisk hot springs in johor. anyone been there and has a fix on them?

1) Lapis Hot Spring (Segamat)

To get here, head for Yong Peng town or Segamat town. From Yong Peng, travel north along the trunk road to Labis. From Segamat, travel southeast to Labis town. It is a further 10km from Labis to reach the hot spring

http://www.virtualmalaysia.com/desti...%20spring.html

2) Sungei Grisek Hot Spring (Muar)

The nearest town is Batu Pahat (23km). From the North South Expressway (NSE), take the Ayer Hitam exit (Interchange 244) onto highway 50 that will lead you to Batu Pahat. From Batu Pahat town, travel north-west passing Semerah. At Sungai Balang, take a right turn and drive on for about 4km and you will reach the Grisek Hotspring.
